I didn't know why I bought this book when it first presented itself to me in a bookstore while I was travelling in the US, but here I am,months later, reading this like it's my lifeline to the next threefive years of my life.
Ilana, I am so grateful! Thank you! too basic and gimmicky, undermines the reader but it could be used as just a fun exercise book, still useful in its own silly way, This was an enjoyable and insightful experience! I rarely read books that require you to be so active, so I had to make sure I was in the mood to work before picking this one up.
Ilana Griffo has created a neat little book to guide you through everything you should consider as you start to take action on your early stage idea.
Early parts of the book felt a little beginner to me, but other sections were more helpful and had useful exercises,
Good stuff, and the author is local! Ive enjoyed using her Rule the World planner for years now and am glad to see her having so much success.
Hello again! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend soaking up fall and doing autumn things! My review this week is a long time in the making: I think Ive been reading Mind Your Business since I started collegeand I graduated last December.
And thats not to say its bad, as evidenced by my four star review! More on that later,
Griffos workbook is an awesome starttofinish, crawl walk run of a book for small business owners in creative fields, She takes you from the brainstorming stage, through understanding work life balance, all the way to resources and tools to help you grow and stay profitable, I loved her mix of personal accounts and advice combined with solid resources and plans to help you get from point A to point B, The workbook style makes it easy to stop and reflect,
Like I was saying, Ive legitimately been reading this book for years, and I think I might be reading it for several more years, I can now officially say that I have successfully read the book cover to cover, but this is definitely an awesome resource Im going to keep coming back to.
From the time I picked it up to the time I finally finished it, I had no fewer than three completely different business ideas, Every time I had a new one I wanted to flesh out I would grab my eraser and work my way back to
page one to start from the top.
Mind Your Business functions like the step before a business plan, which works well when you consider many small business owners might start with something just like this instead of skipping right to a thirty page plan.
I picked up Mind Your Business for the third and probablynotfinal time recently because I was considering a graphic design business, and I think now that Ive made it to the end, I might just go out and buy another copy to fill in.
Ive got far too many eraser marks in mine now to start again, but theres just some really sound and valuable advice in this book that I think provides a great starting point and an excellent resource when you struggle.
My only complaint is that it sometimes feels preachy, I think theres a selfhelp element to this book that I didnt necessarily dislike but that occasionally became more boring and repetitive, and less constructive and helpful, I dont think theres anything wrong with providing that sort of “are you cut out to run a business” sort of advice, though, I went to business school, Ive been pretty sure for a couple years now that this is the kind of thing I eventually want to do, But if you work in a creative career, and youre thinking about striking it out on your own Its actually really important to be asking yourself some of these questions.
A workbook is certainly cheaper than a failed business, In that respect, I think the flow of this book is awesome,

Perfect for those starting out, but if youve already dipped your feet into the world of owning your own business, youll find most of the information basic.
This was a great initial guide to starting a business, It's simple but really gets you thinking, This book essentially created my first road map and sparked the beginning of a business plan which is exactly what I needed at the time, Nothing super useful in this book, It's fulled with passe encouragements and lists, but no real guidance, institutions, or thinking prompts to stimulate you for completing the lists, The lists could be found on any "How to" website or blog, Really disappointed in this book, I do not understand how this book has so few reviews, It is one of the best business books I read in, It is clear, informative and SOOOO visually appealing, I am going to be referring to this book for the rest of my life! Perfect for the creative entrepreneur! This is the biz book Ive been waiting to hold in my hands for weeks! Its a practical yet inspiring workbook to help you achieve your goals and dreams! I love how Ilanas love of typography comes into plays and makes the book that much more fun to enjoy! I cant wait to see how it helps me reach for the! In many ways, I could have written this book.
It had good reminders and foundational ideas for smallbusiness creators, This book is useful if you find yourself somehow lost and not together with your plans/perspectives,
This book is organized as a planner and an 'ideas gatherer' that will somehow make you decide your perspective on your activity, It doesn't contain large paragraphs of content, is mainly organised on tables and inputs for you to fill in in the hope you'll see your ideas better on the paper.
It's not exactly what I was looking for but I can see why some people might find it useful, Maybe when you are quite at the very beginning of your journey and don't know where to start or how to see your business/profile this might help, This book is gorgeously designed, Not only is it beautiful and a pleasure to read, it's a nice little workbook for me as I decide how to turn my creative interests into a business.
