Downes book Sleeping Island the Story of One Man's Travels in the Great Barren Lands of the Canadian North, Now everyone in the family has read the book, It is an accurate portrait of theirmile canoe trip which took/weeks, The planned well. Although it was not easy, they suffered no permanent hardship, They really got in touch with nature and tried themselves to leartn about their own nature, I was hoping for more from this book, but I will still give itbecause it did convey the challenges of wilderness living, trekking, portaging and canoeing to a large extent.
My preference would have been for more details on the plants and animals of the subarctic in summer, along with more pictures, It reads more like a diary of the day to day banalities such as 'it was my turn to cook dinner', 'the sky was grey', 'we covered overmiles' etc.
with an occasional foray into the philosophical, .

What really sticks with me is the descriptions of so many lakes, And when I look at a map of the region I am awestruck by the

amount of blue! I would love to make this journey some day, and the practical advice in this book is excellent.


And of course, kudos to Kazaks for even putting the journey details down on paper, This is a mustread for anyone who is thinking of a summer canoe trip in the far north, This was a wonderful book, full of adventure and lovely descriptions of wild northern Canada, but also wrestling with the human element of four men on anmile canoe journey.
Author Peter Kazaks uses just the right combination of each day's paddle interspersed with asides about meals, portaging, insect bites, and the meaning of life, His observations about the status of the Inuit and Canada's aboriginals reveals a littlediscussed aspect of Canadian society, From Reindeer Lake is a welcome summer diversion,
