entertaining read. Whit and personal thoughts are compelling, I don't often write a negative review, but this book truly deserves it, I would not recommend this book, It is an overly footnooted vanity piece, Evidently, some decades ago he published "Just a Geek," which was a story of mostly his struggles as an actor after leaving Star Trek: the Next Generation, He complains that people called this whiny, but it is, He has gone back and excessively footnoted this book, which makes up half of this book, It was an embarrassment to read, Rather than annotate it many times a page in most cases to show how he has matured, he should have just let it sink into well deserved oblivion, I watched St:NG when it was new, I didn't care for his character on the show, That wasn't his fault, it was the writers, I did enjoy his appearances on Big Bang Theory, playing a fictionalized version of himself, He served as nemesis to Sheldon, one of the main characters, I also like his narrations on John Scalzi's audio books, He's a good voice actor, I don't think he's a good writer, I can't imagine why they published this, Many of the annotations are repetitious exchanges with his editor who objects to Wheaton's constant use of the word, "cool, "If you do read this, I would recommend skipping the whole "Just a Geek" and starting in the second part with the essay about his wife's medical emergency, Even the later sections have far too many unnecessary footnotes, They became really, really annoying, disrupting the text and making it feel choppier than necessary, I finally stopped reading the footnotes and it was a much smoother read, I would also skip the speeches, which cover things he had spoken of previously, And the appendices which are also embarrassing, I would like my money back, Don't waste yours. Just a Geek made me a Wil Wheaton fan many years ago, I loved his candor and honesty in describing his journey, Still Just a Geek shows us that Wil was far from done, He looks back on hisyear old book and and shows us how much he has matured in the meantime, He looks back on some of the things he wroteyears ago and winces, Then he owns the mistakes and tells us WHY they were mistakes and what we can learn from them, This is how a white cisgender American male takes responsibility for past ignorance and helps us all to grow, As a fellow white cisgendered American male, I am really glad to see this, Wil and I have had to learn how to look at the world through other's viewpoints, It hasn't been easy, and we still have a ways to go, I used to describe Wil as 'that guy from Next Generationthe angsty teen, " From now on, I will describe him as 'that New York Times best selling author, " I pre ordered it on Kindle, and before I finished it, I bought a hard copy so I have one available to loan, FIrst off, TNG was a bit twee it was well meaning and so on, but the perfection rang a little false, DSdid a much better job, And the heart of twee ness was goldenboy Wesley how does that even work a kid flying a billion dollar spaceshipBut and its an important but there is Stand by me.
Which has two of the best young actors of their generation in it, And, it turns out that unlike Wesley, Wil isn't a ridiculous child prodigy, he's pretty talented, but he's no Mozart, Which means he struggles. Not in stand by me, where a peer group and a great director are there, and which is probablymonths long, But in TNG, which is full on, and he's the only kid, and working with a cast who are way beyond his experience I mean, Patrick Stewart was in I Claudius when Wil was maybeHe's bright and self aware, and also has mental health issues.
Whihc makes this fascinating, and a bit inspiring, because its saying which I think is even important after the last two years that its OK, not to be OK.
Its

also a rejection of the capitalist treadmill if he'd buckled down, played the system he'd be way richer in cash than he is, But he values himself than that, and we all should, What a great way to see the growth of Wil Wheaton I liked him in TNG but started following him after Tabletop ! This book helps to uncover and understand Wil as a person ! Its a great read ! Recommend!
