requested a copy of Snake Road by Sue Peebles to review not knowing that the book was from a UK author.
I believe that I have only read books written by American authors, so this was a new experience for me,
Snake Road takes place in Scotland, and is the story of three generations of women in the Copella family.
The main character, Aggie, has suffered a recent miscarriage that she is having trouble coming to terms with, The miscarriage has also caused quite a strain on her marriage as both her and her husband are each overwhelmed with their own grief.
Instead of making them closer, it is pushing them further apart, Aggie decides to leave and go stay with her parents for awhile, Her Grandmother, Peggy, lives with her parents, and is fighting her own battle as well, . with Dementia. With memories that only come in bits and pieces, her past is a mystery to her granddaughter, who feels compelled to discover the secrets that are becoming more and more obscure to Peggy due to her dementia.
This is an emotional story that deals with very heavy topics miscarriage and dementia, The author handles this topics with a gentleness that the reader can appreciate, Such topics make for difficult reading, and I felt like Sue Peebles did an excellent job of portraying how they come to affect the family.
Snake Road is not only a tale of loss, but also of hope, It is the story of a girl's quest to uncover the secret past of her grandmother, while working through her own grief.
While I can't say this was an enjoyable story due to the subject matter, I do feel it was wellwritten and offered a poignant presentation of the subject matter.
I received this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review, I absolutely loved this book, The prose is succulent and spicy, shot through with humour and a deep empathy that is both emotional and informed by formal psychology.
I'm going straight out to find The Death of Lomond Friel, Finding this book was the result of having a rare opportunity to just browse the fiction shelves of my little local libraryalways such a delight in any library.
And it's a gem, dealing with family relationships and the things we don't know about our parents and even grandparents, about the fallout resulting from a miscarriage, and about dementiaall with great sensitivity and some beautifully poetic language.
And as usual, I refuse to give more plot detail than that, but suffice to say that Sue Peebles' first novel which I shall now look for in the library catalogue won the Scottish First Book Award and the Saltire First Book Award, and was shortlisted for Scottish Book of the Year.
Snake Road is her second novel and was shortlisted for the Encore Award, And I still hate this systemfor me,means a jolly good book, means an extremely good book, andis only for a very rare exceptional book that makes me gasp with wonder at how good it is.
Atmospheric account of love and loss across the generations and the difficulties people have communicating about the things that matter to them.
Its the other baby I think about most, the one Gran spoke of the day I told her I was pregnant.
I used to picture my own baby, her chalky face round as a clock, but now theres this other one,
Aggie is struggling to make sense of her life, but shes determined to make sense of her grans life, even if everyone else thinks she should be concentrating on other things, like her faltering marriage.
Back in the family home grandmother Peggy nests at the top of the house, rarely leaving her room.
She says shes making her way to heaven, but when Aggie moves in again she soon realises that things are far from heavenly in the
Coppella household.
Snake Road is a tale of loss and hope, Told through the unblinking eye of Aggie, a family history is revealed that breaks and heals in equal measure, Stepping into difficult emotional terrain, Sue Peebles has written a heartbreaking novel filled with astonishing empathy, gentleness, wit and beauty, .
