on Emily

loved this book as a teen, Clean historical romance novels. This was one of my absolute favorites in the series, And, no that's not how my daughter got her name, Nostalgia read: This Sunfire series is written by many authors, all the books are about a heroine throughout history and the two men that pursue her, Emily is a rich young girl who is bored with her meaningless experience, When she meets Stephen, a doctor in training, she decides that she also wants to be a nurse, She defies her family to work at the hospital as an aide and to try to break down the prejudices of Stephen, Emily has some character growth in the book which is sometimes lacking in the other books, Though her initial change happens because of a boy, it becomes real as the book progresses, I think I read most of the Sunfire romances as a young teen, They aren't anything special or deep, but they're fun and age appropriate, I remember this being one of my favorites, : I am rating this book five because my sister and I are spending New Year's Eve reading aloud the descriptions of romance novels in dramatic voices, This one is a winner, I read this in high school, It was all my romantic dreams come true, stars, mostly for the nostalgia A clean, period romance for a teenage girl, Predictable and a bit melodramatic, but good message about fighting for individuality and what's really important, I think Emily was a rich girl, Doesn't the drawing of her on the cover make her look rich

I wish I could actually remember something about the individual plots of these books, One of my favorite Sunfires, Some suspension of disbelief required, though, Exactly the book I've read years ago,
the first novel i read, . this is great I love goodreads

Emily, I missed you so much!
I like Stephen for you I originally read this series back in thes, checking them out from my elementary school library.
Having reread them as an adult I think they stand the test of time and are still relevant as far as historical fiction is concerned, My favorite of the Sunfire series, . . I devoured these books as a kid, This turn of the century Sunfire romance is the only one I genuinely remember disliking as a kid, The rich girl going against her parents to work with the brusque doctor as a nurse in the local hospital never felt as exciting as some of the other plots Amanda amp Cassie were some of my favorites.
And not gonna lie, something about there being art

sculptures in her family's sitting room made out of the hair of relatives was a bit weird, I know I finished this book and she ended up with the doctor, but bleh!! I didn't like the romance in this book and felt like she would have been better off single in the end.
My book club is experimenting with reading books we loved when we were younger to see if they're actually good, so I using the opportunity to revisit my beloved Sunfire romances.
This was one of my favorites, and a lot of what I loved about it still holds up, There's lots of fun period detail and a heroine who questions limitations, And, given how spunky most Sunfire heroines are from the start, having a heroine who is almost paralyzed by depression is an interesting change that I suspect my not particularly spunky teenage self appreciated.
The love story was never my favorite part of this one, and it seems even weaker now, when the couple is declaring lifelong love after what amounts to maybe a dozen conversations, most of them unpleasant.
And Emily's introspection, while realistic for her age and situation, is more tedious reading for my adult self mostly because it hits the same notes again and again in more detail than necessary.
And the resolution is pretty unconvincing, but that's never what I liked about this book, Sweet business Stephen is described as a lone wolf, The perfect descriptor for any heartthrob, And a doctor at that,

Gotta say the ending in this one was a bit unsatisfying, But I guess I like a little nuance, Totally didn't buy that one conversation with em's ma and pa was going to turn out so well for our poor hero, Another book that I just ate up as a preteen, I've always liked turn of the century in the big city settings and this one had a great character arc and got into the some social issues with rich and poor that I found compelling.
Just a fun story and easy read, Born to enormous wealth, she longed for something that money couldn't buy, She could have anything in the world she wanted but the one she loved,

At the turn of the century, Emily Blackburn is a wealthy New York society girl who has everything a girl could dream of, She wears the latest Parisian fashions, and is escorted to parties by the adoring and rich Worthington Bates, But amid the social whirl she feels empty and restless, When she meets the handsome Dr, Stephen Reed, she defies her parents and volunteers at the public hospital where he works, Helping there fills her life with new meaning, and Stephen stirs her heart with love, But he only sees her as a spoiled rich girl, Emily must prove that she isnt useless and cares about others, most of all, about him, I really want to give this threeandahalf, but I can't figure out how to do that here, ha,

My "youth romances" growing up were Janette Okes and other things you could find in the local Logos Bookstore, I can't lie, I really enjoyed them even though they were not Grate Literchur, If I had been allowed to read secular youth romances, these would have been right up my alley, Historical fiction with nice predictable plots and generally tame but warmhearted Life Lessons, These seem to be like comfort food, not highquality comfort food, more like those mashed potatoes that come in a box,

I mean, I am getting that all from this one book, but since this is the eleventh in the Sunfire series, I'm pretty sure it's got the standard formula down.

Emily is a snotty turnofthethcentury brat who decides she is bored with her life and she wants to DO SOMETHING, so she does, Her parents do not approve, of course, While rebelling, she falls in love with a boy who is totally Wrong For Her, Of course. For the rest of the book, she is at war with her parents and her HORRIBLY UNHELPFUL EMOTIONS, There's also a fake love triangle thrown in there, and an irredeemable cousin whom I wanted to smack probably a dozen times, Oh, also, the cover art SUCKS and reminds me of those little figures that come with cheap Christmas Village sets,

Needless to say, I will be seeking out more Sunfires, I loved this book as a kid and suddenly felt an urge to reread it at age, I think it holds up well as a fairly straightforward look at life in turnofthecentury NYC, including the huge chasm between the opulently wealthy and the desperately poor, The Emily's not overly deep, and the ending maybe isn't very realistic, but it's still an enjoyable YA historical novel, I think it can be a helpful way for teens to learn a bit about life among the super wealthy in, including the highly restricted lives they led, I discovered the Sunfire Classics back in middle school working in the library and with them discovered the joys of romance novels!

And yet, I only loved a select few of these books.

Emily is my all time favorite of all the girls that I encountered, I think part of that is because she rebells against her parents to do what she wants to do something that was close to my heart in my teenage age! but also because what she wants to do is help people via nursing.

The man that she falls for is a doctor, but he thinks that she is spoiled and wealthy and doesn't understand what it is to come from his background.
But Emily keeps trying, and in the meantime her parents manage to convey their disapproval upon her as well, By this time Emily is about ready to give up, but her persistence and idea of right and wrong see her through to her happily ever after,

And if I ever find a copy of this book I am so buying it!! Did anyone else read these Sunfire romance novels I tore through them as a young reader and never forgot how much I enjoyed them.
Recently, I spotted a stack of them in my childhood closet at my parents' house and grabbed one at random, I was pleasantly surprised by the plot and the pacing, It wasn't superficial and tackled issues of healthcare equity at the turn of the century, . . along with the enemiestolovers romance, I'm not at all shocked I loved theseyears ago, Next time I'm at my parents' I'm going to grab the rest of the stack and read through them all, too! I read this book in jr high and absolutely loved it! It's an etremely tame romance set ina rich girl wants to be a nurse sigh but her family doesn't approve.
I read it again a few years ago, and although it was silly, I still loved it! This was my secondfavorite book in this series growing up, and I am not really sure why! Poor Emily, she's rich and bored.
She has to go to fancy dress parties, and go shopping, and nobody even really objects when her favorite thing to do is fill her head with silly poetry, But all that bores her to tears, She cannot even figure out the inner workings of the kitchen in herth Avenue mansion when she gets the munchies in the middle of the night, How dreadful! Oh, to be in charge of your own density!

Girl, I have worked for a living and it ain't all that,

Her parents are unbelievably neglectful, in the way that gives one pause to say "so actually what I'm reading here is SCIENCE FICTION, " But instead of aliens showing up to infect everyone with viruses and blow stuff up, Emily's life is thrown into chaos when she meets young, brooding medical student Stephen, Who is kind of a jerk and, . . no, wait, this guy is a flat out Jerky McJerkerson, A real ahole with a chip on his shoulder, Wow Em, you really know how to pick 'em,

Can Emily convince the pod people that she should be allowed to study nursing and save lives Will Jerky ever get over himself and admit Emily is the one for him, only to realize in ten years that he was mad to marry a girl who doesn't have a clue how to cook Will time travelers show up and get Emily some Prozac already

WHY I GIVE THIS THREE STARS: I don't know.
Nostalgia, I guess. I cannot bring myself to give it less than that, Emily is really airheaded but in typical Ransom heroine gusto, she sets her mind to something and refuses to give up, no matter how ridiculous the prospects are or how demeaning the path is.
Like all Sunfires, the historical aspect is related in a very entertaining way especially for the frequently overlooked Gibson Girl era, OMG CARS! IT IS SCIENCE FICTION! The third person in the triangle, Emily's childhood friend Worth, is a decent bloke and a surprising voice of reason in this whole debacle.

And, on page, there is flouncing, There just ain't enough flouncing in literchure today, That's a whole star right there! This is very wellwritten story with a wellcrafted heroine, Stephen could have been fleshed out more he just seemed like a jerk for most of the book, The historical details that made this a turnofthecentury time period were interesting without being overbearing, Very enjoyable read. Full recap sitelink wordpress . A cute quick read with a few chapters of OMG Blah boring self absorbed woman problems, By the end of the story the main character is humbled and accomplishes her goals and I really liked that, Another one that I remember loving as a preteen/young teen, Loved the mix of history and romance, This one really hit the spot! I was looking for fluff, and a nice, clean romance, I was thoroughly entertained!
