Acquire Today Actual Factual: Dracula, A Compendium Of Vampires Composed By Theresa Bane Supplied As Audiobook
creatures from around the world are always interesting, and this book is a pretty comprehensive reference of strange vampires and vampirerelated things.
This encyclopedia would actually be a three or four star book, but it is marred by some bad writing.
For example, there is a lot of little essays by the author before we get to the compendium section.
In these essays, Bane says things like: "Finding these corpses was also not proof of a vampires presence, only of mans primitive desire to define his fear".
Well duh! I don't think anyone needs to spell out the fact that finding a dead body doesn't prove vampires exist.
We then get an essay about how Dracula and Vlad Tepes are different, Again, this is just common sense stuff since one was a real person and one is a fictional character.
What is worse, the compendium entries themselves have some problems, For example, under the "Adze" entry, we read that the Adze is a vampire from Africa, Then IN THE VERY NEXT ENTRY, we read under "African Vampiric Witch": "There are no vampires in Africa, There are witches who perform acts of vampirism", It goes without saying that, later in the book, we get more examples of African vampires,
Finally, each entry has a bunch of information, such as the type of prey the vampire prefers, how to get rid of the vampire, etc.
The problem is that some of the entries are missing some of these various bits of information, If it unknown, then I would rather have had the author write "unknown" rather than just leaving it out and making me wonder if it is truly unknown, a printing error, or just laziness.
So, overall, this is an interesting look at vampires from around the world that is marred by some questionable inclusions and contradictions.
This is the first definitive catalogue of vampires that has been compiled in the pastyears, Before Bram Stoker's Dracula, before Vlad the Impaler, the world lived in mortal fear of the undead rising from their graves to feed upon the living.
In this book, vampirologist Theresa Bane reveals the actual, factual truth about these creatures from history, myth, and legend.
