bon MARTY APPEL WRITES A VERY GOOD STORY ABOUT ONE OF THE YANKEE LEGENDS, . GREAT BOOK ABOUT A SADLY MISSED MAN, AAA PLUS. Before Jeter there was Mattingly and before Mattingly there was Munson, This is a simple but universal truth for any Yankee fan my age but I have to say up until now I knew from very little to none about Thurman, a far, far, far from perfect figure.
Perhaps this was owed to how recent the information age is, Tbirty years ago all you had were the newspaper stories of which you only got to read a few.
Does one end up dissappointed after learning from him Actually no, he obviously came from an extremely difficult family to say the least, was rather envious of others and had an extreme love for the material and showy things.
That said, the family he did create, the one he had any control about owning, that one spoke volumes about him and I guess they still do until this day.
Is this an enjoyable book Sort of, as much as any book that goes into this much detail about somebodys death and funeral like the title says.
But hey, these are things Ive been wondering about for decades and I appreciate now having a clear idea of what happened on that faithful day thanyears ago which I only learned the following morning while opening the sports section of my local paper and which remains one of the very few this cant possibly be true stories Ive ever read.
Hard to believe that after reading a book about somebody so flawed, hes probably still my one favorite player of all time.
I love the hard cover and the pictures and history was great Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee

CaptainI loved the book.
As a Yankee fan since thes you will get the inside accounts of the events that shaped Yankee history.
It also has personal meaning since my younger brother was in the Army with Thurman at Ft, Dix, NJ. Here is part of a letter I sent to Mr, Appel, the Author. My younger brother was drafted in the lates, a bad time for him because he just got married.
He was a young soldier at Ft, Dix in the same Company as Thurman, They were both clerks and became good friends, They played softball and my brother was having a hard time as his new wife was difficult maybe so her family.
I guess Thurman took him under his wing and since neither had a lot to do, they would play catch.
My brother said Thurman often complained, Cant you throw any harder They both had to type out the weekend passes clerks job and my brother could type, so as a favor, he typed all of Thurmans passes too.
Thurmy as my brother called him would leave Ft, Dix and travel up the NJ turnpike on his pass to go to Yankee stadium to practice or go upstate NY to play on the farm team.
He used to drop my brother off in Milltown off exitfrom his Buick Riviera and continue back on the turnpike.
I could not put the book down and suspect any Yankee fan that loved Thurman will get heart felt satisfaction reading the book.
