moving. I felt that the story conveyed a genuine knowledge of this challenges of the foster care system and of its inadequacies, and it presented this in a heartfelt and sympathetic way.
I believe the story could have been more linear, and that the ending was too abrupt, It felt rushed and simple compared to the rest of the book, I would have walked away with a more completed feeling if this had been handled with the same detail as the beginning and middle of the story.
I'm on the fence about this, This book gives a clear description of the merits and failings of the foster care system through the eyes of an extremely dedicated foster care couple.
I have read many similar books and find them all including this one to be gut wrenching, I did feel that the sequencing in the story, the linear description was a bit choppy and the ending rather abrupt but over all it was a book well worth reading.
A masterfully rendered tale. Exactly as emotional as it needed to be, I was deeply invested in the characters from page one, I look forward to more from Avi Morris, This is therd book I have read about abuse but the first one written from the viewpoint of the foster parent, It takes very special people to open their lives to troubled young people and you can see just how special and wonderful these foster parents were.
The love they have for Tina and their exhaustive efforts to advocate for her are incredible,

Another reviewer commented on the distributing description of the abuse Tina suffered, It was very shocking to read but do not hesitate to read this book because of that, Most of the book details Tina overcoming her abuse and her relationship with her foster parents, It was a gripping read, . . a rollercoaster until the end, Excellent! Tina is an incredible person and survivor! I've been waiting to read this for some time
Really good , but Hal really ticked me off I struggled with the rating of this book.
This was a compelling, honest view into the foster care system and all parties involved, I really wanted to see what the outcome would be for the girls and good foster placements are so valuable,
On the other hand, I thought some of the abuse accounts were too descriptive and I have read A LOT of books on abuse.
I also thought some of the language and scenarios didn't quite fit the story,
Allinall a decent book, very real but tough to read,
This book was amazing, Wonderfully written, it keeps you interested and attached emotionally to every character throught, A riveting, fastpaced true story of Hal and Roberta's beloved foster daughter, a child, Valentina, who was raped over and over by her mother's boyfriend, a rapist fully protected by Valentina's mother who could not imagine living without her lover.
Just as crocodile teeth are hollow, so too the heart of this woman was empty, Noteworthy in this masterfully woven tale, is the contrast between the stable, predictable, secure routine of Valentina's foster parents, the court system and family services, and the jagged ups and downs of Valentina's family of origin, always in chronic chaos and violent drama.
. . until amazing choices are made, Equally impressive are the details of the court case including fascinating facts about pedophiles who often marry insecure women and are only too thrilled when their spouses produce adorable little girls.
An excellent and moving read!

Eleanor Cowan, author of : A History of a Pedophile's Wife A compelling look at today's foster care system.
A must read! After reading aboutof the book, I reached out to the author and asked if this book was fact, fiction or a little of both.

Avi Morris immediately wrote back and stated in part that the book, . .

"is a fictionalized version of the true story of two of my foster daughters, The events in the books are told from the father's viewpoint and are fairly closely based on actual events, The events related in the third person, especially those shown as flashbacks to "Tina's" early years before becoming our foster daughter are based on what I learned from her and her sister.
The abuses Tina and her sister suffer in the story are pretty much exactly as I was told by them, "

He ended with, . .

"I hope you continue to like the book, I understand that the topic isn't easy and I know of a few people who couldn't get through it, I'll be interested in your final reaction, "

My final reaction is very positive, Morris has a way of writing that allows the reader to feel she is experiencing these events WITH the author, Yes, the events are horrific, but if Morris could 'live through them', then so could I, The story is presented in a very logical, straightforward way, Even though there are flashbacks, they are identified by date, I encourage the reader to pay close attention to these dates, just so that there is no confusion,

Thank you, Avi, for writing this very poignant memoir,

Avi Morris tells the compelling story about a strong young woman who survived abuse and her foster parents, This fastpaced story talks about child abuse and the child protection and legal system in our country, Morris has written an incredible piece of fiction based upon true events that is eye opening read,
I enjoyed the way Avi Morris told the story from shifting points of view, With each chapter more of the story and backstory were revealed, The characters seemed extremely realistic, From Valentina who was trying to deal with her family, abuse, not being loved, and wanting to live a normal life to Hal, a man who was hesitant to be a foster parent at first who became one of Valentinas biggest supporters.
The emotions of the characters seemed raw and real throughout,
In addition to the emotion of the characters, Morris has evoked a range of emotions for the readers: sadness, disgust, happiness, relief, and success.
What is a devastating tale ends up being a truly uplifting story, Stories like this are unfortunately more common than they should be, This realistic book told such a tragic story and showed the reality of how our society and system can both hurt and help these children.
Morris has written a book that will make

you laugh and cry and I recommend it to all,
I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads,
This book is a heavy, serious work, When I rate it four, this does not mean I enjoyed it, This is not the kind of book you "like" it is the kind of work that is necessary and important, The author puts an alltoo common face on the maelstrom that is the foster care system, and though this book hurt my soul, I am glad I read it.

Its plot could easily be an SVU episode, and the characters are wellwritten, It is very easy to ascertain the motivations and weaknesses of the people in this book,

I was disappointed by the cover, and do not understand why the word "Crocodile" was separate in font than the rest.
In all, four different fonts were selected for the cover, and I found it distracting, This, however, was a stylized choice and didn't really affect my reading of this work other than my first blush impression of the book itself.

"Crocodile Mothers Eat Their Young: A Child's Story of Abuse and Survival" could easily be integrated into social work and sociology textbook lists, and I think it would segue nicely into a lot of the topics discussed in these disciplines.
I absolutely did not want this book to end, Child abuse is one of my favorite subjects mostly because of my mothers childhood, It was extremely refreshing to read about a character like Valentina, A young girl who's experienced the most disgusting acts of violence and rape yet she was so vibrant and happy, This book was absolutely amazing, I didn't expect the ending to go the way it did but it was beautiful, I wish Netflix turned this into a mini series!! People need to hear and see this story!! Becoming a parent is a huge responsibilityan frightening commitment to eighteen some odd years of protecting a screaming little bundle of insanity.
Protecting it from itself, from the world, and from your own tendency to lose your temper sometimes, It's a lot of work but most people manage to do it fairly well,

And then there's this woman, Failed on all counts and truly made your skin creep, Luckily the book wasn't about herit was the hopeful story of the rescue of one of her children, Ormore realisticallyhow the two older girls managed to rescue themselves and the foster Mom and Dad who helped them,

Parts of the book were told from the Dad's point of view and the parts that he didn't personally witness are just relayed flatly, as a newspaper narrative.
Which is only fairanything more would have felt "made up", or sensational, But I would have enjoyed reading the Mom's story, She's the one who instigated it allhe was just dragged in against his will, In fact, she seems the true hero of the story, If you've read, "Etched in Sand" by Regina Calcaterra, and found yourself mentally shaking your fist at the foster care system, " Crocodile Mothers Eat Their Young" will elicit the same response.

While Etched was a memoir written by a survivor about how she managed to survive years of homelessness, abandonment, and abuse, Avi Morris' book is fiction based on his own experience as a foster parent.
In this case, the story is not only of Valentina's perseverance, but of her foster parents' love and desire to assure their charge has a better life, one she truly deserves.

This is a wellwritten debut novel, It reveals the importance of people who care enough to challenge a dysfunctional bureaucratic system and who have the emotional intelligence necessary to guide a confused teenager.
POWERCOMPASSION. GRIPPING and PAINFUL ABUSE

These are only a few adjectives to describe this book written with well defined details of the characters.
This detail to characters is described in all aspects of the abusive lives for Selena and Valentina Tina and the author Avi Morris deserves an applause for his outstanding ability to grip the emotions of his readers yet hold sacred his love for the two girls.

While the author fictionalized this story to protect the innocence of two young girls he did not leave you doubt of the incredible tales that unfold before you watching the girls suffer abuse at such young ages.

You will find not much to laugh about but much hope as you weep at the cruelty of the girls Mother, Luz Diaz for the simplest of the abuseindifference! A mother, that stands by and allows a boyfriend to take the liberties of sexual abuse of children, sickens you and keeps you reading in hopes you discover in the end both the boyfriend, Simon and mother, Luz Diaz rot in a prison for years to come but you will need to read this wonderfully told story and learn for yourself if justice is done and who if anyone goes to jail!

You will be amazed at the different characters and how many did not follow up knowing the girls were in trouble and relieved they had the love and protection from Hal and Roberta.
The Guardianinlitem attorney was the one positive that will cheer you on,

There are many other characters well developed but I will let you discover them on your own and decide for yourself if they were a helpful influence or not.

Haven been a victim of child abuse from the age of fouryears, this story drew me in and in many ways helped me complete my own path of dealing with the trauma of growing up.

Well done Mr, Morris. This book should be in the schools for required reading as other books about child abuse so other victims can heal or begin their journey to do so with hope there is an end.

A Story of Survival WOW! First of all, let me begin by saying how much I love Goodreads.
Here, one can find some great reads, . and where others can recommend great reads to you, AND, this is how I came across Crocodile Mothers Eat Their Young, The title of this book would probably not be one I would have checked out further, but the author, Avi Morris, had sent me a note recommending his book since I had read Spilled Milk and liked that.
This is a book about the foster care system, It deals with some very disturbing subject matter, I do feel like it is good to read books away from the romance, mystery, feelgood subjects once in awhile, Avi Morris has the perfect background including being a lawyer and foster parent, to be able to put the reader right into the story line.
In fact, I had to double check that, yes, this book had been fictionalized, This would be a good read for a highschool english class, for a book club, and even for those who aren't just sure how they would like to further their education or those looking for a change in their career path.
Who knows . you might just find your nitch in life, helping struggling kids. This story was also filled with emotionincluding hope, courage, perseverance, love and strength, I would definitely read another book by Avi Morris, and thank you for your recommendation :A,
