not much to this book but it's great anyway, A short and snappy introduction to the whats and hows of launching a campaign based off Lucy's experience with the No more Pagecampaign.
A solid book that while not being a road map to making change points you in the right direction and get your excited to get on the road.
Interesting how to guide from the founder of no more pagewhich takes you through the key points about how to sort out the world essentially.
Really good. Good advice for activism. In my not so respectable middle age I find myself reflecting from time to time on what it means to be an activist, and on my coming to activism in the lates as a long run of mass movement politics was coming to a head.
In the UK, where I now live, this long run took in the peace movement of thes and the trade union and workers activism of thes in New Zealand, where I then lived, this long run took the antiVietnam War campaigns, the antiapartheid movement, Maori land and civil rights and the activism against the neoliberal onslaught of the mids.
The thing about being in this long run of activism was that I almost always found myself working with someone whod done something like what we were doing before.


Changes to the way activism played itself out in thes especially meant that in both NZ and the UK I cant speak for anywhere else, but did get the same sense when I lived in Australia for a while in the mids this continuity was, to a large degree, lost.
On top of that, by the time we got to the mids potential for online activism had further shifted the landscape of pressure group politics.
These shifts mean that LucyAnne Holmes excellent little book is timely and extremely valuable,

Holmes was the force behind one of the UKs most successful citizen campaigns in recent years, No More Page, that aimed to get glamour photography removed from The Sun newspaper: after overyears of topless young women taking up most of that papers third page, theyve gone the young women are still there, their breasts no longer bared.
That sounds like success, no matter what the protestations of The Suns editor, How To Start a Revolution is no more than a few thousand words long, and each chapter only a few hundred and has great advice on getting underway, finding a tone of voice that works, finding/making a support network and campaign group, using online petitions and social media, picking your target, direct action and stunts, dealing with abuse and a host of other topics.
Holmes maintains a light and engaging tone, covers all the main things we need to know and make sure we do as campaigners and seems to have found the right pitch.


There are lots of analyses of social movements out there, fewer but still a good number of campaigners guides

it might be a sign of my stuckinthemudness that I still really like Anthony Jays Householders Guide to Community Defence Against Bureaucratic Aggression, a delightfully ironic title for a good handbook for rabble rousers but it was published inand the political and activist landscape is very different.
LucyAnne Holmes excellent new guide to activism is a great place to start if you want to change the world or just your little corner of it but dont have a spare old time activist in the neighbourhood would that more of the activist guides were this accessible, this honest and this useful.
Its so good that at,itd be cheap at thrice the price, Short and interesting about LucyAnne being fed up with pictures of halt naked women in family newspapers, Would love for a longer version of this, I love the down to earth nature and simplified empowering instructional feel, after reading this I campaigned for the first trans specific sexual health clinic in Scotland, Now there is one.
Enough said really. This was a quick, straightforward guide for how to start a campaign framed by the story of the No more Page campaign.
It was very positive and encouraging, but nothing to write home about, Still, I respect LucyAnne Holmes for what she did and for this effort to kickstart that activist spark in others, A lovely small read with a big heart!

Change doesnt just happen, It starts with the idea that something could be different, could be better, It starts with a person who is brave enough to stand up and say, Stop, This is what LucyAnne Holmes did when she wrote a letter to the editor of The Sun asking him to stop printing pictures of topless women on Pageof the paper.
This was something that had been happening for forty five years but which she suddenly realised she found outdated and inappropriate and, after thinking about it, not unrelated to a lot of the bad things that happen to women.
