was our required home reading report back when I was inst year high school, It was sooooo boring for me, There were so many talks about politics and feuds, I only read the love story parts of Isang and Bettu I think that's his name, The most memorable scene for me was when Isang asked Bettu to wear only Gstring in front of the whole clan as her final wish before they get married.
It was so funny.
But I remember skipping most part of this book, especially towards the end when new era was approaching, I felt depressed at that point because Isang died, Bettu's political influences were not as strong as before, . .
I believe that none of my classmates really finished this book, . . not without skipping some parts, Our batch kept on complaining that this reading was too much for our brain capacity then hahaha, so I think the English Department changed the reading list for the succeeding batches and that was unfair to us! hahaha :D.
First of all, this book was the perfect introduction to local Filipino works for me, It wasn't heavy on facts but alluded to it just enough for me to connect it to what was taught in school.
Second, I was amazed at how I could relate to the experiences of the characters in the book even though our timelines and experiences were different.
Also, as I read this historical fiction, history felt more tangible and more genuine for me,
Thanks to this book, I now look forward to discovering more of similar works,
Let me leave a quote here from Mr, Hilarion Alcantara in the book: "We must constantly remind ourselves of the ancient admonition that to preserve our freedom the necessary price is unrelenting vigilance".
A historical novel which gives an insight about the life and
spiritual tradition of the Filipino people amid the PhilippineAmerican War in.
gfgfjgjngn I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, I was not expecting much when I picked it up and thought nothing of it and that made me enjoy it, The theme is about freedom and at first I didnt like the flashbacks but I found the structure enjoyable, It gives more depth to the life of the Alcantaras during the Spanish and American era, While reading, sometimes I'll pause at a sentence or a passage and reread it over and over again, not knowing if it's because of the beauty of the words or of its truthfulness and poignancy.
Great historical fiction has that effect on me,
What I like most about this book is that it holds the principles and convictions of a realistic man in a time of war.
The characterizations of Bettu, Luisa and Hilario are that of real people flawed but honest, I've read many books based on history wars, specifically and I've noticed that they have several similar themes integrity, family honor,
justice, etc.
But what sets this book apart from the others is that it does not only dwell on the abstract or the morals or the lessons learned from war.
It has the charms of Sierra Madre, cicadas, sherry at the veranda, among others, and they make everything that happened all too familiar, like a past that haunts you in the night.
To be free, as the title says, is a concept that I want to understand, What does it truly mean We still feel the shackles of servitude the scars of our country's past are still here, Our pursuit to be wholly free is still in progress or maybe not, I hope I will live up to the day every Filipino can feel freedom,
