on Dear Mr. Washington

historical fiction picture book about the painting of Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington, The author imagines the hilarious episodes in which Stuart's children might've interrupted his painting sessions with their humorous shenanigans,

I liked the incorporation of Washington's Rules of Good Behavior for Boys and Girls, The change in medium for this bookinabook feature was a nice touch and the inclusion of the rules heightened the humor in this tale,

Pen and paper, acrylic paint on canvas, and digital media artwork, Recommended for Grades.

Fun Funny I think not! These illustrations are the depiction of chaos, and the words are chockfull of grammatical errors.
The author flunked this test, and "someone lied to him, " ugh Very tenuously based on the true story of Gilbert Stuart painting George Washington's portrait, However, it is a very funny book, with an entertaining glimpse of history, This story is wonderful and perfect for President's Day lessons in the library! Based on the famous painting of George Washington, comes a fun series of letters of how the painting came to be.
This story is a great introduction to the proper way of writing a letter and can teach students the significance of handwritten letters, Students can use this book as a reference on the proper way to write letters and learn about the famous painting done by Gilbert Stuart, Such fun! We all enjoyed this, I heard about it on the Read Aloud Revival Podcast, Message learned: There's a real person behind the perfectly posed person in history pictures you're looking at,

I read the end note first, and I'm glad I did, The book read as letters from one of the children of the painter who painted THE portrait of Washington, However, there are no letters, The children's names aren't even remembered in history, That's sad.

Had I not read the end note first, I would have believed it was actual letters from the child, They were written so well! They perfectly captured the time and seemed like an innocent and naive child watching one of the most powerful men in our country.
The pictures were a perfect fit to the text,

Overall, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't stellar, I read this with my stepdaughter for bedtime story, While I really liked the fact that it was based on a true story, I had a hard time with how the book was laid out.
I thought it was a little confusing, especially for children, That made me sad, because I bought it for her while I was in Washington DC, hoping it would be the perfect gift to come home with.
I love history, I love George Washington, but I did not like this book, Theres too much text to make it a good readaloud, The “modernized” take on Washingtons rules are still way above the heads of any young readers, And by the midpoint of the story I was bored, History shouldnt be boring and picture books REALLY shouldnt be boring, And the best part of this one was the authors note at the end, We checked this book out from the library for a Presidents Day read, It was a really fun introduction to George Washington for myandyear old,

Its fictitious but draws upon the event of George Washington getting his most famous portrait painted, The main character is actually one of the children of the artist who paints Washingtons portrait so my kids connected to the story wonderfully,

It was humorous and relatable to my kids and helped them want to ask the question, “Who was George Washington and why did they paint a picture of him” It led to some great discussion and added interest to our longer read about Washington.

Highly recommended foryear olds Delightful! My grandchildren love it, This lively picture book shares the thoughts of a young girl who wants President Washington to understand that she and her brothers are very sorry for their boisterous behavior and they do hope he return and smile for their father who is painting his portrait.
Charlotte is the daughter of a famous painter who created the famous Washington portrait, Charlotte writes letters to Washington and shares many thoughts about her family, their manners and his need to smile for his portrait, I found the book to be engaging, the format useful and that this book would introduce historical fiction to young readers and reinforce other ELA elements for older readers.
I will buy a copy of this book for my library, I kept singing "dear Mr Washington" to the tune of "dear Mr Hamilton" from Hamilton, My Charlotte especially liked that the letters were from a young girl named Charlotte, Based on a true story, this enchanting picture book will have everyone smiling, When George Washington comes to the Stuart house to have his official portrait painted, the children must all by on their best behavior, But it doesnt quite work out that way, With each visit to the house, Charlotte has to write another letter of apology, She has to apologize for the cat racing up his shoulder, for the baby chewing on his hair ribbon, and much more, She shares a list of how they will be better behaved the next time, But then there are her many examples in the following letter of how very good they had been, which was not actually true, In each and every letter though, she is cajoling Mr, Washington to smile in his picture, Can a very serious president handle the wild and silly Stuart clan

A large part of the joy of this book is that its based on a true story.
You can read the authors note at the end to see just how much, The interplay between Mr. Washington and the children is lovely, He mutters under his breath, ignores them as best he can, and yet it all ends up a mess anyway, And the children themselves are cheery and playful, undeterred by either their parents demanding they behave or the scowling Mr, Washington.

Carpenters art adds

to the fun, She merrily depicts the naughty children from the baby chewing on Mr, Washingtons shoe to the entire group falling asleep all together on top of him, Its great to see a historical book that is playful and fun,

A great read aloud, this book is funny, silly and filled with history and art, What more could you want Appropriate for ages,
Since we are studying George Washington, I checked out several books on the first president to read with our children,

This is a fun children's book which creates a fictional story regarding the famous portrait of Washington by Gilbert Stuart, It also includes some of the rules regarding manners that Washington copied down himself when he was a boy,

I would recommend this book to families wishing to read more about Washington, It also provides a great opportunity to discuss how real can be fictionalized, Utterly adorable. I'm with the author I hope the Stuart children had something to do with Mr, Washington's smile! I thought this book was more about George Washington, if anything, and the kids' poor efforts in trying to impress Washington, We all know he didn't like to smile, Thought it was a cute way of depicting what life was like for kids in early America, where children were "best seen and not heard, " This is the firstbook I've read worthy of a Caldecott discussion, The illustrations add so much to the text and tell a story all on their own, I liked how the artwork switched to an oil painted style for the listing of the rules, I realize that Capitalizing Random words in the Middle of the sentence is a throwback of some sort, but it was distracting, Nevertheless, a lovely and engaging book that could lead to educational discussions of history, The author's note on what inspired him to write the book was very nice as well, "Dear Mr. Washington" is a book about Charlotte Stuart, the daughter of the artist who painted George Washington, writing letters to George Washington about the events before, after, and during the paining of him.
This book is great to introduce Historical Fiction to young readers who are curious about America's history when it comes to who was the first president.
This book also showcases the format of letters, and would be good for students to learn how to write a letter, A fun lesson on writing a letter to the president could be a great expansion on this book as well as growing and developing students' writing skills.
What if it did happen this way Brilliant, Terrific illustrations and very relatable, Kids will probably like the flea bit too, This is a loosely based rendition of the first President of the United States and a portrait that was painted of him, The story is told through the eyes of the a little girl, the daughter of the man who painted Washington, Very cute. Our first president went to Gilbert Stuart's house to get his portrait painted, This is the author's imagined tale of how the family got Washington to smile for the painting, I thought the book “Dear Mr, Washington” was going to be about George Washington and his life, Instead this book is about a young girl who writes a letter to Mr, Washington about her life in America during this time period, I think this book is a great breath of fresh air that can be read while learning about presidents or even just a fun read during the year.
Based on the true story behind Gilbert Stuart's famous portraits of Washington, this funny historical read will leave rascals, ruffians, and troublemakers of all ages laughing.

Charlotte, James, and baby John have promised to be on their very best behavior for when George Washington comes to have his portrait painted by their father, Gilbert Stuart.
But, it seems like every time George Washington comes to visit, Charlotte has to write another apology letter, even when they try to follow George Washingtons Rules of Good Behavior.
If these whippersnappers want any dessert, they are going to have to learn some mannersand fast! What results is a hilarious chain of events, a giant messand a painting that will be remembered for centuries to come.
