on The Small and Rural Academic Library: Leveraging Resources and Overcoming Limitations

was a very helpful book as I prepare to become a librarian at a small and rural college, Each chapter was written by a different librarian or small group of librarians, and it covered topics like managing student workers and collaborating across departments.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to read it all before returning it, but I'm excited to return to it as a useful guide moving forward! This book addresses a worthy and needed topic.
Those of us who work in very small or rural academic libraries face unique challenges not often addressed in the LIS literature, Most research and publication is done by librarians at large institutions, so ends up addressing issues from the assumption of multiple librarians with specific responsibilities and focus.
When there is only one, or two, or three librarians on staff many of these best practices and new ideas simply do not scale.
Unfortunately, I found this book a bit uneven in the quality and usefulness of the various essays, A few of the chapters were helfpul, in particular chapter"Technology Triage: Assessing and Managing Library Systems and Projects" by Michael Rodriguez, University of Connecticut.
Several chapters seem to be little more than a "this is what we did" case study with a little bit of literature review slapped on top.
Inspirational, perhaps,

but not always offering much in generalizable help, Still, a useful contribution to the field, that can perhaps lead to more research on the unique needs and challenges of the small or rural academic library.
