is the first book of a dark and gory series,
I must be honest, at first it was difficult to follow the story, but after a couple of chapters, everything falls in place and the plot pickups at a steady pace.
With some unique characters, a rich and detailed language, very graphic and violent scenes and great family values, The Sciell it's an original book that grabbed my attention and left me wanting to read more!! Can't wait for book.

Johnson, in her debut, offers the first installment of a new horrorfantasy series.
Shade Harrellite is halfhuman and halfDelPraeli, a species of shapeshifting, nocturnal supernatural predators, As such, she can use powers linked to the Energy of Lifeblood and the Bria of the Darkness.
Chafing under the pressures of living under the rules of both human and DelPraeli societies, Shade rebels in small but harmless ways.
But when her journey leads her through a mysterious magical protection shield to Raesul, a village inhabited by nonhumans, she begins to learn the truth about herself, the DelPraeli and the Darkness to which theyre all connected.
She also starts to learn the secret of the nonhuman race, the Sciell, whose members each hold two consciousnesses, and about her own role in the destiny of her world.
The tale follows the familiar formula of the comingofage tale as it reveals its secrets, but it does so with a welcome sense of enthusiasm.
Johnsons style is unpolished but somewhat reminiscent of authors Tanith Lee and Anne Rice, The pacing is slow, mostly because this is the first book in a series, intended to set up the characters, conflict and world.
As a result, theres less action in this volume than dialogue, but this is not a fatal flaw.
The worldbuilding is competent with touches of George R, R. Martins A Song of Ice and Fire series in its character and place names, It also draws on popular monsterfantasy tropes similar to those seen in the works of Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris and others.
However, it includes more modern terminology and ideas than other books of its type, which makes its setting a bit more distinctive.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review,
I found this story to be a little complicated to read, I think the story has a good plot, I would like to read the second book to see if it is any better,
Shade is a half breed part DelPraeli part something else and always hated for it, She chooses to live among humans to hide from some of the hatred and pain, When her friend and adopted brother Vayle comes to take her back to face punishment at Iniquitys Court Shade has to face the people who hate her most.
When the DelPraeli starts to change and the truth starts to unravel it might be a half breed that survives against the odds.
Shade is and unusual character she is constantly put down and expects to be treated with nothing but hate.
She has to tolerate constant pain yet even though she seems weak there is strength to her and during this installment it only grows.
She develops into a leader and emerges as a stronger character, Vayle is equally complex he is stronger and respected even though he is friends with a half breed.
His weakness is Shade he wants her to be stronger yet he doesnt see the person she has become.
There is a huge amount of violence throughout the book and some uncomfortable scenes for some.
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a darker plot, Its an interesting plot that moves at a steady pace and Im sure as the series progresses it will only get better.
Family runs deeper than blood,
There's a cage, One made of pure Darkness, It exists inside us all, We control what goes into this Dark Prison, but not what comes out, For years, we've stuffed into this steel void parts of ourselves we dont like, horrible things others have done to us, unacceptable things we have done.
For years, these things have been despised, People fail to realize the raw power within these neglected parts, They're alive and they're angry, We, as the Sciell, can now see them, We feel the power. In exchange for magnificent strength, we give them what all prisoners wish forescapeand revenge,

This knowledge is lost to the residents of Raesul a village for nonhuman beings.
It was built on secrets created under a barrier well away from the human world, Raesul is a prison. Those that rule only want to control the residents,
The villagers don't know what they really are, Maybe Raesul's destruction will let the DelPraeli see their true selves, The prison walls are coming down, Darkness is changing. The world will suffer. Interesting idea. Halffleshed out. Author's guest post at my blog:

The Plot
The Sciell by Auden Johnson is a dark fantasy novel built around the lives of the DelPraeli, a race of people who have embraced chaos and Darkness, using it to sustain the Lifeblood and harness their powers.
Shade is half human and half DelPraeli, a mixture that most DelPraeli seem to despise with the exception of her adoptive brothers Vayle and Lafayette.
After years of trying to suppress her DelPraeli side and live out her life as a human, Shade returns to the DelPraeli community where opinions about her have largely remained the same.
But while opinions may have stayed the same, the Darkness hasnt and its being controlled by someone whos turned it into a poison for the DelPraeli, making them insane.
Now it is time for Shade to unearth her true powers and find out who is behind the corruption.
The Thinky Bits
The Sciell by Auden Johnson is a novel that defies easy explanation.
The first in a trilogy The Sciell has vague hints of N, K. Jemisin and Alaya Dawn Johnson but with a world building and storytelling thats all Auden Johnson,
There are a lot of secrets in The Sciell but Im not sure if any of them were ever revealed, or if they were it was in such a cryptic and roundabout manner that only created more confusion.
I guess the final reveal will be in book, until then well have to settle for a vagueness thats mild irritating.
I loved Vayles character, his love for his adoptive sister really shown through even with the discrimination he suffered because of it.
It was nice and I wonder what more interesting adventures theyll have in books two and three.
