Collect Four Gothic Novels: The Castle Of Otranto; Vathek; The Monk; Frankenstein (Oxford Worlds Classics (Paperback)) Prepared By Horace Walpole, William Beckford, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley Issued As Textbook
for Christmas present but quality appeared good Heavy going Admittedly I only paid, inc pp but it was advertised as 'good' and it wasn't, The cover was torn and there was some mold inside, I think 'poor' would have been a better description, If I had seen this in a book shop I would not have considered it, Brilliant resource. Good condition and quality of service, I would highly recommend this book, Great for my pupils. Good job!! I purchased this book because I had already read all four novels at university and found this book so handy having four fantastic Gothic stories in one.
I'm completely besotted with Gothic novels and The Monk was the only one out of the four that I had started but hadn't While this is a helpful collection, It would be most useful to someone with a well developed interest in Gothic rather than a beginner.
This book is an excellent collection of the beginnigs of gothic literature, and it's good value! I was thrilled at finding this four in one book while originally searching for The Monk as our reading circle is going through the very beginnings of gothic literature and Looked forward to getting these.
However even with glasses I cant read the print! Its very small I dont need to wear glasses for everything either Macabre and melodramatic, set in haunted castles or fantastic landscapes, Gothic tales became fashionable in the late eighteenth century with the publication of Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto.
Crammed with catastrophe, terror, and ghostly interventions, the novel was an
immediate success, and influenced numberous followers.
These include William Beckford's Vathek, which alternates grotesque comedy with scenes of exotic magnificence in the story of the ruthless Caliph Vathek's journey to damnation.
The Monk, by Matthew Lewis, is a violent tale of
ambition, murder, and incest, set in the sinister monastery of the Capuchins in Madrid.
Frankenstein,is Mary Shelley's disturbing and perennially popular tale of a young student who learns the secret of giving life to a creature made from human relics, with horrific consequences.
This collection illustrates
the range and attraction of the gothic novel, Extreme and sensational, each of the four printed here is alos a powerful psychological story of isolation and monomania.
