on Seeking Unseen (Toch Island Chronicles, #2)

Seeking Unseen, we return to Toch Island, and the magical goingson surrounding Angel and her friends and family, First, there's the new boy on the block, Ayden, who's been blessed with the talent to change his talentalthough he's finding that this is getting harder and more dangerous to do.
Then, there's the former thief, Doran Ashe, newly released from jail, who seems bent on stealing books from Sir Benjamin,

Adventures ensue when Angel "Gates" back to where her fosterfamily used to live, and runs into an old acquaintance, Melinda, who is having a miserable life, Melinda has gone goth, and is working up a fine effort at rebellionif only her mother was paying attention! But she isn't Melinda helps Angel find a way to contact Zack, but at a price.
When she learns that Angel is there to rescue Zack and take him home with her, Melinda insists on coming too,

Melinda's rebellion threatens to pull everyone around her into deadly danger, How will they escape Who is Doran Ashe anyway, and why does Angel keep seeing Gregor sneaking around her yard, when he's supposed to be dead Who took the books Sir Benjamin had so carefully hidden For answers to these questions, and more, you'll have to read the book!

This book was very well edited and an easy, enjoyable read.
I got hooked and stayed up far later than I should have to finish reading it! I give Seeking Unseen five for unexpected plot twists, excitement, danger, and memorable characters.
Two years has passed since the events of Finding Angel, and Angel really really wants to know what became of her younger fosterbrother, She's given some disquieting magical visions of him, and sets off to rescue him along with her new boyfriend Ayden,

But Angel winds up accidentally bringing back not only her fosterbrother, but her annoying friend Melinda, Melinda is the rebellious punkgoth type, and she instantly takes over the story, Her viewpoint of the hidden magical town, devoid of electricity and technology, as well as her flirting with the excon Doran and his dubious experiments, makes this book really pop.

And yes, there's glowing butterflies,

A few things felt choppy about the beginning of the book, as if we were rushing through character development to get to the good stuff, but I'm working off an ARC and things might be polished up a little more in the final version.

Melinda is one of those infuriating yet sympathetic characters, because if she wasn't running around breaking rules, not much plot would happen, The beetle Horatio has a bigger role this time, and there's lots of callbacks to characters who died in Finding Angel, You might want to read that first, because an entire portion of the plot follows on from book, But Seeking stands on its own, too, Just be aware that it's going to spoil all the surprises from Finding Angel,

All told, the author's storytelling skills have massively improved between the first book and the second, If the third one is even better than Seeking, then we're looking at some eventual bestsellers, Angel is reunited with her family, but prefers to be called Angel rather than the name her parents gave her, She practices her new found Talent and other magic that the island gives, She loves her island home but misses Gregor and Zach, She missed Zach so much, Angel used her FIND talent to see him, but he was not in the home she had left behind, And he obviously wasnt happy,
Then new kids arrive in town, Sarah has a job at the University and her son Ayden has a secret of his own, Doran Ashe is in town, but who is he really
I really enjoyed Finding Angel and Seeking Unseen was no disappointment, The flora and fauna and creatures have a magical life all their own, As each person discovers their Talentnew and unique to themthey learn more about the world around them, Trees with metallic qualities, music that can feel like a rollercoaster ride, and dragons, There were plot twists that left me gasping,
A YA novel with a positive message and morals, I highly recommend. It truly is different than other books out there,
Seeking Unseen is the sequel to Finding Angel and it occursyears after the first book, In Finding Angel, Angel discovers her magical heritage, Seeking Unseen, begins with Angel deciding to use the wish that she has through a wood chip in her bracelet, Her wish involves rescuing Zack, her little brother, from his aunt and uncle who are making his life miserable, But when she brings Zack back to Toch Island she also brings Melinda, her old friend,
Seeking Unseen continues the story for many of the characters from Finding Angel, but it also brings some new characters, I loved the characters in Finding Angel and I was happy to see them growing in this story, I liked that Kalek had a much larger role in this story, And I loved Horatio, the little beetle, and how involved he was in this story, I also thought that the new characters that Ms, Heckenbach introduced in this story were wonderful, Melinda is a perfect contrast to Angel, Melinda is moody and rebellious, she has a hard time feeling like she belongs, and she learns a lot about her father and herself, Zack is such a fun character, His exuberance and love of every fantasy thing that he discovers is heartwarming, Ayden is such a sweetie and the perfect match for Angel, He's supportive and caring and cute,
The descriptions that Ms, Heckenbach writes are so vivid, especially the descriptions of the fantasy creatures and the natural environment of Toch Island, As you are reading, it is easy to picture the scene in your mind,
This story is a fantasy story but it also has a mystery and suspense element, The plot flows smoothly and there were a few twists and turns along the way,
I think that YA fantasy lovers will really enjoy this story, although I do recommend that you read Finding Angel first so that you know the backstory and fully understand what is going on in this book.

“Seeking Unseen” is the second book in Kat Heckenbachs Toch Island Chronicles series, Having not read “Finding Angel,” the first book in the series, I wish I would have started there, Kats a solid writer, and it shows in this book, The story is eminently readable, easy to follow, and her characters are rich and witty!, Perhaps the thing I liked best was the storyworld Kats created, Toch Island is a magical world that exists alongside our own it has its own unique brand of magic, communal rules, flora and fauna, Some elements of this fantasy world are really quite original, And therein lies a bit of my problem, not with “Seeking Unseen,” but in starting with Book Two, I felt like I was behind the curve for the first half of the novel, What were the rules of this world Where or in what age does this world exist Then there were references to events in “Finding Angel,” and characters that died.
It needlessly made the story a little more work than it should have been, All in all, however, this is a solid YA novel, full of great concepts, and very wellwritten, And a great moral framework unlike like so much of the glum, angsty YA fantasy that seems to permeate the market, Heres hoping this series eventually finds its way to a broader readership, Four out of five for Kat Heckenbachs “Seeking Unseen, ”./
Thoughts as I'm currently a third of the way through: I hate Ayden, I hope Doran turns out to be a good guy and Ayden turns out to be the bad guy,

Stayed up tillam last night/this morning to finish this, It put a shackle on my eyes so I couldn't look away from the book until I had read the first few pages of Legacy Rewound the next book.

I absolutely love Melinda's character and her growth throughout this book, so messed up and real,
I still hate Ayden, Angel's parents seem a little too perfect, which is mostly fine considering that fact is part of Melinda's story, and Angels parents aren't really major characters,
Since I didn't get much sleep, I'm drawing a blank on how to finish this review, Maybe I'll finish it later, For now, I'll just say this again: I love Melinda's character in this, Seeking Unseen is even more wonderful, unique and unpredictable than Finding Angel, the book

that preceded it, Ms Heckenbach is a highly skilled and creative author who writes stories that are perfect for younger teens since they are free of the heavy violence that infects so much of our fiction.

She adds some new characters and weaves a story with the same mix of magic and mystery as in Finding Angel, but with more complex character interactions.
When Angel returns to her old town to find her little foster brother, Zack, she meets Melinda, a childhood friend, and daughter of Dawic, the evil mastermind of Finding Angel.
Melinda pleads with Angel to take her back to the magical island with her, and Angel, sweet girl that she is, relents and takes her with them, However, Melinda is a complex character with a tendency towards negativity, so Angel and her mother and father have their hands full trying to assimilate her into the family and life in a magical world.

The drama revolves around, Doran, a boy thief who has been released from prison after four years, He behaves strangely, and Angel's parents, and the elven boy Kalek, don't trust him, Distrust, however, breeds more distrust, and when Melinda takes a shine to Doran, she feels she has to hide it from the others, I can't say too much about the story without giving away too much, just believe me when I say, that it's a good one, and with an unexpected ending in more ways than one.

Apart from the wellcrafted nature of the book, I liked that Angel's parents were good parents, So often we see absent or poor parenting in YA books, so it was refreshing to see something more healthy and probably more realistic for a lot of kids.
I also liked the way Angel handled Melinda, with intelligence and sensitivity, Also the nature of Melinda's Talent, when it was revealed, was perfect, providing the master stroke for the superb character development that gave the story depth and meaning,

This is an excellent fantasy for teens, one with a positive theme, the transformative power that can come from truly caring for someone,

I recieeved this book free from the author in return for an honest review, No guarantee of a positive review was made,
