Download And Enjoy The Voice Of The Dolls Composed By Dorothy Eden File Format Document
keeps me reading! She is a great storyteller, A good old fashioned English mystery with a sweet love twist at the end, I know it was written in, but a good story is always a good story, Entertaining mystery that will keep you guessing fairly close to the end,/if I could I liked this book and its mystery, She has a different style of writing, but enjoyable Good story, full of mysterious happenings with a twist at the end, Although written inand a little old fashioned I still enjoyed it,Good suspense with lots of Gothic name droppingJane Eyre, Rebecca, etc, but predictable. Not my favorite by Eden but entertaining, To be honest I wanted to read Dorothy Eden because I love the cover art so hard, but actually this was just as I hoped it would be.
A little bit Gothic, some romance, a mystery and a general feeling of genteel Englishness of yore, Unfortunately no actual talking dolls, so maybe being a bit generous with thestars, . In the voice of the dolls we meet tall, young and pretty Sarah Stacey who, undecided about her future after her father's death, takes a temporary job as a governess to sad little Jennie Foster.
Since her mother's accidental death, Jennie has been withdrawn she plays only with her dolls, "communicating" with them in a macabre game that resembles reality in the secretive Foster household all too accurately.
I wonderful mystery! I read the book in a day and was guessing until the very end, mysteries just aren't written the same anymore, I found it very hard to care about the characters in this book, save for poor little Jennie,
Eliot could have been interesting if he had been fleshed out beyond Tragic Figure,
Most of the characters attitudes towards sadness and sickness were deplorable,
As if one should change ones moods to suit everyone else, as if anyone COULD do that,
Oliver was an obnoxious ass from the getgo and I failed to see why Sarah was fawning over him like an idiot.
Tim and Sarah's romance lacked chemistry,
It got to the point where I wished the mystery would be solved already so I could be done with it.
About the mystery itself, there was a bit I hadn't guessed, so kudos for surprising me,
The setup was perfect except it was missing the requisite old spooky house but this one fell flat for me.
I'm giving Dorothy Eden another try, I have only liked one of her novels so far, so we'll see, . .
Ok, I didpages, and ick, I don't like this one either, Annoying characters, kind of inane premise to me anyway, and predictable storyline, As per my usual rule about not reading stuff that I don't enjoy, I'm quitting this one, Life is too short, and I think this is my last Dorothy Eden novel with only one hit out of several misses.
Rather underwhelming but this is a very early Edenreissued in the 's, so I'll assume it's not her best amp try another one later.
Like Mary Stewart's Wildfire at Midnight also an early work, this book is more of a traditional mystery novel, amp thus it contains tropes that I dislike.
The characters are flat. The big reveal is infodump'd by the bad guy and, later, the hero, The mystery is a traditional "one of this family, . . is a murderer!" sort of deal, The dolls of the title are barely involved in the story, amp their creep factor was diminished to the point where they were nothing but a plotmovement device.
The heroine was dumb alas, poor namesake amp contributed nothing to fitting the clues together, though she did manage to jump to conclusions amp be surprised by the blithe, blustering villainindisguise.
. . after already deciding he must be involved, facepalm Finally, all the major twists were predictable amp said villain was exactly whom I'd suspected from page,
Nope. Not great. Notable exception: the chapter where Sarah was stuck playing nursemaid to a comatose victim, That scene was good.
IMO, Voice of the Dolls has been incorrectly lumped into the genre that Eden most commonly wrote, Romantic suspense, maybe but all romantic suspense is NOT gothic, Autolabeling romantic suspense as gothic is like saying all dystopian novels are postapocalyptic, It just ain't true, y'all,
See, these subcategories are important to obsessive shelvers like yours truly, Don't judge. :P
.stars, rounded up. I'm feeling kind. The book I have is actually a combination of The Voice of the Dolls publishedand Listen to Danger published, I inherited it in my mother's library and just now have gotten around to reading it, Both of these stories are gothic novels with a touch of the cozy mystery
vibe in them, Dorothy Eden was very good at creating lively, likeable characters that carry off her plots of murder and mayhem without a lot of gory, graphic details.
The Voice of the Dolls is set in London, where a young woman named Sarah Stacey is hired as governess to look after Jennie Foster, a troubled eightyearold who lives with her severely dysfunctional family.
Sarah quickly finds something is terribly off with her new employer, Oliver Foster, After a suicide and a suspicious accident, Sarah doesn't know who to trust and turns to a mysterious uncle for help, Will Tim be her savior, or is he the one behind all the mayhem In Listen to Danger, a young widow, Harriet Lacey, is left to support herself and raise her two children, but when the children are kidnapped, she turns to the unlikeliest of heroes, her neighbor Flynn, a blind man who may or may not have been the cause of her late husband's demise.
I liked this story the most, I found the plot intricate but believable, and the characters endearing, An enjoyable book. I like the old fashioned style of writing, Dorothy Eden created a set of very sharply drawn characters, The vulnerable wife, the stoic governess, a stilted child, the binge eating mother in law together with the hero and the charismatic psychopath.
My main objection is that the book is too short and events happen too quickly,
Sarah Stacey lands the position and immediately a death occurs, Build up would have added to the suspense,
I found Venetia to be the most interesting female with her frailties, I admit to being rather envious of her blue satin sheets and diamond earrings,
If you are looking for a politically incorrect gothic romance, I recommend this book, .
