book started a little slowly for me, but I really enjoyed the writing style and that was enough to carry me into the meat of the story where it got really addictive.
Another reviewer has already mentioned the inevitable inclination to liken this novel to Harry Potter, and as that reviewer has said, such a comparison would be a mistake, For me, if any comparison were to be drawn, it would be with Pullmans “His Dark Materials”, primarily for its ongoing conflict between two governing bodies, and the interweaving intrigue for the reader who does not know which side they should be rooting for.
At the beginning of the book, the main characters are on the cusp of progressing to secondary education/years of age, To my mind they came across as older, This did not spoil my enjoyment of the story though, and I ended up simply reading them as the age my imagination took me to,
All in all, a great first book in what promises to be a good series, Recommended reading Im looking forward to book two,
Any story of an elevenyearold boy which takes place in a boarding school where children with special powers learn how
to use their gifts is inevitably going to invite comparisons.
Dont do it. Read this on its own merits, Michaels uncle died when he was born, leaving him an old, locked book in his grandmothers safe keeping, Michael was the first baby born in the new millennium, a fact of significance, There are two secret groups here, the group which runs the school, searching for its new Grand Inquisitor, and another, called the Elder Council, Michael has been taught to distrust the Council but should he Who is telling him the truth
This storys strengths are that Michael is a believable character and is faced with puzzles and trials, both physical and mental, which test his mettle.
Nothing comes easily to him and though we are willing him on, we dont know who he can trust either, He is faced with a great conflict which sees him fighting his best friend, I felt that sometimes his, and others, feelings were a little adult for children of that age but the story carried me along with it, Im pleased to say that this is the first of a series, Im sure Ill read the others,
This is the first title in the Book of Jerrick series,
If you do read it, please take the time to leave an honest review, I've always felt that the best way to grow as an author, is to read the opinions of the audience,
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it,
G. J. Reilly. Michael Ware unknowingly finds himself on the brink of war, Officially the first child born at the turn of the millennium, Michael has inherited a gift that will one day force him to choose between the sorcerers of the Elder Council and the psychics of the Inquisition.
When Michael leaves home for the exclusive Braxton Academy, he discovers that the truth depends on your point of view, and that comfort and opulence come at a heavy price.
Inquisitor is a thought provoking mixture of history and legend, in a twist on the modern world, Its gentle humour and dark scenes will appeal to readers of all ages, but especially to those looking for somewhere to escape to, Any book about a young boy going off to a special school with a bit of magic will inevitably be compared to Harry Potter, I've not read the HP books but have seen the films and this is nothing like them,
The young main character, Michael wins a rare scholarship along with a friend from school, Michael isand I was picturing my nephew who is clever and just turned, but Michael seemed older, especially as he has to learn things such as his special powers and also quite serious fighting.
There are two enemies that want to get rid of each other, but which side is good and which side is evil
Even though I'm not the target audience, I enjoyed this story.
It kept me gripped and interested and entertained, More importantly, it left me wondering who really was the "hero" of the story, Although titled as Part, this is definitely a stand alone with a satisfying conclusion, whilst setting things up for further stories, An actionpacked start, then settled down to a less exciting, more mysterious part with a schoolboy pondering his secondary school future and trying to get in to the alarmingly vague and horrendously expensive college that no one seems to know much about.
Personally Id hesitate to send any child to somewhere about which so little is known, but the Wares seem very proud of him, There are inevitably Harry Potter echoes, but this is altogether more menacing and intricate, I did see the final twist coming but was happy to see it, nevertheless: sets things up for an enjoyable series, aimed at the YA fantasy readership, By day, G. J. Reilly is a teacher of mostly ICT in the South Wales valleys, where he lives with his long suffering wife and, cats. Having gained his degree, he spent ten years working in industry, before deciding to change career and head into education, In many ways, it is the young people that he has taught that have influenced the way in which his characters have developed, With an interest in high fantasy, contemporary fantasy and science fiction from a young age, it comes as no surprise that his first work falls into the young adult contemporary fantasy genre.
