It seems I have been listening out of order, to this series by Mark McNease, Newly retired homicide detective moves to the country where she inherited a house from here aunt, Friends visit, a body is found and now the investigation begins, The family of the victim are all suspects, as well as others, Twists, turns and lots of suspense to reach the conclusion,
The narration was well done, The characters were well portrayed, Daniela Acitelli gives a nice performance, This is the first book I read by this author, I really enjoyed it. I've since read other books in his series with Kyle and Linda, and I didn't enjoy those nearly as much, That being said, this is a solid, stand alone novel, Linda is an expolice officer who recently moved to a small town and takes it upon herself to solve a murder mystery, The characters are interesting and likable, The story moves along well enough with a few twists and turns, I would recommend this book, but not any of the other Kyle Callahan series, Death in the Headlights is a strange fish of a mysterya unique spinoff, as it were, of McNease's Pride Trilogy series, featuring gay photographer Kyle Callahan.
In that series, Kyle meets and becomes friends with Homicide Detective Linda Sikorsky, who has been a closet lesbian, “Detective Linda,” as Kyle calls her, appears as a secondary character in the series, In this book, however, Linda has retired from the police force, having inherited from her aunt a cozy house in the country, And she has come out at last, having fallen in love with highenergy real estate broker Kirsten McClellan,
As the book begins, Linda has been living in the new house for several months, so she invites her friend Kyle and his fiancé Danny to spend their vacation there.
The vacation, however, gets off to a particularly bad start when the two find the body of Linda's rich neighbor in a ditch, Seems that the woman had been riding her bicycle down the street at midnight wearing only a thin nightgown and slippers, Are you hooked yet
Call this a cozy mystery if you want there are no street gangs, serial murderers, or laundered money, But greed and avarice are everywhere and Linda was a cop too long not to recognize a good murder when she sees it, As she tells Kyle: ”We walked into a family web there this morning, We just have to determine which of them is the spider, ” But interspersed in her and Kyle's investigation are Linda's plans to open an antique storeas well as her fears that she may be losing the woman she loves.
This book brings into vivid focus just how difficult it is to write a novel, Although the author switches point of view frequently, so that the reader can get a firsthand view of the characterstheir problems, aspirations, and feelingsthe novel still comes in at way underpages.
What would it have been like if it stretched intopages, orpages with a single point of view
If you enjoy reading about lesbian sex Boo, there isnt any.
If you hate reading about lesbian sex: Yay, there isnt any, Instead, you have a couple of gentle, Grated relationships that most people would envy and a murder mystery that plumbs the secret depths of a wealthy family, If this scenario appeals to you, then go ahead and reel in Death in the Headlights from your nearest book or ebook dealer, Youll probably find italong with McNeases other mysteriesa tasty morsel,
Note: I read the ebook edition of this novel that was available in December,,
Another Note: This review is included in my book sitelink The Art of the Lesbian Mystery Novel, along with information on overother lesbian mysteries by overauthors.
I really do enjoy these mysteries, This time Kyle and his partner Danny are visiting now retired Detective Linda at the house in the sticks that her aunt has left to her, Not long after arriving, they discover the body of one of the neighbours, in her nightgown, dead in the road having been knocked off her bicycle,
While no longer a detective, and with Kyle's help, Linda get involved with investigating the troubled lives of her neighbours, At the same time she's struggling with her fiancee, Kirsten, who seems to be pulling away from her, Danny as usual is not keen on Kyle getting involved with investigating a murder, but Kyle in his usual laid back way does what he wants,
It's Linda who is more involved with the investigation thank Kyle, making this more a gay mystery than romance, though it does finish with both couples setting a date for their respective weddings and a trip to NY pride Like the previous books, the murderer is revealed too soon.
Lots of repetitiousness in descriptions, recaps the whole series desperately needs sharp editing, McNease will write something beautiful then follows with one of those recaps, Death in the headlights: I have read McNeases pride series and enjoyed his writing and characters, This book was more about Detective Linda, a character that I enjoyed from the pride series, Detective Linda retires even though I doubt she will ever stop chasing crime, and moves to the country after inheriting her aunts house I want McNease to give her a white picket fence in the worst way.
McNease weaves a good story and places Detective Linda and Kyle right in the thick of it, making her juggle crime and her new love Kirsten, I dont want to give anything away, but I have to say shes still got it, What I like best about this character is her ability, She was a good cop, she has great senses, and she can enter stealth mode when necessary, Im looking forward to more stories about this character, This is a decent mystery, Just too much repetition. Short, quick, enjoyable and entertaining light murder mystery,
People are just a devious and greedy in the country as they are in the city, Every family has their secrets,
Linda a retired police officer who has recently moved to the country takes it upon herself to solve a murder mystery that has happened in her new neighborhood.
Daniela Acitelli does the narration for this story, While I have listened to several books she has narrated before her narration just does not flow smoothly this time, She does have a pleasant voice and speaks clearly, Her character voice for Linda was really good, But it sounds like she has not preread the material of is not familiar with it, There are pauses in awkward places and there is to much emphasis put on too many words, While this may not be her best work, she is better than many narrators I have heard,

Its been six months since the Pride Gallery murders in Manhattan, Kyle Callahan and his partner Danny Durban head to rural New Jersey for a relaxing week with their dear friend, Detective Linda Sikorsky, recently retired and newly in love.
Driving back from dinner with Linda and her fiancée Kirsten, they discover the body of Abigail Creek, run off the road on a bicycle wearing only her nightgown and slippers.
Kyle and Linda quickly find themselves learning more than they want to know about the Creek family and the home they call CrossCreek Farm, In the words of Clara Presleys grandmother, “Whatever grows there, grows in the shadows, ” Come along as Linda and Kyle make their way into the shadows and enter the spiders web, determined to find out who in this family of spiders is the deadliest one.
A well written mystery with likable characters, What is interesting about this series is that you get to see things from the side of the killer as well as the protagonist, Lies, betrayal and a family secret lead to murder in this tale,
I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters were likeable,
Detective Linda may have retired from the force but those instincts dont just go away so when her and her friends find a body by the side of the road she just has to get to the bottom of it.
The narrator does a great job with the characters and has a pleasant voice to listen to, This was a quick murder mystery, There was nothing too shocking or graphic, and it was an easy read, This was my first experience with the series, and though I was able to follow along with everything specific to the "case", I felt I was missing some of the personal background.
It still came together and worked as a stand alone, but I could definitely tell it was meant to be in a series,
The voicing and characters all come across as a little onedimensional and similar, It would be nice if the characters were recognizable from the voicing or tone rather than just the text,

The publisher's blurb is pretty lousy, but the novel is really good, One one hand, it's kind of a romance of a newly engaged retired police detective with issues, and it also tells of growing friendships within a group, The murder and it's convoluted investigation, the dysfunctional family dynamics of the suspects, and the surprising twists comprise the real intent, and is very well done, As a history geek, I was delighted by the brief historical bits inserted as appropriate to several locations,
Daniela Acitelli does very well with the audio performance by clearly differentiating characters and moods, Oh, this book is from Detective Linda's sorry, I can't help myself POV, and I love that we get to know her and her partner Kirsten a bit more.
Kyle and Danny are visiting Linda at the house she has just inherited from her aunt deep into the rural zone of New Jersey, Of course, as every time that Linda and Kyle get together, they get involved in a crime, This time, by stumble right into the dead body of Abigail Creek on the road,
A nice, solid mystery :D
