on Keely and Du

play made me cry and gave me shivers, Very disturbing play. Pretty good, but as a prochoice voter, the ending annoys me, Such an interesting concept told in a realistic, readable way, I remember buying this at sitelinkShakespeare amp Co, something likeyears ago, and there was a kitty cat lying under the ladder downstairs with me in the drama section.

I can't remember how I heard of the play, but I understand why I was drawn to it, I used to think the best were "issue" dramas, "concept" plays, and this is one for sure: a woman is kidnapped by "Operation Retrieval" from a clinic before her abortion procedure, and confined for months to prevent her from going back.

I think I waited so long to read it, though, because some ideas lose everything the minute you put a lot of words to them.
How could this idea be sustained for a play How could it possibly end But it gained some traction and the longer scenes occasionally blossomed.
The scene on Keely's birthday was very kind, In the end,

it did manage to surprise me,

The coat hanger was good, On the one hand, Keely and Du remains, if anything, more depressingly relevant today than it was when first performed twenty years ago.
On the other hand, its overthetop politically preachy, And preachy can work, but it needs to be balanced with a strong plot and characters,

Overlal, Keely and Du is too much message and too little story, which is a shame, The plays got a pretty intriguing idea behind it,

After being raped by her exhusband, Keely wakes up chained to a bed in a basement, A prolife group kidnapped her to prevent her from getting an abortion, planning to hold her until shortly before shes due to give birth.
Her warden is Du, an older woman and fanatical antichoice supporter,

The concept is terrifying: being held against ones will by a group of zealots is the stuff of nightmares.
And given some of the lengths antichoice groups will go to prevent abortions combined with their treatment of pregnant women as nonentities the concept doesnt feel nearly as ridiculous and unrealistic as it should.

But the plays overlyloud drumbeat regarding abortion rights gives the whole play the feeling of a strident lecture, The people most likely to see the play likely already agree with the playwright, which begs the question: what, exactly, is the point of such an overlypolitical play if it simply preaches to the choir

While reading, I kept thinking Ms.
Martin would have been well served by borrowing from some classic science fiction the highbrow stuff namely, taking modern issues and putting them into a different situation to examine them without the baggage.
Yes, abortion is unique, but I think the play could have had a stronger punch and attracted a wider audience if it had focused on the story and the underlying message rather than the issue.
QuasirecommendedSpoiler alert: Walter gets away, And that really irritates me, I wish the plot of this play were farfetched, but it's really not, It makes me sad that people can be so devoid of empathy, Jane Martin is the pen name of a playwright speculated to be former Actors Theatre of Louisville artistic director Jon Jory.
