These are stories to be read at dusk, just as it is beginning to be dark and mysterious outsidebut be sure you have a light close by to chase away the shadows! Back in grade school, I was reading books of scary,spooky stories by the dozens, most of which have since dissolved into the recesses of my memory.
However, there was one collection of tales whose offbeat approach to the fantastic and supernatural has alluded me for years it contained a story which I have never forgotten, about two bookloving brothers, and how when the younger sibling was accidentally knocked into a coma, the elder read to him until he awoke.
That story, 'Reading to Matthew', and the book that contained it, has come to represent that unbearable poignancy inherent in childhood that remains mired in the past, inexorably beyond one's grasp.

I have at long last found that book, and it is this so, I will try to go home again, and hope it doesn't result in a disappointment of Proustian proportions.
