When I first heard the title of the book, my thoughts were "Kabute" bakit kaya sa lahat naman ng pwedeng maging title bakit kabute ang naisip ng author And so when I had the opportunity to read about it nakita ko ung connection ng title sa story niya.
Even though it was clearly a FICTION book we all knew the current status of Nurses in the Philippines, and it is always have been overwhelmed by the numbers of Nursing Graduates, Schools and those who take and passed the Board Exam.
For me it was a very good book to start with, especially for those who are not medically inclined, It reflects the life of most of nursing students and graduates, And It is a reminder that in whatever profession one has sworn and taken, people who tried so hard to get there licenses should not be a victim of fraud, injustice, and opportunistic money makers who abused the over supply of nurses in our country.
Everyone is entitled to be treated in a humane way, Somehow connected with the law of scarcity, The more supply you have in a commodity the more the value drops, But people should not be treated as a commodities, we are more than that, : we are highly skilled and armed with knowledge and experience, We are more capable of so many things, So for the writer who exposed the truth between the lies, HATS OFF! Cheers to that! I hope you can write more books that can inspire people not to be meek and have more courage to stand for what they believe is TRUE and JUST.
May you inspire more people! and make use of your God given talent not just being a writer but an advocate, : Story wise tapos first novel pa, hats off to Nurse Raymond Garcia, Nurse din ako but not in practice pero nkkralate ako sa story, Khit sabhin pang fiction to, alam mong may basis ang author, Great work! For a first novel, Raymond Garcia did very well, I liked this book.
Kabute: Ang Pagsibol Translation: Mushroom: The Blossoming is about the life story of Randell, a male Filipino nurse, The novel opens when he is enrolling in a university and still undecided what course to take up and closes with him searching his own place under the sun.
There is currently an oversupply of nurses and nursing graduates in the Philippines brought about by the overwhelming global demand that happened more than a decade ago.
During that time, nurses became prized commodities due to AIDS scare and young people overseas shied away from nursing profession,
When we interviewed Jun Cruz Reyes for sitelinkPinoy Reads Pinoy Books, one of his advices was for us, book lovers who dream of writing novels someday, to write about what is happening around us.
This is what Raymond Garcia did, He is registered nurse and currently, luckily, working as one, However, he is a witness to what is going with the oversupply that the government is failing to address, Well, what I know is that the government put restrictive measures to monitor the quality of nursing schools, Also, the widelyknown fact that most nursing graduates and board passers no longer get to go abroad to earn dollars or not even to practice their professions here in the Philippines.
Rather, they end up doing jobs unrelated to their profession like BPO call center, selling insurance, gym instructors I had a nursing graduate personal trainer two years ago and become private nurses taking care of people with disabilities, infants as yaya or old people like nurse Jisson, the one taking care of myy/o fatherinlaw.
The best part in Raymond Garcia's revelation here is how some hospitals are taking advantage of the oversupply that the nursing graduates, Because they want to gain experience, a requirement for them to apply for vacancies abroad, those nursing graduates are even the ones who have to pay the hospitals even if they
are asked to do backbreaking shift works.
Outright, that is unfair. Volunteerism is nice but there has to be a compensation even if it is just to pay for the volunteer's food and transportation, We have college I. T. information technology interns in our company and we pay enough to cover the interns' daily expenses, In return, they get to complete not only their school required hours for practicum but also actually experience the actual job of working as an I.
T. in a multinational company.
My only two small complaints about this book are the following:too much details, Raymond Garcia really followed the rule: show, don't tell, However, in the process, it became an overkill, there are just too much unnecessary details that at times, the book becomes a uninteresting for me, I thought a bit of control, another rule in writing, should have been done so as not to give everything away andthe love story between Randell and Kris is just so corny I wanted to stop reading in the first half of the book.
I know that this could be Raymond Garcia's ticket for the novel to be read by romance books' fans but, for me, it is an unwanted distraction to what this Kabute's main and urgent message: uplift the fate of Filipino nurses.
No need to provide a springboard like Jack and Rose in that Titanic movie, That formula is now passe, Well, for me.
Why mushroom or kabute On page, Raymond Garcia mouths through his character Randell: "Like fungi, there are also people who are parasites with each other.
" To which Kris responds: "Mga opportunistic, bes for bestfriend, " This is true. I have an exfriend who encouraged me to give him things gifts or assistance and when he felt that I would no longer give him anything, he started seeing me less and less and moved to other interests rather than reading and book club.
Such an opportunist, that person is, I am glad that I am over and done with him, Lesson learned: never trust anyone posing like somebody in need of help when in fact, he/she is only milking you for some cash or favor, He is my example of kabute much like some of Raymond Garcia's nasty characters, named or unnamed, in this book,
Overall, this is a nice Pinoy book, Wellwritten. Nicely assembled. Great blurb from one of my Pinoy authors that I admire: none other than Lualhati Bautista!,
You should be proud of your work, Raymond Garcia and may you have more books to come!
Congratulations!
Mabuhay ang mga Filipino nurses!.
