Procure Istanbul: A Tale Of Three Cities Engineered By By Bettany Hughes Rendered As Print
Hughes does give us here quite an interesting read, and she has obviously taken in a lot of research in writing this, but at times this does get a bit bogged down with too much detail on minor elements.
The main reason I purchased this was to have a biography of Bravo Bethany Hughes, As I strolled around the streets of Istanbul, this book brought the forgotten corners to life, such as the remnants of the Serpent Column, a reminder of the forgotten Spartan days of the city of Byzantion.
Equally unmentioned in most I simply love Bettany Hughes writing, I have her book on Socrates excellent, by the way and Ive also enjoyed her programs on various thinkers eg, Nietzsche, the Buddha and this book is just an added bonus for me.
Ive only just started reading Istanbul: A Tale of Reading a book of this length, laden with such detailed factual narrative was initially a daunting prospect, I couldnt put it down after the first page, It is beautifully written and this book is a must for anyone
interested in Ancient History, Classics, Politics, A very good read, Interesting and well written history of the various periods of the city's history, Found it skips a bit in places, so I had to fill in the gaps with some internet search, Maybe its good that it inspired me to do so, Anyway a lot of history to fit in, Good, clear, and easily readable overview of cyears history of this ever changing City, The book communicates the author's enthusiasm for her subject and makes some engaging parallels between past and present, Short chapters work well, conveying enough to encourage Bettany Hughes brings alive this fascinating city, I read it while visiting Istanbul and it really enhanced my holiday, It is a biased work, Chapter: " There is a possibility that Lydia was invented by Luke" Might this be a deduction by Sherlock Holmes Chapter: "The Berber author Lactantius a Christian, so not an unbiased source describes" better have a pin ch of salt handy in Please Read Notes: Brand New, International Softcover Edition, Printed in black and white pages, minor self wear on the cover or pages, Sale restriction may be printed on the book, but Book name, contents, and author are exactly same as Hardcover Edition.
