life is a breath of fresh air foryear old Ellie Baylor, a painfully shy but beautiful art major.
She has her canvas and charcoal and that's more than enough, Her choice to go to school far from home and the watchful eye of her strict parents seems like the perfect thing for smooth sailing into an easy life.
But when River Daniels, a charming artist with eyes the color of hot chocolate, asks her to join him in a project for class, Ellie may get more than just an A.
She might find out how to live, Ellie Baylor is painfully shy, She's spent her entire life bottling her emotions and clinging to the highly religious buttonedup values her parents demand of her, but she's ready to break free.
Enter River Daniels, an equally awkward but gentle art major who shares Ellie's passion for art, Together they navigate the rocky terrain of new love while Ellie finds her own voice,
Charcoal and Hot Chocolate is a good story, It had all the elements I love in New Adult literature, including quirky best friends, parent drama, and smoldering love scenes, but I had a hard time getting into the story.
Ellie is shy as a character, but it seemed to take a really long time for her to come out of her shell, and as a reader I was close to giving up.
I'm glad I stuck with it because in the
end the story is good and Ellie emerges as a likable lead character.
I really liked River as a male love interest, He's patient and kind with the incredibly toughtocrack Ellie and makes for the perfect book boyfriend,
Even though the general storyline is generally good, the writing in the book isn't completely polished.
For example, the book switches between Ellie and River's point of view, and at one point the author switches in the middle.
It's clearly just an oversight in editing, but it was distracting and caused me to go back and forth rereading to see who's point of view we were supposed to be in.
The other thing that is lacking is a feeling of any real tension or conflict in the story.
Ellie likes River and River likes Ellie, so there's not a lot to go on, Later in the novel there is a great storyline where Ellie's best friend Sam goes to rehab for alcoholism and it was a great point of conflict and tension.
I almost wish the book would have had this dynamic as its main focus because it was really very good.
The love story left me wanting more,
In the end this book was good, but some of the writing quirks left me wanting a more polished piece of writing.
Move over, Phoenix, a NEW River has my heart!
First of all, CampHC was a very quick read, and I liked that about it.
I'm becoming a huge fan of dual POV and I think that each MC was given their own voice in this book which can be very hard to do.
For the most part, I loved CampHC, I loved River from Day One, His slightly awkward persona was relatable and lovable, and I couldn't get enough of him! Honestly, I think I could really get into a spinoff in just River's POV.
He was my favorite part of this book, The author's physical descriptions of him were so well done, and I love a hot body with a brain andbonus!he has a passion for art.
It appeals to the creative in me, and the fact that I can be shallow at times thus, my love for his body.
I'm not even sorry. Who, me Shallow Nevah!
I loved the transformation of the main characters, especially Ellie, Watching her grow, though frustrating at times, was a wonderful part of this journey,
Which brings me to my next thought, . . I had mixed feelings while reading CampHCfor the first half of the book, onlybecause I had some small issues with Ellie's behavior and her back and forth, hot and cold treatment of River.
Maybe because I liked him so much and wanted her to get with the program
Like Ellie, I'm at times brave and at times insecure, and most of the time a hot mess, and I really wanted to connect with her.
. . I wish I had just a tiny bit more, BUT, I've never really been shymy insecurities rear their ugly heads in a loudmouthed, overlyconfident and opinionated sort of wayso it could just be that I was unable to connect with Ellie fully because of how different she and I are.
And frankly, my small issues with Ellie's behavior did not create any detachment from the story, Well, maybe a little, but I still fully invested in the relationships between Ellie and River, Ellie and her friends.
. . even Ellie and her parents ugh, what nightmares they were! But I have to admit that had I been a bit more capable of connecting to Ellie, I would have probably been even more invested than I was.
With that said, not every reader will connect with every character, It happens.
All in all, CampHC was an enjoyable read, complete with laughter, tears, and sexy times yes, you read that correctly, SEXY TIMES.
It is a great contemporary new adult read, and a fantastic debut, We've all read those books where you become so completely engrossed that you forget how to function throughout the rest of your day.
You know, the one where you're trying to do everything onehanded because you don't want to put the book down.
. . you're that attached to the story and the characters, Charcoal and Hot Chocolate was like that for me, Within the first few pages I was hooked on Ellie, She was so easily relatable and reminded me so much of a few people that I know and a little bit of myself!, but then.
. . oh then enter River! I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I picture River, I see a young Jared Padalecki circa seasonsampof Supernatural, in other words.
. . sigh. Can someone please make my husband read this book and then tell him to be River PLEASE Okay, I digress.
This book was fantastical in every way, I loved all the characters and really want them to all be real, I want them to be my friends in real life! Irene, I love you give me more River please!!! I just finished this book and I don't know what to do with myself.
It draws you in as soon as you open it and it causes you to neglect everything you had to do because you can't put it down.
I'm so attached to these characters not only because I can relate so well, but because I want to be friends with them, I want to be in their circle of friends, I feel like I was in their circle of friends.
This book was so carefully crafted and meets it's full potential, It's so realistic, it's crazy, I feel a personal connection to River, Ellie, Barbra, Sam, Connor, and oh my goodness I just want to hug Windy and Mitch and be loved by them.
So in love. Irene is an amazing writer beyond worth the read! I picked up Charcoal and Hot Chocolate hoping for a good read, but got an amazing one instead.
How Irene wrote Ellie and River's story is spot on and felt more like I was reading a real love story instead of a fictional one.
Ellie's a shy art student with strict parents that she chooses to get away from by going to school far away from them.
She's content with her life and art, but then here comes River who I love so freakin much! His awkwardness mixed with her shyness sucked me in.
I like characters who aren't just beautiful people with no issues to dirty their perfectness, Maybe it's because of this trait Irene gave him that made River so understanding as Ellie blossomed into the girl she is in the end of the book.
Honestly, I think I love this book so much more because of River than Ellie and I really do like her a ton.
She's a wonderful MC and one that I generally identify with,
And that's why I really held on for the ride, Ellie. How Irene wrote her in a way that made me feel like we could be friends, She felt real and I like that, It's that realness that made her journey with River one that I was willing to invest in,
Allinall, Charcoal and Hot Chocolate is a NA book that I highly recommend, It's a read you won't regret and I promise that! I'm giving it a solid A!
