In Skyship Academy: The Pearl Wars, we learned that Jesse and Cassius both are Drifters or simply put aliens from out of Earth.
Jesse and Cassiu's parents had lived on until their planet became unstable so they had to send their people off their planet , although The Authority who is composed of people who are coming from Haven Jesse Fisher and Cassius Stevenson's home planet who happen to be Shifters and are capable of manipulating a rare element called Ridium are trying to bring down the opposition of Green Pearl Drifters who are really part of the Rebellion of Haven.
Ridium is a special pure black substance that

has, The Authority are Haven's royalty including the branch of all Shifters but are now enemies to Jesse and Cassius as well as all Drifters since Jesses and Cassiu's parents are members of the rebellion against the monarchy full of Shifters.
You see part of the reason, Haven had become unstable was because of the shifters manipulating Ridium in the first place which made Haven very much unhospitable environmentallywise.
Adaylla and Savon Founders of Haven's resistance had rebelled against the wishes of The Authority when they didn't want to cooperate in conquering Earth as their planet collapsed.
Finally, we learn that Jesse is the Pearl Breaker while Cassius is the one who harnesses the recess energy from Jesse's pearl breaking into fire power.
They are Earth's hope to truly stop The Authority from invading Earth, In Crimson Rising, Jesse searches for a way to build an army of Green Pearl Drifters before The Authority reaches Earth although stopping events from unfolding can go both ways.
Jesse encouters a Red Pearl for the first time that seems to be a member of the dangerous Authority, Jesse is distracted though occasionally since Avery the girl he really likes had previously been captured, With Avery's return they meet Theo who quickly becomes one of the most dangerous enemies of the brothers, Theo really shows us the dangerous but amazing powers of a Shifter who can control Ridium, Jesse in the end must suffer losses even as he must remain strong for the war that inevitably looms between the Green Pearls Breakers Drifters and Red Pearl Drifters.

Nick Jame's Skyship Academy: Crimson Rising was very entertaining, To be honest here and now while did get immersed in Skyship Academy: The Pearl Wars was much slower reading in pace or ocassionally loss any alarming quality that would keep you at the edge of your seat while you took it in.
Now with Crimson Rising the potential that actually knew existed from The Pearl Wars exceeded in expectations in Crimson Rising, Got umbelievably far better. The action, a huge wow, increased to a kickstart by several degrees, A lot of things are moving into the grandeur scheme of the stalemate between Green Pearl Drifters and Red Pearl Drifters which is rather good.
The action and adventure also increased to any readers who had previously enjoyed Skyship Academy: The Pearl Wars which did, by the way, Given to you the reader as short and sweet: Awesome Science Fiction reading!
Overall: Amazing read!
Genre: Science Fiction, Dystopian, Steampunk, Young Adult I really liked this book.
However, the cover didn't really advertise it was the second book in a series and, although it was possible to pick up the backstory along the way, I think it would have been helpful to have read Bookfirst.

I also found the style curious, The chapters from Fisher's pointofview are told in first person and the chapters from Cassius' perspective are told in third person, It doesn't matter that much, except in the early chapters, where it's extremely odd to go from Chapterin Cassius' viewpoint to Chapterin Fisher's.
I was befuddled, bemused and becalmed for a while at the beginning of the second chapter,

Spoilers follow:

Cassius and Fisher are brothers, They are also not human, Fisher is a breaker of pearls: pearls being the power source for much of earth's broken and post climate change cities, Except pearls aren't things they are cocooned people, Alien people, admittedly. While they are imprisoned, they are a power source, If they are freed well, they're supposed to form an army, Not to invade earth but to stop an invasion, By Matiga, the ruthless ruler who has despoiled their home planet and has now discovered another world to rule: earth,

Cassius and Fisher discover they have been sent to earth to prevent Matiga from even gaining the slightest toehold, But their choices go awry at every turn and ultimately, they don't know enough to avoid becoming responsible for the invasion they were meant to avert.

Nick James creates a dimensional future with an amazing world building, This book was far more exciting than the first, It was action packed, with amazing developed characters and flawless timing, Theo was so wicked, I hated him, I want the next book of the series right now, For more reviews, go sitelinkwww, readinista. com.

Before I start, I should preface this review with if you havent read the first book in the Skyship Academy series, The Pearl Wars, then you shouldnt read this review until you do.
Its for your own good, Feel free check out my review of The Pearl Wars if you are wondering what the first book is like, To those who did read The Pearl Wars and its been awhile, I recommend rereading parts of the book to help bring you up to speed.
The author does reminisce for too long on the first book, which I personally like, but isnt helpful if you are a little foggy on the details.
A quick reread of certain parts should remedy this,

Author Nick James delivers a fantastic sequel to The Pearl Wars, Crimson Rising is action packed, intriguing, and impossible to put down, In Crimson Rising, everything goes wrong for Cassius Stevenson and Jesse Fisher, After a discovery in Seattle that changes everything about who they are and what they know, they are now on a mission to save the other drifters.
However, their mission is put on hold when they become prisoners in their own homes, Jesse doesnt let the strict rules and watchful eye stop him from his mission, he finds a way to defy orders and get past the guards.
Its not long before he makes another incredible discovery that will change everything again,

I would venture to say that Crimson Rising is better than The Pearl Wars, and I dont normally say that about sequels, Crimson Rising felt a little more mature and more like it was for an older audience, The main characters have grown up as well and they end up in a lot tough situations, Jesse and Cassius are separated for most of the book too so they are each going through their own issues, They have to be strong and keep their determination in order to survive,

Just like with the first book, Nick James keeps you guessing and wondering whats going to happen next, James has a knack for creating unique stories that are so new and different that its impossible to know what to expect, Right when you think its going to go one direction it all changes, Crimson Rising is a well crafted story thats also refreshingly different, I cant wait for the next The moment I picked up this book, I couldn't stop, It was so exciting, dynamic, and full of action, I liked how Jesse gained some backbone in this one compared to the first book, The plot thickens with the rise of a new enemy and I'm so excited for the third one! I like the characters more in this one, but Cassius doesn't seem to have much about him compared with Jesse.
And I'm not sure if it's because I read the first one a while ago, but there seemed a little connection as to how Jesse gained backbone.
Also, I feel like Jesse grew more special compared to Cassius, since in the first one, Cassius was the special one, I just though there's unbalance, especially that they're brothers it was unfair, Overall, if you like a good action, wellthough out world with scifi mixed into it all, this is a wonderful book to read, Our bestselling scifi series continues

Following their dramatic showdown in Seattle, Jesse Fisher and Cassius Stevenson find their worlds been turned inside out.
The faculty at Skyship Academy is keeping Jesse a prisoner in his own home, fearful of his influence over Pearls, And Cassius, once a loyal Pearlhound for the Unified Party, has been pushed into hiding, fearful of his government's retaliation,

When Jesse smuggles a mysterious red Pearl onboard the Academy, he sets loose a destructive chain of events, which lead him to a reunion with Cassius and a confrontation with Theo a bloodthirsty Pearlhound with a dangerous secret.

But a larger threat looms in the, An enemy is gathering, with plans to exterminate the entire human race, And Jesse and Cassius might just be the lynch pins that trigger mankind's destruction, Perhaps its been too long since I read the first in the series, It took me a while to remember what was happening amp who all the characters were, The book is certainly actionpacked, but events seemed to become less believable as the book progressed, I know its scifi, but when Jesse and Cassius were suddenly floating in a huge memory cube that seemed to appear out of nowhere, . . thats when I nearly put the book down without finishing, I probably wont finish the series,

I still dont like the change in perspective and time, Jesses part is first person present tense and Cassiuss is third person past tense, Im ok with changing POV, but changing tense is annoying to me, This is Book Two in a several book saga titled Skyship Academy, and I am here to tell you that I would have been well served to read Book One first!

I know.
. . duhhh!!

This sci fi young adult saga takes place a hundred or so years into the future, At this time planet Earth has been devastated by war and the onset of global warming, Warring factions of the survivors have separated into three camps: those who live in Chosen Cities, which are domed and climate controlled those Separatists who live in huge airships far above the Earth's surface and third, those unfortunate folks who dwell in The Fringes, still on Earth, but in decaying cities in intense heat.

The author does make many references to events that occur in the first book, but trust me, all does not become clear as a result! Part of the reason is that so many layers of plot have been built in the previous book that retelling that would have seemed like way too much redundancy to the better informed reader.

This is certainly not just a rehash of the first book, The Pearl Wars, and in fact author Nick James uses so many plot twists and turns that it takes real concentration to keep up, if like me, the reader has stepped in in the middle of the story.
Jesse and Cassius meet in the first book and come to find out they share a common heritage and should be fighting on the same side.
In Book Two, Crimson Rising, they are separated but still communicating, They have found out that their origin is on another planet in another solar system, Sent to Earth as children they have just learned what had been expected of them, and they are lagging far behind in building the army they are expected to have waiting when their parents and other allies arrive from the dying planet Haven.
The green pearls that have been falling to earth and have been hoarded as powerful energy sources by both the domed cities and the skyships, are actually containers for individual travelers from their home planet.
Jesse is gifted with the ability to open the pearls and set them free, but first he has to find them, The green pearls seem to gravitate toward him and he seems to have an ESPtype ability to communicate with the individuals inside, But now red pearls are appearing and Jesse is burned when he tries to touch one,

I can't believe Nick outdid himself with this sequel!

Wow,

Y'all need to get this series out there, Nick James is an underrated YA writer!

The Story:

My Notes:

, I was wondering what Nick has up his sleeve for Book, After reading it, I guess he pulled out all the stops! The plot thickened in this awesome sequel, weaving plenty of intricacies and making it more sophisticated, without being too overwhelming for the reader.
I tell ya, this author's plotting skills is just shamazing,

. The writing was great as usual, and I found the scene transitions seamless, There were plenty of details without being too descriptive, and I appreciated that!

, Greater character depth and development in this one, though I would have liked the author to explore the relationship between the brothers, I felt there wasn't much "family/sibling time" where they kind of have a hearttoheart talk,

. Loads more action here! Really, exciting and vivid, I was like watching a movie playing in my head,

Verdict:

The sequel did not disappoint at all, and I'm so pumped for the finale, Can't wait to get my hands on the last book of this trilogy if it's a trilogy, that is! I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book.
It was Ok, nothing horrible, It just felt like the same thing as the first book, Yes there's a different storyline now with a new "enemy, " But overall, it felt like the same book over again, I'll read the next one, and see if things change, Not a bad read fast, and lightly entertaining, .
