A science fiction classic from a master of the genre,

When AIVAS the Artificial Intelligence Voice Address System was first discovered at Landing, the entire planet of Pern was awed at the knowledge it divulged.

All the history of the people of Pern was there, Dragonholders, Lord Holders and Craftmasters crowded into the tiny inner room to learn the secrets of their beginnings, Ana AIVAS had other gifts to offer stored information of old crafts that had been forgotten, of medicine, music and technology,

But the greatest promise AIVAS offered was the chance to rid Pern of Thread forever, All the great ones of Pern began the long and arduous task of learning just how to operate the incredible plan,

This was a plan of such daring and epic proportions that both dragons and riders would be put at risk This review is for the CD audiobook version only.
I've been a fan of the Pern series going way back, and I've read the books a number of times, I thought it would be nice to have the CD version for long car trips, Unfortunately, the audiobook version is terrible, entirely due to the guy reading it, I have no idea who he is, but the is virtually unlistenable, He reads with a slow, dull cadence as if he were reading the book for preschoolers, Imagine Mr. Rogers reading it and it will give you some idea, Worse, he insists on doing 'voices' for the characters, Every Weyrleader has some inexplicable southern accent, while all the female characters have a bizarre falsetto, The worst is Robinton, who speaks so slooowly and with such drawn out spacing for the words that even Alan Rickman would tell him to get on with it.
Seriously, he sounds like Goliath from the old Davey and Goliath claymation series, Well Iii doon't knooow daaveeey, . I had intended to get the audio version of the rest of the series, over time, But too many are read by this same guy, and while ayear old might enjoy it, anyone older than that is going to want to shred this CD after the first half hour of listening to this guy fight his was through the simplest sentences.
Imagine the worst actor you have ever seen chewing the scenery like Jaws while simultaneously dozing off,
I have to say too that it's gotten harder to suspend disbelief when it comes to the story itself, Having set up the world of Pern over so many previous books, once Aivas gets involved, the story jumps along in ways that don't make much sense, and the character of Aivas makes even less.
A computer that formulates a plan but won't tell anyone what it is A computer that at times is just a machine and at others seems to have some kind of emotional awareness That spouts bible passages to a society with no organized religion and calls the bible the greatest book ever written The entire CD is just painful.
Fourth in reading order, events continue from The White Dragon third, A lot of confusing prequels written and published out of sequence, The writing quality is on the decline, filled with petty feel good dialogue and redundancies, But worth reading for the overall story, I stopped reading these books back inwhen they just became too dull, but thanks to special offers on Kindle am now catching upyears later.
Such an awesome conclusion to this specific storyline, Ive read this book as well as all of the others countless times over again since I was first gifted a copy of Dragonflightyears ago.
This particular book tells the epic story of all the weyrs coming together to destroy their ancient enemy, So much happens in this book including learning some of the ancient history of pern and the dragons, along with the ongoing fight against threadfall.
If youve read Dragonflight, Dragonquest and the White Dragon, this is a must read, It picks up right where the White Dragon leaves off, Two thumbs up for this book, as well as all of the dragon rider novels! A very interesting conclusion to a well written series of stories.
It certainly captures the imagination and leaves a positive emotion, The Dragonriders of Pern are some of my very favorite stories, Anne McCaffrey not Todd has built such a wonderful world that when you finish the series you feel like so many of these people are your friends, and you just know Pern really exists out there, just waiting for us to re discover it.
I love All the Weyrs of Pern because it ties the current population to their ancestors after they discover AIVIS, a voice activated computer system that holds a lot of their history, and a possible way out of the dilemma that they have faced all their lives.
I would recommend starting with the first three books first, so that you have a foundation for the story, Once you start, it is hard to put any of them down, The story is wonderful. I think fans of Anne McCaffrey already know that, However, the conversion from print to digital leaves something to be desired, As I was reading, due to instances of missing text, I had to pull out mymass market paperback edition to check what I was reading because I was left scratching my head and going WTF So I'm writing this review in order to document the missing text for those who don't have a print edition to compare to the digital edition.
I hope you find it useful, Missing text is shown in brackets,
