I got this book for free in exchange for a review,
I really wasn't expecting much, I will say very pleasantly surprised!
The book was actually awesome, I read a lot. I mean a lot My kindle has overbooks still to read, It really takes a lot to impress me! This actually did it,
I was hooked from thest page, I put it down when I was done, I only stopped to fix dinner and take bathroom breaks, I was done ishours and can't wait for the next one, This put a new spin on mythology which was so refreshing! This book was brilliant, If you're a fan of Greek mythology at all, you need to pick up this novel, The story begins with Ruby, a medical student struggling through classes, studying all day, every day, She barely has time to stop in at the local coffee shop for a drink and an Ambrosia bar, She plans to continue her late father's legacy and join Medics for Mercy, working as a doctor in the war, Ruby takes a well deserved break from her schoolwork to play Ash, a chess player who has never been beaten at chess in all the time he's played in the shop and WINS against him.
This causes Ash to take unwanted interest in her because he just cannot figure out how she kicked his butt,
I don't like to leave spoilers in my reviews so I will just stop here, but I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in Greek Mythology, romance, action/adventure : I can't wait for the sequel.
Happy reading! Amazing! I could not put this book down, The author does an excellent job of weaving together a unique perception of the Greek gods, while staying true to the histories and myths that we know of them.
Each character is threedimensional, brought to life through the pages of the book, I fell in love with sweet Ruby and her story, I especially related to her plight in the first pages of the book, as my husband was premed, and went through the exact same worries.
A fresh plot with twists and action, I would recommend to anyone, and am already looking forward to rereading it,
I won this book through Goodreads First Reads, When I first picked up this book I was so extremely excited to finally have my hands on a book that tells tales of Greek mythology with a modern twist.
I've always loved The myths and gods and goddesses of the Greek and Roman mythology world but typically can only enjoy that realm by reading history books or books like the Odyssey or the Iliad.
Not that those books are not good, but I wanted something more and that is what this book gave me,
It quenched my thirst and strong desire for a thrilling adventure with romance, mythology, and storytelling, I had such a blast reading it that I was sad it ended, Miley does an incredible job at keeping everything new and interesting all the while staying true to the tales of mythology that I adore.
I also appreciate that if a reader were to pick up the book having no idea of any Greek or Roman mythology, it would still be understood and enjoyed to the same extent as others who are familiar.
I loved her take on Zeus's son, and on his involvement with a mortal, I found myself imagining I was the mortal experiencing this world of gods and goddesses and what a blast that was!
This book makes me crave ambrosia bars and I've never even had them :
Loved it and I highly recommend it.
This story puts a whole new spin on the phrase, "it's Greek to me", Joannah Miley masterfully weaves well known stories from Greek Mythology in such a way it unfolds a new epic adventure for the Gods of Mount Olympus, providing a new story to entertain us mere mortals.
Thank you, Joannah, for giving my imagination the Wings of Hermes and for offering ambrosia to my heart through Ruby and Ash's romance, Highly recommended : I look forward to book two!!! This was an interesting book, it's not everyday that you stumble on a Greek mythological story of Ares, the God of War.
So it was interesting,I did get fairly frustrated at Ruby Lead character she was one of those needy, clingyBella and Edward sort of irritating.
I loved the way the author portrayed Olympus, though my skepticism of Olympus being over the United states really quiet cancelled out the authenticity of this being a story about a major character in GREEK mythology.
. . but that's just me being fussy, Sobaby, it was decent and well written, and grammarwise good, . . Really decent plot also. If twilightclingy relationships are your thing then by all means you have reached your haven, Joannah Miley's debut novel, The Immortal Game, provided an entertaining read, A story of a human woman, Ruby must decide if she'd be helping mankind better by persuing a career as a doctor, or by marrying and calming the God of War, Ares.
Ms. Miley's representation of the Greek God' various stories seemed reasonably well researched, I remembered the ones she used from my sixth grade class mumblebumble years ago.
Her protagonist, Ruby, is much more fully developed than her other characters, which left me wishing for more, I feel the author missed a wonderful opportunity to give us complex characters in the Gods, Likewise, her relatively tight writing style in the beginning relaxes considerably toward the end of the book, My final complaint was that after setting us up for this epic battle between the Gods because they chafed under the rules set up by Zeus, they settle their differences peacefully by continuing to chafe under Zeus' rules.
While I know the anticipated war was the backstory, it was the compelling reason for much of Ruby's behavior in the last half of the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ruby's trip through Tartarus, I did find myself wishing Ruby had entered the Elysian Fields, where a chance meeting with her deceased father would have been emotionally interesting.
I also think pulling the shade they rescued back into the story as a helper as they tried to escape the wrath of Hades would have been a nice rounding out of his story.
For a debut novel, I thought The Immortal Game was nicely done, I think the book will work well as a YA novel, as well as NA, because of the tasteful way the author avoided graphic sex.
The romance seemed a little rushed, but then who's to know the ways of the Gods Maybe having all of eternity leads directly toward a need to bond quickly.
The Immortal Game grabbed my attention and held it, If you like romance, suspense, adventure, and intrigue, you will love this book,
Im not a regular romance reader, but although the romance between Ruby and Ash carries the story, a lot more happens than just two people falling in love
although, as Miley portrays it, theres no just about falling in love with a God.
Packed with action and adventure, TIG never stops moving, Every chapter is punctuated by a new revelation, every scene tense with desire, conflict, and danger,
The protagonist is a young college student, but I could still relate to her Im a ways beyond my college years, particularly her predicament about what she wants to be, how to please her deceased father, and the struggle between her supposed duty and the direction love is pulling her.
The Greek Gods portrayed in modern times are convincing and at times hilarious, The God of War wears cowboy boots, the Goddess of Love wears tight jeans, Even Mileys minor characters live on the page, like Mark, her studybudy who thinks shes going mad when she starts missing study sessions, or a shade in Hades who must decide whether to jump into the River of Lethe.
The story takes the reader from the streets of Portland to the dangerous halls of Olympus, to the depths of Hades and beyond.
Instead of Alice going into one looking glass, Ruby steps through three, It could have become repetitive, but as Miley presents it, it feels like we are falling deeper and deeper into the story world, The Immortal Game provides the sense of immersion and transportation that Im always looking for when I read a book, I have to admit that when I read the premise of this booka modern mortal woman falling in love with a Greek GodI was skeptical about how the author could make the story work.
But Miley does an excellent job of bringing all the myths to life, and I had fun visualizing the territory from Mount Olympus to Hades.
