gets written these days that I'm halftempted to instead use Lovecraft's own, less reverent term for it all, and instead refer to YogSothothery the problem being, of course, that it's a phrase easier writ than said.
At the heart of this story there's an idea of a femme fatale, her mate, and a series of paintings, and it's a fine idea, one which could have chilled had it not been so bedecked with Lovecraftian namechecks the painter must be called Pickman Arkham is 'witchhaunted' by the second paragraph that the weight of them all condemns the tale to subside into mere pastiche.
An excellent recrafting of Lovecraft's Pickman's Model, Pillsworth's version is beautifully written with a feminine twist, Loved it.
Another . . torn between the great writing/characters and the disturbing subject matter and dat art, Lel. Oy vey. Ends a bit abruptly, but it's a really vivid story, I'd love to see a pic of Patience's "master eyes", I didn't quite grok thelobed thing, How many times have I read this short story A million,
How many more times will I read it Probably a second million,
It's got a villain heroine, a tortured artist, and the careless evil of the Old Ones, What's not to love Creepy but intriguing, A very solid Lovecraftian tale about two lesser servants who return to Earth, Patience eats passion and talent it seems, and feeds on a painter who wants to make her into his best painting, The plot is pretty pedestrian, but the prose is quite beautiful,
If not to feel guilt is to be blameless, then she had approached perfect innocence in life and achieved it when death had stripped away what little capacity for remorse had ever adulterated her hungry soul.
The resurrection that our Masters Communion allows had left her all wolf, and a wolf is blameless no matter what her depredations, for human compassion is beyond her ken,

sitelink tor. comthema gorgeously written and captured, "the madonna of the abattoir" is a short story about art and damnation, and the love that lies between them, read it sitelinkhere for free, Interesting point of view and deft, powerful writing make this visit to Lovecraft country absolutely enjoyable, read this at: sitelink tor. comthema
The world of the Cthulhu Mythos from the perspective cultists and servants of the eldritch abominations almost always makes for a good story and this was no exception.
The author does an excellent job of matching the narrative voice of a typical Lovecraft protagonist, while also not veering into the purple prose Lovecraft was fond of, There are no particular twists to the plot as the grim ending is apparent from the beginning, but the dread is built nicely as the protagonist's conscience struggles with the games of his monstrous undead wife.

Loosely based on Pickman's Model, located in Arkham and around the Miskatonic University, with some Lovecraftian namedropping Orne, Winthrop thrown into the mix, The story has more of a Clive Barker feel to it for me, which definitely isn't a negative,
sitelink goodreads. com/book/show/ Again, I think my lack of familiarity with Cthulu had no impact on my enjoyment of this story, In fact, this story really has very few markers of the Cthulu mythos instead, for the most part, it reads as a straightforward horror with supernatural elements, I quite enjoyed it, though maybe would have more if it was told from Patience's point of view, Good lovecraftian yarn. Enjoyed the narration style from a servitor of Nyarlathotep that somehow retains some of his previous humanity and is remorseful for what he and his wife do, Pickman's role in the story was also a cool touch,.stars. I love Lovecraft, so this was right up my alley: two servants of the Outer Gods return to Arkham and bad stuff happens, I just wish it had been longer and more fleshed out, Who doesn't love a nice, sanguine riff on "Pickman's Model" Solid mythos addition and subversion,.stars. Half a star off because, though Pillsworth builds character and mood quite effectively, I knew where this story was going pretty quickly, Still more than worth the time,

swoons I should have loved this story with its set up and good visuals, Sadly I couldn't care one way or another about any of the characters and the ending did little to satisfy, In Victorianera Arkham, Redemption Orne observes that art is indeed long and life only too short when a painter chooses Orne's wife Patience, mistress of the Outer Gods, for his model.
