Collect An Unyielding Desire (After The End, #2) Crafted By Kit Tunstall Shown As Softcover
months after a solar event and government sabotage crippled most of the world's electronics, Mina and her family endure on their farm, At first, the return of her brotherinlaw and the remaining members of his Army platoon is cause for celebration, but it doesn't take Mina long to discover he has brought a dangerous man into their midst.
Determined to claim Mina for his own, Shane's pursuit is relentless, She finds solace in Cooper, but knows she can't act on her attraction if she wants to keep everyone safe from Shane, When Coop discovers Shane's true nature, a violent confrontation ensues that splits the group and brings more danger to the farm, leaving the group fighting not just to survive, but to keep their haven intact.
Only once in reviewing more than seventyfive books have I honestly said "I just couldn't put it down, " Unyielding Desire is the second book about which I can say that, It's a tightly paced, very wellwritten novel that will keep you turning the pages until considerably past your bedtime,
When a tattered and torn group of soldiers arrives at the Marsden homestead in the year, eleven months after the end of civilization, nineteenyearold Mina is intrigued.
She has resigned herself to never finding a man to be her mate in the apocalyptic world that now surrounds her,
That all changes quickly and not in a good way, One day, as Mina is feeding the chickens, the dangerous and sadistic former lieutenant of the squad, Shane, brutally rapes her, and threatens to kill her family if she tells anyone.
Terrified and traumatized, Nina becomes his sexslave, gradually losing her selfesteem and any thought of fighting back, It's a gripping portrayal of someone who, over the course of several months, adopts Stockholm Syndrome symptoms, often blaming herself for the abuse he so painfully inflicts in the name of "love.
"
The first part of the book is riveting and often gutwrenching, as the reader is forced to watch Mina's torture unfold, while all around them the rest of the extended new family goes on about its daily business.
Another soldier, Cooper, is puzzled at Mina's obvious desire to be with him although when he tries to take their friendship to the next level, she literally runs the other way in a panicky attempt to protect both him and her secret.
Little does Cooper know the indignities Mina must endure nightly at the hands of Shane, who steals into her room late each evening to terrorize her, then slips away well before dawn.
Indeed, the reader will be checking the page count after awhile, aghast at the possibility that, in this case, at least, evil seems to hold permanent sway over justice and good.
Without revealing too much, events unfold that finally release Mina from her terrible bondage but the price is high, And with that freedom comes deadly uncertainty,
The second half drags a bit as Shane takes a puzzling, outofcharacter redemptive turn, His subsequent actions and the endless moralizing of the other characters puts a damper on what otherwise is a worthy read, The action picks up a bit near the semisurprising end, however, and, while it's not exactly a happilyeverafter conclusion, it's close enough,
These are complex characters, as welldrawn as if the subjects were all taken from some compound in which Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is the norm rather than the exception.
Who knows how people would really behave in a world gone to hell, as this one has, The author does a good job of not pulling any punches to let you see the awful possibilities, Be ready to be shocked,
On balance, Unyielding Desire deserves five for its sheer grittiness and raw ability to stir even the most jaded reader's emotions.
I won this book in a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway and I'm so glad to have had the honor of reading it!!!
This was my first Kit Tunstall book but definitely will not be my last.
I was hooked from the first page and that led to a sleepless night!! But it was so worth it! The Definition of a must read!! Great book.
This was an emotional roller coaster, Mehhh, I was so excited to read After The Endbecause I really enjoyed part, Note: each in the series is set in the same world, but feature unrelated characters at different time points, . . Stand alone.
Big Problems W/ The World amp Plot:
The dystopian plot of the book wasn't satisfying, Kind of in the way being given a one month snippet of someone's life from WWnazi Germany wouldn't be fulfilling without any account for how it started or turned out.
I hate extensive, fluffy background info, but, with dystopians, there has to be some for readers to get a feel for the setting and character plights.
Here, there's little about what happened to cause the End, little about how the soldiers managed to get to the farm, little about really anything outside of the farm goings on for most of the book.
By reading the first book, which is set in the distant future to this one with a different cast of characters, I have a picture of how the world eventually looks.
However, that does little to add a finality, resolve to the characters here,
Even in the end, it's a really bleak future with nothing progressing forward concerning the future of the characters within the world.
In fact, one character is thrown out of the farm in the final paragraph of the book amp readers don't have a clue what his fate may hold.
One MC may or may not have lost an eye!
PTSD, Rape, amp Romance:
The 'bad' character in this book beats, rapes, and otherwise harasses and abuses the female MC over several months.
She progresses from being afraid to oust him, to tolerating him, to developing feelings for him, This occurs in conjunction to "falling in love" with another guy, The abuse is discombobulated with all sorts of terms casually thrown about, such as Stockholm syndrome amp PTSD, A fair portrayal of the psychology of abuse is absent here! Aside from the initial rape, the female MC's reactions to the sexual "abuse" isn't realistic and is confusing/blurring the lines between kinky sex and rape.
Simply put, a rape victim may often feel they can't fight back, . . but they don't orgasm multiple times during the rape, they don't go to bed naked knowing the rapist is due for his nightly rape sex, they don't willingly tell the rapist they love him, they don't enjoy ANYTHING about the violator! It was beyond weird and offputting as a reader, and I'm quite sure offensive to victims of rape.
The other guy, the supposed good guy, says he loves her, Yet, when she begs him not to leave her with the abuser because he will hurt her, he chooses not to believe her on two separate occasions.
So, this dude isn't exactly a knight in shinning armor,
We all know that abusers can go from violence to charm in the drop of a hat, However, I don't think I've ever seen an abuser go from things like beating the female MC unconscious, murdering a team member, and shooting ayearold girl in the head to a selfsacrificing martyr so that the object of his obsession can ride off into the sunset with another dude.
Nah, ain't buying it.
Can't say I recommended this book to anyone, for any reason:/
I won this book as a Free Read.
Like they say in the GEICO commercial, "When you're in a horror movie you make poor decisions", Same goes for romance novels, This book is a combo of both, and the main character, Mina makes a poor decision by allowing her rapist to bully her into silence.
Nevertheless, despite her continued poor decision making not sure when these guys find her so desirable, but that also happens in many romance novels, the book was written well, the story continually flowing and not dragging at any point.
If you like Walking Dead and the cancelled Revolution, you will like this book, and I suppose the series, though this is the only one I have read so far.
I received an ARC from the author for an honest review,
I started out expecting to not like the storyline, I was surprised, pleasantly! There were many times I wanted the villain to get killed only to have him show a small sign of humanity.
The twists and turns kept me interested, The secrets of the heroine kept me screaming at her, And the end made me gasp, Although the book is set about a century before the first in the series, it isn't conflicted, You could read either book first but I agreed with the order, It gave you a sense of what occurred and why, I can't wait to see where it goes from here, How both families continue on and any connections between them, Kit lives in Idaho with her husband and two sons, She enjoys writing several genres and subgenres, When she started publishing, dinosaurs roamed the earth, and authors had one pen name with their publisher, That was the name you wrote everything under, no matter how dissimilar, Thanks to advances in publishing, its now easy to have than one pen name, and many readers have come to expect a certain type of book experience from each author.
