Back in grade school, I was reading books of scary,spooky stories by the dozens, most of which have since dissolved into the recesses of my memory.
However, there was one collection of tales whose offbeat approach to the fantastic and supernatural has alluded me for years it contained a story which I have never forgotten, about two bookloving brothers, and how when the younger sibling was accidentally knocked into a coma, the elder read to him until he awoke.
That story, 'Reading to Matthew', and the book that contained it, has come to represent that unbearable poignancy inherent in childhood that remains mired in the past, inexorably beyond one's grasp.
