is an excellent primary source book on the life and work of Richard Serra, The book contains thirteen interviews between Hal Foster and Serra that cover a range of topics such as Serras origins working in the steel industry as a young boy his films and early splash works and his influences, art historical and otherwise.
Serras process is at the core of each interview, From time to time Serras wife Clara WeyergrafSerra suggests a notion or adds to the conversation her voice breaks up what could have been a monotonous situation.
While the book is meant for the field who else but art historians want to read about “gestalt theory” and “tectonics” for fun, it remains accessible to anyone who wants to listen in on a conversation between a leading art historian and arguably one of the best, and most controversial, sculptors of our era.
Of course, Tilted Arc is discussed, and I think Serras position on what happenedyears ago when the work was
removed from Federal Plaza is more nuanced now then it was at the time.
Anyway, the loss of Tilted Arc was everyones loss, as we see it now, My only criticism is that I would have liked to know more about the surfaces of his work, how he attains that amazing skin of his works, that varies from a textilelike drape, to a deep crackle, to a drip.
I was surprised at some of Serras answers, in particular his dismissal of David Smith, whom I think lines up historically with Serra so well industrial process, attention to surface.
Foster asks some good questions nevertheless and keeps the conversation rolling throughout the book, Amazing book of interviews with an artist who doesn't need a curator speaking in order to make his ideas clear,.Sf“The rhythm of the body moving through space has been the motivating source of most of my work, ” Richard Serra
Drawn from talks between celebrated artist Richard Serra and acclaimed art historian Hal Foster held over a fifteenyear period, this volume offers revelations into Serras prolific sixdecade career and the ideas that have informed his working practice.
Conversations about Sculpture is both an intimate look at Serras life and work, with candid reflections on personal moments of discovery, and a provocative examination of sculptural form from antiquity to today.
Serra and Foster explore such subjects as the artists work in steel mills as a young man the impact of music, dance, and architecture on his art the importance of materiality and site specificity to his aesthetic the controversies and contradictions his work has faced and his belief in sculpture as experience.
They also discuss sources of inspirationfrom Donatello and Brancusi to Japanese gardens and Machu Picchurevealing a history of sculpture across time and culture through the eyes of one of the mediums most brilliant figures.
Introduced with an insightful preface by Foster, this probing dialogue is beautifully illustrated with duotone images that bring to life both Serra's work and his key commitments.
