received this book through the Goodreads first read ballot draw, I really enjoyed it. I like history and the personal take combined with the extensive research really carried this book,
The central character being a "foot soldier" rather than a military leader, living the life of one of the many brave volunteers who put their lives on the line for their beliefs makes it a historical account with a difference.
The fact that this soldier, Ambrose Cobb, was an ancestor of the author adds the poignancy of a personal family album to the historical significance of the events recounted.
As a family the Cobbs played a big part in their community, farming, trading, founding churches and generally influencing the lives of their neighbourhood for many years with their work ethic and determination, and in the book we see how one individual from that family saw out the Civil War and his legacy.
The author's research is aided by a vibrant and lucid centenarian, a venerable lady, his aunt Helen, recalling the family life of Ambrose a hundred years later as well as his connections, made through his role in various films centred on the Civil War.
As I said I really enjoyed the book, I learnt a lot about a war I didn't really know much about,
The only negative is the editing, The book is brimming over with small printing errors such as incorrectly placed quotation marks and spelling inconsistencies that could put off anyone not gripped by the story it was telling.
But the story is a very good one, and the author's style an unusual one, His sentences have a unique construction which once you get used to it adds to the story's charm: it becomes his voice,
I did like the spacing of the paragraphs though, The extra width of the gaps gives a nice pause to the flow, which somehow worked well for me,
This is a story of a significant episode of American history told from one point of view, and as such a valuable one,
Well done, Mr R, P. Cobb. This book was alright. For those who enjoy stories about the American Civil War era, fictional or otherwise, this might be the book for you,
