I'm mainly a software / systems engineer but also have some sysadmin responsibilities, Some of the material I have picked up previously along the way, I didn't think I could learn anything after two decades as a developer working closely with a lot of networking techI was wrong! And I was wrong again and again.
There's a lot of interesting stuff to find here, I would absolutely buy another Lucas book, and I will, I loved this book! I really learn best when I can try things and not just read about them so having working examples was very helpful as I read through each section.
I don't even know how many times I said, Whoa, that's cool! I also had no idea I could find out so I've worked as a sys admin on and off for close toyears.
This was a great book I'd recommend it for people new to the job, but also for people like me as a review and refresher, Lucas continues to produce great reference materials,
Stop waiting for the network team!If basic TCP/IP was hard, network administrators couldnt do it, Servers give sysadmins a incredible visibility into the networkonce they know how to unlock it, Most sysadmins dont need to understand window scaling, or the differences between IPvand IPvecho requests, or other intricacies of the TCP/IP protocols, You need only enough to deploy your own applications and get easy support from the network team, This book teaches you:How modern networks really workThe essentials of TCP/IPThe next generation protocol, IPvThe right tools to diagnose network problems, and how to use themTroubleshooting everything from the physical wire to DNSHow to see the traffic you send and receiveConnectivity testingHow to communicate with your network team to quickly resolve problemsA systems administrator doesnt need to know the innards of TCP/IP, but knowing enough to diagnose your own network issues transforms a good sysadmin into a great one.

Michael Lucas is probably the best system administration author Ive read, I am amazed that he can communicate top notch content with a sense of humor, while not offending the reader or sounding stupid, When was the last time you could physically feel yourself getting smarter while reading a book Richard Bejtlich, TaoSecurity
For me, reading this book was like having one of the guys in my company who lives and breathes Cisco sitting down with me for a day and explaining everything I need to know to handle problems or issues likely to come my way.
There may be many additional things I could potentially learn about my Cisco switches, but likely few Im likely
to encounter in my environment, IT World
