been looking for a book like this for a long time,
I particularly like the discussions of functional anatomy and how environments shape anatomical evolution/variation, I would have liked a lot more, but at some point the book would become a tome or effectively a set of encyclopedias, Unfortunately there was also no bibliography or "suggested reading" list for further discussions of anatomy/functional anatomy,
My interests are on the writing side, so I can't really
comment how useful this would be for graphic artists, The book does go through several design examples, though, suggesting how to refine concepts and what does/does not work from a functional design perspective,
Not a "onebook solution", but a really good resource all the same,
Very detailed, instead of just teaching you about different types of animal anatomy it makes you think about your creature habitat, feeding, predators, mating rituals, social behavior, locomotion.
. . and gives you examples of the features related to each choice, As the title suggests, it's about the fundamentals of creature design, so there are a few subjects that I would have liked to learn more about, but luckily Google is a thing.
This doesn't take away from the Fundamentals of Creature Design's clear structure and comprehensibility at all, though,
Even though I've already learned some of the lessons in this book by myself you can't get around that as a zoology nerd, it was still really good to see that I'm on the right way and receive tips from actual industry professionals.
The only "negative" that I see is that there are a few designs that go against the rules in this very book and wouldn't be able to move or live altogether, which can be explained with the mass of different artists/authors.
Some of them clearly are more experienced and skilled than others,
Finally, the fact that they plant a tree for every sold book to get closer to carbon neutrality is a little bonus I appreciate a lot, .
