Angela was quitting her job by the by, She adored the idea of being adored, even if only by a man like Gueret,
He flees then proceeds to kill another man still in a feverish frenzy, who was watch out! was standing in the middle of the street, because why not
He flees to Paris, but returns in two months to find Angela.
She hasn't turned him in, because in a twisted way, as it turns out in the end, she loves him back because he's her bridge to freedom, However she couldn't continue being an escort, instead has been loathing her disfigured face locked up in her room, She decides to ask Madame Grosgeorge, a client at the washing establishment Angela works at, for money so she can start anew somewhere else, but runs into Gueret, who offers to flee with her.
He proceeds to ask Grosgeorge for money, a bitter, married woman, who fancies Gueret, She shelters him for the night, but by a twist of fate the police comes to arrest Gueret, Madame Grosgeorge attempts suicide, Gueret is locked up, Angela dies and I threw the book on the table because of that frightening last sentence, that made chills rund down my spine.



From the first pages, nay sentences, I felt the irksome industrial greyness ooze from the words, that dragged me in and threw away the key,

All of the characters, except the little girl who's well on her way to the same fate, being Madame Londe's next target has some incoherent meanness in them that's painted in a variety of grey and mud green, without even a touch of yellow or red, that they're desperately seeking.
Later they find that the red turns out to be their blood sacrificed, the yellow their sweat in an impossible, goalless quest for happiness,

So finally once more: What made me read this miserable story so expeditiously

A strange form of curiosity I suppose, I wanted to find out if they make it, if it is possible for these sad, empty people to change for the better,
But I also wanted to break out of this bleak world myself and boy, am I glad that at least I made it

Edit: Here I am months later, reviewing myreading list, stumbling upon this review now with some grammatical mistakes removed about this book I vowed to oppress.
Here I am with a strange tingling at the back of my brain that I need to pick up this book, but a most uncomfortable unwillingness to do so,

I want to reread it, because a thought crept into my mind: Had I interpreted the book correctly Was the main motivation of the characters really happiness, Or was it power, or independence Why can't I recall it, And what was the last sentence

Madame Londe führt ein Restaurant, in dem man billig essen kann, doch das ist nicht der Hauptgrund, weshalb ihre männliche Kundschaft so treu ist die Herren kommen wegen Angèle, des hübschen jungen Mädchens, das ihnen ganz nach ihren Wünschen zu Willen ist.


Paul Guéret ist unglücklich verheiratet mit einer braven, langweiligen Frau, Sein Geld verdient er mit Nachhilfestunden für den Sohn der Grosgeorges, der von seiner verbitterten Mutter ständig getriezt wird, weil sie ebenfalls in ihrer Ehe mit einem viel älteren Mann kreuzunglücklich ist und das Kind sie dauernd daran erinnert.


Guéret verguckt sich in Angèle, und als er erfährt, was diese "beruflich" macht, erwacht in ihm eine gefährliche Mischung aus Liebe, Hass und Eifersucht, und es kommt am Flussufer zu einer verhängnisvollen Begegnung zwischen den beiden, bei der Guéret das Mädchen brutal attackiert, auf der Flucht in wilder Raserei einen wehrlosen alten Mann tötet und sich fortan verstecken muss.
Angèle dagegen ist durch den Übergriff entstellt und glaubt, sich nicht mehr in der Öffentlichkeit zeigen zu können,

Das Geflecht zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen, die hier größtenteils von negativen Gefühlen getrieben sind, von Intrigen und Abhängigkeiten, zieht sich im Verlauf der Handlung immer enger zusammen.
Beeindruckt, ja schon fast geschockt hat mich die Schilderung von Guérets Wutausbrüchen, Wie er in blindem, unreflektiertem Zorn erst auf Angèle und dann auf den alten Mann einprügelt, ging mir sehr an die Nieren, dabei ist die Schilderung nicht blutigeffekthascherisch, sondern eher sachlich.


Richtig sympathisch war mir keiner der Protagonisten, am ehesten noch Angèle und ihre kleine Leidensgenossin Fernande, die von Madame Londe als Nachfolgerin für Angèle "herangezüchtet" wird, aber gerade durch die menschlichen Abgründe, die hier zutage treten, wurde das Buch realitätsnah und glaubwürdig.

Το βιβλίο έχει ανατροπές, θυμίζει κλασικό θεατρικό έργο και το διάβασα όσο πιο γρήγορα μπορούσα, απολαμβάνοντας τη βραδύτητα που δρα προς όφελος του και την εσωτερικότητα που χαρακτηρίζει την συμπεριφορά των προσώπων.

Ο Λεβιάθαν βρισκόταν σε ένα πάγκο πριν από δύο αν δεν κάνω λάθος χρόνια, σε εξευτελιστική τιμή. Τον είχα σε ένα ράφι ξεχασμένο και για κάποιο λόγο είχα την εντύπωση ότι θα ήταν βαρετός και ξεπερασμένος. Πόσο, μα πόσο έξω είχα πέσει

Cette œuvre inoubliable inspira ces mots à Maeterlinck " Je lis peu de romans, car à un certain âge on s'intéresse médiocrement aux petites et charnelles questions sexuelles ou sentimentales qui en forment le fond.


Mais votre Léviathan, c'est autre chose, je l'ai lu sans désemparer, comme si j'avais découvert tout à coup un Balzac souterrain qui promenait sa lampe de mineur dans des ténèbres bien plus épaisses que celles auxquelles nous sommes accoutumés.
Et quelle belle lumière quand, par moments, il sort de sa nuit et regarde le paysage, . . " Wiedergelesen. Der schiere Wahnsinn. Aber schon das überaus ausführliche Vorspiel zur Gewalttat des düpierten Romantikers Guérin an seiner Herzensdame, die jeden ranlässt, nur nicht ihn, wirkt ziemlich herbei geschrieben mit viel zu vielen Worten.

Die Gewalttat und Vergewaltigung hat mich auch nicht überzeugt, weder in Sachen Motivation innerhalb der vorher gehenden Begegnung noch die Szene,
Aber im Vergleich zum letzten Drittel ist sogar Guérins Spur der Gewalt noch mit gelungenen Momenten gesegnet, Gerade die Ratlosigkeit nach dem Abklingen seines Gewaltschubs auf dem Hof einer Kohlenhandlung hat etwas für sich,
Im letzten Drittel gibt es nur noch einen gelungenen Moment, als Madame Grosgeorge, deren Mann mit Angèle ein bezahltes Verhältnis hatte, bemerkt, dass Guérin, nicht wegen ihr, sondern wegen der verhassten Rivalin zurück gekommen ist.

Ein einzelner Lichtblick, der um so deutlicher macht, wie schlampig und schlecht motiviert der Rest mit einer Art Liebestod gelungen ist, den Angèle beim Versuch Guérin zu finden und mit ihm zu fliehen, gestorben ist.

Leviathan hat alle Chancen vor der Ewigkeit Bestand zu haben, meint Iris Radisch, Das langsame Lesetempo, das einem die Prosa von Julien Green aufnötigt, mag am Gefühl der Ewigkeit großen Anteil gehabt haben, Gerade im schwach motivierten und erzähltechnisch ziemlich schwachen letzten Drittel, gerät jede einzelne Seite zur endlosen Qual,
Angesichts der zahlreichen erzähltechnischen Schnitzer und der psychologischen Motivationsmängel entsteht der Eindruck, an ein schlecht redigiertes Anfängerbuch geraten zu sein, Ich habe mich schon lange nicht mehr überwinden müssen, um ein paar letzte Seiten zu lesen,
Bei mir steht Julien Green jetzt auf der Schwarzen Liste und Leviathan schon wieder bei Booklooker, .
