on Going In Seine: An Apartment in Paris? A Crazy Idea!

a lover of the wonderful City of Light, better known by its usual name of Paris, I bought this book on a whim to see if the author shared my passion

and also to see if she had anything new to say about the city.
I read a great deal of it on a Eurostar journey on the way to Paris and got thoroughly hooked, The book is an account of how the author just "happened" to buy a tiny apartment in Paris and the fun / traumas she had trying to bring it up to some level of habitability.
Along the way she discovered a lot about the French, their language and their way of life and in particular how they differ from the British, She started as a rusty linguist and by the end was able to handle their infamous bureaucracy,

The joy of the book for me was the way she took the reader to so many parts of Paris familiar to me the thrill of recognition!and also to parts I haven't yet encountered, such as the Jardin de l'Atlantique which is, would you believe, a fullscale park on the roof of a railway station.
I also learned a lot about the writer's weak bladder and the toilets of Paris I must visit the toilets at the side of the Madeleine someday to see if they really do live up to their reputation, as Polly Fielding claims, as being among the most beautiful public loos in the world.

The book has many passages of surreal humour and we experience alongside the author all the excitements, anticipations and frustrations in her quest to turn the shell of a flat into a minipalace.
Many of the characters she introduces us to the plumber and electrician, the meddling Frenchman who even manages to alienate other Frenchmen, Polly's husband who seems out of his depth in Paris come to life vividly.
And the final page, where the title becomes more than just a play on words, makes a lovely ending,

Whether you're interested in buying a property in Paris, love the city as I do or just want an enjoyable and amusing read, I recommend this book as an enjoyably engrossing read.
Polly Fielding didnt know what she was letting herself in for when, on the spur of the moment, she decided to blow her savings on a small apartment in Paris.
She had seen it as an exciting adventure until, having paid the deposit, she came face to face with the reality of her actions, The true story of how she used and developed her rudimentary grasp of French to cope with a situation rapidly slipping out of her control, and dealt with the famous or infamous French bureaucracy, makes an absorbing and entertaining read.
We are introduced to a randy Italian plumber, a drunken French electrician, the Frenchman from Hell, Pollys alltooEnglish husband and their wayward daughter, not to mention the best and worst of Parisian toilets.

Even if you think you know Paris you will enjoy an alternative view of this amazing city, whilst anyone who hasnt yet seen it will find themselves rushing to buy Eurostar tickets.
The writers deep affection for everything French and her bewilderment at the variety of ways in which the French differ from their British neighbours are very evident, Meanwhile, at the centre of everything is the tiny apartment that Polly turns from a semiderelict shell to the place of her dreams, And as for the title, read on to find out why its more than just a corny pun,
