I enjoyed reading about the hijinks and lasting friendships of these men, I did not enjoy the book,
The editing / proofreading is so poor as to be nonexistent, I understand wanting to keep Mr Scalin's speech rhythm, but that could have been done without the jarring errors in punctuation and other grammatical errors.
If poor editing does not bother you, add a star,
This book was provided to me at no cost, This book was fun for me to read as the author was born three years after my Dad and the same year as my Mom.
From stories told by many aunt and some of my Dad's friends, he would have got in with Herd, It was a history lesson taught in a fun way and learned that my generation wasn't too different from my parents.
My Mom had passed and Dad lives near me now, so I learning his stories one at a time, This book reminds me that I need to write them down XX This is a book baby boomers will love! Bill Scalin writes a sharp pictograph of the life of the average teen in the late's's.
Bill takes us through the joy and angst of growing up just offrd street in Cleveland, Ohio, the extended family feel of the entire neighborhood, the brews, the cars, the hair styles of the American teen.
Even those of us raised in small towns in the desert recognize this 'place' in time with nostalgia and a bit of regret.
Most of us would never go back to the person we were, but we could all do with the neighborhood again!
A quick read, I would recommend this book to all my baby boomer class of readers, and their children.
My daughter is laughing as she reads The Herd fromrd, as I write this review, I could't say it better than this review fron R, Kucera on Amazon and I quote,
"The Herd by Scalin served to be a time capsule of my own childhood, of long gone relatives and neighborhood friends and the almost forgotten experiences were once again brought to mind with a smile and a light hearted calmness that gently brought me back in time.
The presentation of those more quite and simple times brings back pleasant recollection of how thing were, so different so much more innocent and compelling.
than the way things are today,
The way that Bill's introduces and describes his relatives display the closeness, the love and care that his family had for each other.
His upbringing and the cycles of becoming a young man are revealed as his inner person uncovers some of the ways and whys that his life had changed.
It seams that the most life changing event in Bill's life was the meeting with and joining of the "Herd fromrd" at the
impressionable age of.
Was this a blessing or was it a situation that could end up destroying his morals and upbringing, First impression Well, these guys seem to be a lot of fun but being the new guy, he's got to test the waters so to speak before he makes any long range commitments.
Bill tells that as time goes by, he becomes, "one of the boys" and it leads to somegood times and some times that weren't so good and could in fact lead to some serious consequences.
Scalin over time comes to the realization that the Herd is really in it for the long haul and wonders why the bond that he discovered at sixteen continues to be as close some forty years later.
The answer of this fairly unusual likelihood can be revealed and embraced as you read about "The Herd fromrd.
" by the way I am R, Kucera I was one of the herd, " The Herd fromrd by William Scalin is a book filled with captivating memories and humorous moments from Scalins own life.
Upon turning fifty, Scalin is thrown a surprise birthday party, Attending this party are many of his lifelong friends or otherwise known as “The Herd fromrd”, Seeing all his friends in one place causes memories of growing up with them to overflow, resulting in a book that makes me wish that I too could belong to the Herd fromrd.
In The Herd fromrd Scalin shares his love for his friends, beer and cars, Scalin grew up in a time when friendship and loyalty still meant something, I find it amazing that Scalin has so many good friends, Today it is so hard to find just one loyal friend, This shows me that Scalin is a pretty cool person to know, This book also taught me a couple of things, The first is a new way to look for a job, Reading the obituaries is a pretty genius idea, The second is how to teach my child to appreciate her things more, by getting her to clean them each time she uses them.
The story I found the funniest in The Herd fromrd is when Harold bought the bar, Personally I think Harold knew what he was doing the whole time and was not crazy, Reading this book also made me realize how times have changed, Now days if a member of a school staff puts their hands on you in any way it is a lawsuit.
What the vice principal did to Scalin was uncalled for,
I really enjoyed reading about Scalins and his friends lives in The Herd fromrd, It reminded me of the stories my dad told me about his life growing up, I do wish I grew up then when things seemed to be easier, I recommend this book to anyone who needs a glimpse of the past,
William Scalin, after his surprise fiftieth birthday party,
comes to a startling realization as to needing answers as to
why his friends were so freespirited and carefree and had
remained friends after some fifty plus years Compared to
family members who were so reserved and serious.
Years later he decided to write this memoir using stories
he felt that could never be found anywhere else and just were
begging to be told.
Relating stories from his grandparents, parents, and family
members experiences, including the murders of both
grandparents by local Pittsburgh gangsters.
He then compares
them to his own life experiences, Bill goes on to explore his
own early childhood memories in a comparative study,
including an assault charge with a squirt gun, shooting at
a driver with a Japanese sniper rifle loaded with a lit firecracker!
Mr.
Scalin then begins the arduous task of introducing
some of his fifty plus friends of the Herd in Cleveland, Ohio
in the sixties not an organized gang, but just a group of
neighborhood guys drawn together for reasons that Bill
explores in this book.
His accountings of the early years contain many true stories and characters that are both memorable and entertaining, Some of his memories border
on the unbelievable like, the time when Wild Bill Gambel fell in an open cement mixer to the
hilarious story about the Cleveland cop telling him and Jerry
Smolek to have a nice day after going eightyfive in a fortyfive with a bottle of scotch on the front seat.
Bill continues by reliving a sad story of Teddy the cop accidentally shooting a fellow officer to death and takes a curve to share two miracle stories of his problems with cliffs, jagged rocks and near death by drowning.
