Find The Smell Of The Night (The Inspector Montalbano Mysteries Book 6) (English Edition) EBook : Camilleri, Andrea, Sartarelli, Stephen Assembled By Andrea Camilleri Distributed As Interactive EBook
Camilleri, it's Montalbano, it's great another enjoyable, easy read, The Montalbano character just gets better and better and extreme and complex, this time going down the Basil Fawlty path and doing some nasty vandalism and brutally and violently savaging a sweater.
Two of the best things about S, Camilleri and his writings are, first, that he does not take himself seriously at all here we have, referring to Montalbano: As he was contemplating this string of coincidences of the sort that one finds both in second rate detective novels and in the tritest everyday reality.
and, second, that he comes across as thoroughly enjoying every moment of what he is doing, Strangely, for me, the plot is not that important, I just enjoy the reading, In this book Montalbanos character is developed, There are some thoughts on ageing and some self awareness, He admits he is a jerk at times to Mimi, and reveals some insecurity to Livia, There is a great scene where Montalbano is explaining the case to Mimi and Fazio, and they seem like a very believable team.
Michela Managanaro is a vivid character, However, the conclusion of the case is really just Montalbanos interpretation, without any real evidence to support that interpretation.
I found the premonitions and the parallel with the Faulkner book didnt really fit with the rest of the book.
There is a sentence in this book which hints at the book going off in a new direction “as in all novels, as the story hes written, events sometimes go their own way, leading to unforeseen conclusions.
” Equally readable as a stand alone or part of the series, Unusually, the crime involves a Ponzi scheme but all that detecting stuff is not essential to savouring these novels.
Montalbano is kicking fifty, increasingly aware of his physical shortcomings, He spends time philosophising in his secret Sicilian places and rowing on the telephone with Livia who is AWOL in this novel.
Whislt he still has his usual team of subordinates to play with, his boss is lining him up in his sights for dismissal.
If all else fails, go and stuff your face with the local cuisine lovingly descibed by Mr Camilleri.
How come Montalbano isn't twenty stoneHighly enjoyable read with a rather dark Hitchcockian twist, I love the simplicity of the earlier Montalbano novels, There is a single plot line here whereas in later books, almost without fail, there are parallel plots that do ultimately coincide but not always cleanly.
The story here concerns a missing financier and pyramid selling schemes, Italy has of course long been renowned for shady dealings when it comes to banking and moving money and Camilleri plays well on that here.
Montalbanos on off girlfriend Livia does feature but at a distance, Although some of the dialogue is away with the fairies, there are other passages that capture a moment in time perfectly.
Another thing
that Camilleri does well is creating passing characters that turn out to play a pivotal role in proceedings.
They may only feature for one chapter but they are always larger than life and add a sparkle to the story.
I enjoyed rediscovering this tale, Voice of the violin next I think, Another Montalbano that you can't put down not because the action is tense and gripping but because the story is so enjoyable.
Reading these novels makes you want to spend time in Sicily, and makes you hope that you never fall into the clutches of the law.
Montalbano "follows the money" in his own way, and in his own time, When he's following a hunch, nothing is going to stop him, unless it's time to eat, He surely must be one or two kilos, or tonnes, above his ideal weight but it doesn't seem to slow him down.
In this novel, he's not supposed to be on the case but that doesn't stop him or his team.
Outside the station, his affair with Livia moves into a different state and there are times when you wonder if, or fear that, there's going to be a new woman in his life.
There are a couple of new characters, beautifully drawn, and let's hope we see of the lovely Ms Manganero.
One complaint. On the Kindle Fire there are and examples of "typos" created, presumably, by the conversion from print to e book.
