Η Ζέλμα ονειρεύτηκε πάλι ένα οκάπι ναι, άστα, ένα σπάνιο ζώο και όλοι στο χωριό ξέρουν ότι κάθε φορά που συμβαίνει αυτό, κάποιος πεθαίνει. Ξαφνιάζονται, λες και ο θάνατος δεν ήταν πάντα δίπλα τους, δεν τον περίμεναν και τώρα πρέπει να αφήσουν τις αλήθειες τους να βγουν. Γράφουν γράμματα και τα ταχυδρομούν όσοι έχουν φωνές στο κεφάλι τους αφήνουν τα γράμματα μισά, όταν ο θάνατος τους προσπεράσει ζητάνε τα γράμματά τους πίσω. Και γίνονται όλα όπως πριν, μόνο που τώρα πρέπει να ζήσουν με την απώλεια.

Όταν έχεις δει κάτι φωτεινό, κάθε φορά που κλείνεις τα μάτια σου θα εμφανίζεται στο εσωτερικό των βλεφάρων σου. Θα έχει αντιστραφεί η φωτεινότητα, όμως θα είναι εκεί, όσα χρόνια κι αν περάσουν. Η ζωή είναι γεμάτη με μικρές και μεγάλες απώλειες

και ο καθένας κάνει ό,τι μπορεί, φεύγει μακρινά ταξίδια, στρέφεται στη θρησκεία, κάνει ψυχανάλυση, αναζητά γιατρικά και μαντζούνια, είμαστε ενωμένοι απέναντι στις απώλειες, εξίσου αδύναμοι και ευάλωτοι.

Η Leky γράφει μαγικά. Δεν χρειάζεται φραμπαλάδες, αφήνει την ιστορία να ειπωθεί από ένα παιδί που μεγαλώνει διατηρώντας το καθαρό βλέμμα και τη φαντασία ενός μυαλού που δεν φοβάται τις αλήθειες σε μια γλώσσα παραμυθένια και γλυκιά. Όχι γλυκερή, το βιβλίο αυτό δεν σε λιγώνει, σε ζεσταίνει και σε παρηγορεί.

Η ζωή μπορεί να αντιστρέψει τη φωτεινότητα όσων ζήσαμε, μα μέσα μας θα υπάρχουν πάντα τα σημαντικά ακόμα κι όταν φύγουν. Όταν κοιτάζουμε κάτι, μπορεί να χαθεί από τα μάτια μας. Όταν όμως δεν προσπαθούμε να το δούμε, αυτό το Κάτι δεν μπορεί να χαθεί. Θα βρίσκεται πάντα πίσω απ'τα κλειστά μας βλέφαρα. What a wonderfully charming and beautiful book!

I absolutely fell in love with this wonderfully unusual tale, I loved the unusual characters that I was able to meet by the end of the novel they felt like my own family and friends, and I am definitely going to miss them.
I had a particular soft spot for the optician,

This book is repetitive at times, but its meant to be and it works well, It didnt become boring like it can in some books, it was used to create a familiarity with the storyline and the characters which Ive not experienced before.
The only downside for me was I didnt quite feel the sadness I hoped to at times, although that may be because of events in my personal life.
I will definitely miss these wonderful characters, and the stories that came from their little village,

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves an easy and charming read, It almost feels like a book Ive loved my whole life, I want to thank Netgalley, the publishers and Mariana Leky for allowing me to read this book and give my personal thoughts, This book surprised me so much in a good way! After reading the prologue and the first chapter I was thinking "uh oh, I don't know if I'm going to like this one".
I'm glad I kept reading because this was a really good read,

Themes of love and loss, denial, community, and life and death are addressed through the interaction and speech of a group of quirky characters who are delightful.
The setting is a small village in Germany, The central plot is Luisa's life growing up in the village where she experiences a tragic loss as ayear old, unrequited love as a young woman, and finding her place in the world.
Selma, Luisa's grandmother, is another prominent figure in the book, Selma is Luisa's anchor, and she and Luisa are very close, At the start of the book, you find out that when Selma has a dream with an okapi in it, someone in the village dies within a certain number of hours.
So when one of these dreams occurs, news spreads like crazy through the village and puts everyone on edge, Then there are several other quirky, eccentric characters in the book who make up this close community,

No matter the gender, the age or the taste I'm sure everyone will love this book,

I'm usually not a big fan of adult literary fiction so this wasn't even on my toread list but I picked it up on a whim via audiobook and I couldn't be more happy I did.
The synopsis of this book is painfully wrong and I can only urge you to read it despite it not sounding that great plotwise.
The characters are so real and lovable, this book felt like home to me, No matter what I was doing I was constantly thinking about how much I wanted to go back into this story and that's really the best thing a book can do to you.
I loved it.
