muss sagen, dass ich anfangs meine Zweifel hatte viele Leute das Buch auch recht schlecht bewerteten und meinten, dass der Teil nicht wirklich von Cody McFadyen war, Diesen Kommentaren kann ich aber nur widersprechen, Zugegeben die ersten Teile der Reihe war ein Stückchen besser aber auch der fünfte Teil lohnt sich sehr, Die Smoky Barret Reihe ist vermutlich die beste ThrillerReihe, die ich gelesen habe und da ist dieser Band ein guter Abschluss,
Ich brauchte etwas, um in die Handlung rein zu kommen, da irgendwie soviel gleichzeitig passierte und ich mich zunächst an die ganzen Charaktere erinnern musste, Aber dann war ich auch gefangen und habe mitgefiebert bis zum Schluss,
Auf jeden Fall eine Leseempfehlung,

Vorweg: das Buch hätte ich so oder so nicht gut gefunden, aber natürlich stößt es einem etwas bitterer auf, wenn man auf besagtes Buch jahrelang gewartet hat.
Nungut. Mit den positiven Dingen anfangen gt Smoky Barrett als Charakter mag ich immer noch und die ersten Kapitel waren sehr spannend, McFadyens Schreibweise ist flüssig und angenehm wie immer, Aber das war's auch schon,

Das Negative:
Ich weiß nicht, ob es nur mich gestört hat, aber diese psychologischen und philosophischen Ausschweifungen haben mir das ganze Buch über den letzten Nerv geraubt.
Ich würde sogar sagen, dass McFadyen selbst einiges in dem Buch versucht hat aufzuarbeiten !, aber möchte mich da auch nicht zu weit aus dem Fenster lehnen, Unterm Strich kann sowas auch interessant sein und funktionieren, hat aber meiner Meinung nach in einem Thriller nicht viel verloren, Denn bei einem Genre, dessen Hauptmerkmal "Spannung" ist, ist auf diese Weise leider ganz schnell die Luft raus,

Spannung erzeugen auf Biegen und Brechen:
Teilweise wurden Dinge sehr kryptisch und mysteriös formuliert, damit man nochKapitel lang die Dinge nicht beim Namen nennen muss.
Kann man natürlich machen, ist aber ungünstig, wenn dadurch die Dialoge plötzlich keinen Sinn mehr ergeben Also niemand würde so mysteriös reden, das Ganze las sich plötzlich sehr lächerlich.


Logik
Also ich musste zwischendurch die alten Bücher rausholen und einiges nachlesen, aber nichtsdestotrotz stimmt die Story von Buchnicht ganz mit der der vorigen Bücher überein.
Auch hat McFadyen einige Schlampigkeitsfehler gemacht Narbe mal links mal rechts, Haare mal weg, mal wieder da, die letztendlich dazu geführt haben, dass ich das Interesse an dem Buch komplett verloren habe.


Da ich Spoiler vermeiden möchte, werde ich auf den Schluss und die Aufklärung gar nicht erst eingehen, Nur so viel:

I'm glad I was not the only one disappointed with this book, It felt like some parts the exciting and interesting parts were written by Cody McFadyen, while others were fillers, soulless manifestos and textbook explanations,

I don't know if there'll be more books on this series, There are plenty of loose ends to bring us at least three more books but it's hard to say, Sometimes an open ending is all we can ask for,

I do hope we get at least one more book, and Smoky Barrett and her team go out in a book truly worth of this series, One that'd leave a mark as strong as the first ones, Ich hatte keine großen Erwartungen an das Buch, da die Bewertungen und Rezensionen nicht gerade gut waren, Dem muss ich leider zustimmen, Die Geschichte war gespickt mit Wiederholungen, da der Autor Bezug zu den vorherigen Bänden nahm aber teilweise so unnötig detailliert, dass ich diese Passagen als Längen empfand.
Der eigentliche Fall interessierte mich sehr, nur leider rückte dieser anfangs sehr in den Hintergrund, da es viel um Smokeys psychische Verfassung ging, Die Auflösung war für einen Reihenabschluss sehr unzureichend und offen, zumal ich den Täter sehr schnell im Visier hatte und es somit nicht überraschend kam,
Also ein eher enttäuschender Abschluss dieser Reihe, Abgebrochen auf Seite!
Der erste Teil war absurd, aber okay, aber der zweite Teil, . . Unerträglich! Den ersten Teil fand ich richtig gut und auch die Nachforschungen und Auflösung des Falles, . . aber irgendwie haben sich für mich die Puzzleteilen nicht so gefügt, dass die Geschehnisse Sinn ergeben, Ich mein, es wurde über Jahre ein wahnsinniger Aufwand betrieben für was jetzt eigentlich genau

Ansonsten konnt ich mit der Smoky aus diesem Buch nicht viel anfangen.
. . Preordered this as soon as I realized the author is still alive and will publish a new book, which is just a few years late after it was first announced.
Word was that he was seriously ill and I expected no more books from him, instead I prepared myself for his death notice,
Not knowing what really happened it may simply be an extreme case of writers block, I am glad he can write on and hope he is not ill anymore.

Sorry to say so, but this book is as bad as it gets, Just having skimmed a few reviews, some people question who wrote the book, given how farI got, I still think, it is written by Mr, McFadyen people change, although I think, this smells of writers block, but that is just a guess,

This drags, it is now quite a few yearsI think since I read my last book by Cody McFadyen sidestory, I bought into this author first, as I thought he was a female, but sadly, I was wrong.
That last book was sitelinkDer Menschenmacher which was first published in German my first language, so I read it in German, and after reading it with its philosophical theme of Nietzsche I understand why.
But that was still suspenseful and brutal,

This book drags, beginning shortly after an over the top brutal and fast paced beginning with a lot of dead,
It consists of inner musings of the MC, and scenes of torture, some from history reminding me of sitelinkThe Devil of Nanking aka sitelinkTokyo, Also an unexpected betrayal which is then so farnot further investigated,
The deaths, torture etc, get personal, but the suspense does not come back,
Taking a break I read other books at themark and am not very keen on going back to this book,
My rule is, I do not abandon a book after a third,, Currently I cannot bring myself to read further and whatever happens, even if it picks up, I think, both I and the author have changed too much, so I might drop this author, even if and when I finish the book.


The vision of the author might be to take a major turn in this series and begin a short series consisting of the investigation to bring this sectlike circle of people down I cannot see it finished in the remaining space of the book.
That might be interesting, even for me, but I do not feel it,

Maybe something totally different happens and this might be the last book in this series, I will only know once I finish, but as I do not want to spoil it, just take

this: so far I think, this is not recommended, and only hardcore fans of Cody McFadyen and those ADD people who read all from certain authors regardless how bad it is, should read it.


Even if some books by my favorite authors dragged in the middle, this one is too long and too far out, even though I had an advanced course in Philosophy during my last school years and have still some interest in it.


So far I would rate itmeager, And as always my review is longer than usual with this rating,

In trying to clean up myebooks strong "Currently Reading"shelf, which mostly consists of startedboredmeontothenextbook, I will try to getbooks either as definite DNF or FF, This one is currently FF FastForward, like on a VHSVideoplayer, if you are old enough remember them, . . ah, well, kidding, FF does exist on Netflix / Amazon Prime andK Bluray whatever,

YES! Finished it, finally, Might peek into the next books, to see how it ends, but not if they are as expensive as I expect, and if they take as long to be published I have lost my drive to read the worst of the worst with this book, and most books I read are not as boring.
While I can recognize this overthetop dark book, it offers no suspense and I do not like the torture offered by it,

Strongly discourage picking this up, even for free or lent, The second star is for fans of the series, those who need even the bad books by an author to complete their collection, For someone in the search for really bad ideas this might be a brilliant book, but then again, there are better examples in older literature, the Classic de Sade'sdays of Sodom comes to mind.
And even that I have only read parts, not everything, The sheer encompassing timeline and the story are strong, but the storytelling not, it reads like nonfictionlecturebook, lots of inner monologue little action and so it bored me, Even then there are lots of parts family scenes which should have been cut for getting a shorter book, And Callie's way of speaking with her constantly using "Honeylove" grated on my nerves, Could have been that way in the books before in the series, but they where shorter I think and had stronger stories, more crime, more suspense, so even then I could skipp that in those books, or it was not present.
It seems like ages since we last caught up with FBI agent Smoky Barrett amp her team but if you thought the author was going to ease you back into their lives, think again.


As the book opens, a very pregnant Smoky amp her violent crimes unit travel to a suburb north of Denver where a once sleepy little culdesac now resembles something out of a horror movie.
Three houses, three dead families, The killer also left a couple things for Smoky, a bloody message and, well, that would be telling,
What immediately follows will take your breath away amp quite possibly have you checking the locks on your doors, The hits just keep on coming as it becomes clear a complex, insidious plan has been in the works for years, Those responsible have a simple goal, They just want you to tell the truth,

I was a quarter of the way through before my heart rate returned to normal, Then the story settles down as Smoky, Alan, Callie amp James try to deal with the trauma theyve endured, There is a mountain of information to sift through with tentacles that stretch in surprising directions, Real life events of the pastyears figure into the plot which adds an uneasy truth to the story,

This entry has a different, less linear format than previous books in the series, We spend the middle section largely in Smokys head as she revisits old cases, her personal history amp everything she knows about serial killers, The author has obviously done extensive research on the subject amp doesnt shy away from providing the gory details,

Hence, the following warning, This is a dark, disturbing read full of graphic violence, coarse language amp sexual depravity, More than once it shoved me way outside my comfort zone amp I wouldnt recommend it for those with triggers in these areas, The second half follows a more familiar path as the investigative process takes over amp picks up speed, I have to give Mr, McFadyen credit. Despite many scenes that made me squirm, I kept reading because I HAD to know how it would all play out, The plot is incredibly intricate amp full of WTF moments, But nothing beats the unmasking of one particular character amp I freely admit my delicate little jaw did a runner as I grasped what Id just read,

Do people like this exist God, I hope not, The great irony is that this tendency to deny the presence of evil in the world is exactly what the killers message is all about,

But in the end, after so much darkness, there is hope beaming out of the final pages, Hope for Smoky amp for us as its clear her story isnt finished, Perhaps the author whose own life is a mystery in itself isnt done with her yet, TheGerman Hardcover release can be found sitelinkhere,

So viele Jahre habe ich darauf gewartet, dann wurde das Erscheinungsdatum aufgrund einer schweren Krankheit des Autors, immer wieder verschoben und letzten Endes hat wohl niemand mehr damit gerechnet, das es irgendwann überhaupt nochmal eine Fortsetzung geben wird.
Die Meldung das es nun also endlich doch so weit sein würde, versetzte mich also geradezu in Euphorie,

Als ich dann das Buch in der Hand hatte und endlich mit dem Lesen beginnen konnte, da ging diese Euphorie jedoch sehr schnell gegen Null,

Dabei begann die Geschichte eigentlich spannend und in altbewährter SmokyManier,

Smoky Barrett und ihr Team werden zu einem Tatort nach Denver gerufen, In einer beschaulichen Siedlung hat man gleich drei ermorderte Familien gefunden und der Täter hat eine ganz klare Botschaft hinterlassen die ganz alleine Smoky gilt,

Mehr will ich zum Inhalt nicht sagen, auch deshalb nicht, weil ich das Buch nach etwa der Hälfte frustriert abgebrochen habe, aber dazu komme ich gleich noch, denn zunächst einmal beginnt alles ganz spannend und bereits auf den ersten Seiten kommt es gleich mehrfach zu brenzligen Situationen, die mich den Atem haben anhalten lassen.
Dann jedoch wendet sich das Blatt und die Story wird so abstrus, das ich erstmal gar nicht wusste, wie ich das nun in meinem Kopf verwerten soll, Hinnehmen, weiterlesen, abwarten. Meist funktioniert das gut, doch was Cody McFadyen sich hier zusammengeschrieben hat, entbehrt für mich jeglicher Logik, Die Handlung wird immer konfuser und verwirrender, es gibt endlos viele lose Fäden, die der Autor auf dem Weg zum Ziel dann unbeachtet liegen lässt,

Und Smoky tja, was er mit der toughen Agentin gemacht hat ist mir ein echtes Rätsel, Zwar erläutert McFadyen in einem Interview warum er sie so verändert hat, doch aus der knallharten Frau wird ein, für meinen Geschmack, weinerliches Wesen, das nur seinen eigenen verworrenen und das über Seiten Gedanken nachhängt und völlig irrationale Entscheidungen trifft.


Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist die krasse, aber völlig sinnlose Brutalität, die der Autor hier einbringt, Eine Grausamkeit reiht sich an die Nächste, doch wirklich Sinn ergibt das Ganze nicht,

Irgendwann, als ich mich schon bis zur Hälfte durchgequält hatte, habe ich die Seiten nur noch überflogen und das Buch schlussendlich abgebrochen,

Ich bin enttäuscht, ganz ehrlich, denn McFadyen hat in der Vergangenheit mehrfach bewiesen das er geniale Thriller schreibt, Und gerade weil wir nun alle so lange auf diesen neuen Band gewartet haben, habe ich irgendwie etwas Besseres, Genialeres erwartet,

Und genau aus diesem Grund kann ich dem Buch nicht mehr als einen Cupcake verleihen, der nicht an die Handlung, sondern eher ans wirklich toll gelungene Cover geht.
