After ending their first novel with tantalizing potential for future installments, authors Drew Callander and Alana Harrison are back with an adventure equally as daring and fresh.
After a massive battle that leaves Astorya partially in shambles, its time for You to help pick up the pieces.
Fortunately, your cadre of wacky friends are back to help You secure the Original original, Callander and Harrison play up these relationships while tossing in some new complications as they help You search for originals, head down to the Other Side, and sample copious amounts of dipping sauces.

Its a treacherous mission that manages to bridge the first book while offering an entirely new, compelling story.
The Other Side proves to be a seedy city center where monsters roam free and dark thoughts permeate the denizens minds.
Yet Callander and Harrison mine it for every joke imaginable, including perhaps one of the zaniest fights for political office in literature.
From clever puns to grossout humor, they run the gamut and the result is a book that elicits both snorts and groans in the

Similarly to the first book, there are plenty of opportunities for interaction, and You are fully immersed in the story.
Fillintheblank storytelling, drawing, and even puzzlesolving all feel integrated and important to the actionrather than the distraction they could have easily become.
It was a major feat the first time around, and its astounding that Callander and Harrison have maintained this high standard.

Of course, it should be noted that Ryan Andrewss illustrations are back, and this time he gets to show off a more villainous side.
Andrews depicts The Other Side as a hilariously creepy city, and his cockroach detail is a highlight,

The Edge of the Word manages to have everything a great sequel should: hilarious jokes, all the best characters with some great new additions, and some surprising twists.
Above all, its refreshingly fun,

Note: I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher,

also posted at sitelink wordpres I loved the first book and this one is just as fun, The story is inventive, fastpaced and full of the same humor and wild imagination which will keep readers of all ages engaged and amused.
The puzzles and sections where you have to create your part of the story are clever and allow you to personalize the adventure.
It's a little darker than the original but none the worse for that and certainly not something that would frighten the younger readers.
Strongly recommended. The exciting followup to Mightier Than the Sword, the humorous and fantastical interactive middlegrade novel which needs you, the reader, to get in on the action!

The second book set in Astorya places you back in the driver's seat.
You're a real human being we assume, and in this fictional world, that makes you a superhero, Armed with your trusty pencil, you have the power to create, What you write, draw, or scribble in the book becomes part of the story!

You must journey to Astorya's Other Side, a place of monsters and mayhem, to hide the Original original forever.
Surely nothing bad could happen to Astorya's precious document there, right But when the plan goes awry and digital doppelgangers are unleashed on the world, once again only you can save the day.

Write, draw, and puzzle your way through a hilarious adventure story that is unique to every reader! And, most importantly, prove that the pencil is mightier than the sword.

THE EDGE OF THE WORD is another absolutely delightful interactive story, where you are the main character in the book.
In these books, you have been thrust into Astorya, a fictional land, where you don't know your name and are only armed with a pencil.
The book includes fillintheblank madlib style entries, puzzles, mazes, and places where you can draw the way you would imagine something.
The vast majority of the book remains the actual plot/story line, so the entries are a bonus for the tenacious middle grade reader.

The first book ended with you saving Astorya from Queen Rulette, This second book starts right after the first one ended where you must again save Astorya by protecting the Original the story that created Astorya.
In this journey, you and the gang must go to the Other Side of the page, A whole new and completely ridiculously delightful story awaits, Filled with funny moments, clever puzzles, and all sorts of interesting characters, this book is another charmer in the series.

What I loved: These books have a lot of potential in that they can be really interactive and engaging.
I could easily see these being a classroom read, where students complete the puzzles/tasks together or alone, The story itself is really strong, so the interactive parts are just a bonus, Astorya is quite imaginative with plenty of comedy and action/adventure, The footnotes are also completely delightful and add some extra fun to the book,

Final verdict: This is a really fantastic middle grade series that I would highly recommend for this audience.
Fans of SIDEWAYS STORIES OF WAYSIDE SCHOOL, CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE books, fairy tales, mad libs, and puzzles will all find something to delight in this unique new series.

Please note that I received an ARC, All opinions are my own, Since my review pile has long surmounted the roof of the houseand myyearold son had snatched up this one when I wasn't lookingI'm going to share his thoughts.
For clarification, he is a Rick Riordan fan and a huge fan of The Wings of Fire series, Simply said, he devoured this book in two sittings he does have to do homework, school and such and found it hilarious.

He says that the characters are crazy, the humor is weird and funny, and it's one of the strangest books he's ever read.
And it was awesome. He wishes there were more books like this one and likes how the authors didn't hold to the usual 'rules'.
He recommends it and thinks everyone should have a chance to read it,

Now, if that's not a great review, then I don't know what is,

I received an ARC copy and these are my sons honest thoughts, Another fun book where you are part of the story, Includes fillin the blank stories, places to draw, and anotherpage maze, I really, really love these mazes,

Thoughts:
The Edge of the Word picks up about an hour after the first book in the series, Mightier than the Sword, ends.
At the end of the first book, we left off with you erasing Queen Rulettes story to keep the villainess from erasing all the other stories in Astorya.
After all, she did erase one of your closest friends Manteau, a stoat who speaks some of his phrases in French.
Now that Prince S. and the gang are all ok, the group realizes that the original Original story needs to be protected, Two problems arise. There is a big erasure section where no one can safely enter andwhere can you safely hide the original Original

The first problem is solved when you write over the erased section and draw Castle Doodling, which becomes a new home for all those doodles that are done on the edge of the pages.
You know hangman, hearts, tic tac toe, peace signs all done at the other side of the Red Line on a piece of paper.
To say they are overjoyed with their own home is an understatement,

The second problem is solved when they decide the best place to store the Original is on the Other Side of the paper.
The side that is completely dark and apparently full of monsters and villains, The question then becomes how to get there, Prince S. tells everyone that he has this one under control because he solved this years before when he proved that the world was not round, but instead flat.
He knows the way and guides, as best as his forgetful memory can, the gang to the other side,

The book, like the previous one, provides lots of opportunities to engage the reader, For example, there is a fillinthe blank section for the monster disguise you will be wearing when you go to the Other Side, plus a place where you can actually draw what your monster will look like.
In another chapter is a word puzzle of sorts of how to navigate the secret path and cross from one side of the page to the other.
To be honest, I still havent quite figured this puzzle out, but it has been fun to try,

I am still surprised at how much the authors are able to write a story that actively happens to you, the reader.
There is a section later in the book that is very creative and yet to hard to describe, You are faced with a dilemma regarding evil Prince S, and the S. Word and you are given a sort of what if type scenario: If You Fight and If You Refuse to Fight.
The If You Fight titled pages are on the even numbered side, but the page is black with white text.
While the If You Refuse to Fight section is on the oddnumbered side, which are also your typicallooking pages, white with black text.
One of these two stories eventually end, but the other then begins to switch back and forth for a little bit between black/white text and white/black text.
Its all very entertaining and inventive,

Overall, this is another enjoyable book in the series, My readingnephew really likes these books and loves all the many footnotes the authors provide and thinks they are funny.
Laugh out loud funny. But, what surprised me was how interested he was in knowing all the French phrases Manteau uses and would go to the end of the book to look them up.

Rating:stars
