Gather Come And Be Killed Author Shelley Smith Expressed As Volume
Brown is a burden to herself and to her actresssister, Phoebe, After Florence's one pitiful attempt at suicide, Phoebe persuades her to go to the nursing home in the country, But Florence does not trust her sister and runs off, straight into the arms of Mrs, Jolly, who offeres her a refuge, What happens then provides a spinetingling tale of suspense and murder, Book received from NetGalley.
I didn't care for this book that much, It takes some weird twists and turns and I'm not a huge fan of suicide either attempted or accomplished as a plot device.
Especially when it's for the reasons given in this book, I have read another book by this author and liked but not loved it, So I'm not sure if it was only that particular plot device that I disliked or if the author just isn't for me.
This author had a most original way of telling her mystery tales, The early part depicts the depths of depression faced by the vulnerable sister, whilst her actress sibling is too wrapped up in her own life and career to help her.
The second part involves the efforts of the actress to make up for her earlier selfishness, Spanning the story as a whole is the intriguing character of Mrs Jolly, These novels are well worth seeking out, every one is different, Published in, has dated well, making a good read, A decent, really quick read,
It has the feel of a made for tv midday movie you know where it is going and follow the inexorable lead onward compulsively to the Hollywood type end.
A pulpy, quick pace is set, focusing directly on the protagonists as they relate to the crime, The characters were well enough drawn, Smith has writing chops. With more time spent on settingat the expense of speed it would have had more fibre,
The only thing that gave me pause were a couple of clues that were oh so conveniently fallen on, Phoebe happens to find the key to the house Florence was in in the grass and gets to look around inside it.
Then she walks down a side street and spies her sister's brooch in a pawn shop, Also it just so happens that the local police officer was questioning the grocer about something else and found the delivery boy able to report seeing the Florence.
And it seemed a bit incongruous in the midst of hot pursuit of the criminal for the inspector to start talking about his attraction to Phoebe.
Some kind of flirtation I guess took up between the two that continued to the crime busting denouement, emphasising the movie vibe.
I wonder if the
predominant sociosexual script of thes was man chasing and woman demurring but going along with the chase until they finally unite.
. I read Vanish in an Instant set in the USA at the same time and there seemed to be something similar going on.
I may check out more of Smith's books when I want a quick, undemanding read, Nancy Hermione Courlander Bodington.
