of the Resistance in this book, but not much more, And it is still unclear well, to a new reader anyway, whether Doom will be an ally or hostile to Lief et al's quest, One of the more intriguing aspect was the introduction of the Ols, which adds another layer of danger and suspicion to the story, Lief, Barda and Jasmine are in more peril than ever as they near the end of their quest, They have attracted the Shadow Lord's attention, and he has sent his minions out to look for them, Some, like the AkBaba are dangerous but obvious, Others are even more dangerous for being sly and subtle, The stakes have been raised, and the end is near, The guardian in this book is also one of my favourites, for sheer creepiness, Plus the environment in which it lives is particularly sinister, NB: I'm reading this alongside the Deltora Book of Monsters which offers additional worldbuilding and backstory to many of the creatures and characters, I particularly liked the Glus' entry as it includes its backstory, with a creepy little rhyme, because as we all know, nothing is creepier than a bit of poetry to describe a monster:Since that sad day, long years have flown,But still, beneath that seething foamWhere Enna sleeps,The seaworm creeps,And spins its webs of bone white stone.
