Find The Keys To Fanny Edited By Sally Wahl Constain Available As Publication
Keys lock in family secrets in the Old World and unlock doors in a new land, one that offers Fanny a chance to learn how to read and write, graphically represented by the Declaration of Independence in the hand of Lady Liberty on the books cover.
The author often waxes poetic as the story unfolds, recording the rhythms of the train leaving Kiev, the lurch of the ship encountering a storm in the Atlantic, and the hum of Fanny and Fredas life in New York, at first in a garment factory.
She observes Fannys wideeyed curiosity at seeing a typewriter for the very first time: “I know its not polite to stare, but Im really curious, I keep my eyelids slightly lowered, but I look at the other women, The one seated on the left is bent over a clicking machine, Her fingers pat the round tabs, Every once in a while, a little bell rings, and her left hand presses on a lever, which pushes a papercovered cylinder to the right, The paper rises with every push, and then she pulls it off the tube, David leans across my aunt, Taiping, he whispers, Taiping, I repeat in my head, ”
Readers will agree that “Learning is sweet,” a phrase Fanny hears in her head as she copies English words into her notebook, a mantra repeated as a refrain from Papa in a daydream.
A novel of adventure, with a hopeful ending, The Keys to Fanny could very well be the real life story of Fanny Tatch from the village of Vahivka who finds fulfillment in the New World.
Loved this book! I finished this book some time ago, and have picked it up again and again since, Such a thoughtful story. I highly recommend it. Sometimes, when I roll out the dough for the strudel, I see my life rolling away from me, I picture myself as a ball, rolling out the door, rolling under the canopy to wed, and then to my chosen husbands home and kitchen, And bed. Later, somehow, babies will arrive, The little boys will go to school, The girls will go to the kitchen, and on and on,
This gorgeous novel is filled with hope and dreams, Fanny captured my heart from page one with her kindness and cleverness and passion for learning, We begin the story in, in a small Jewish village in the Ukraine, join Fanny on her journey to America, and follow her adventures in New York as she finally has the chance to attend school, learn to read, and meet people of other countries and cultures.
Her right arm is raised and holds her famous torch, I had heard about that, But her left arm is wrapped around a huge book! I stare up at her beautiful face and her kind eyes, They seem to be saying, “Fanny, Ive been waiting for you, Come and read. Your turn has come. ” “Thank you, Lady,” I whisper,
I hope that there will be a sequel to this lovely novel! the Keys to Fanny was a grand read, Especially great for middle school I believe, Also adults will really enjoy this book, which is a historical look at immigrants coming to NYC, I highly recommend it! The Keys To Fanny

Lastly, the ending of the book, which you will have to read to find out, was fantastic.
This is one gifted author that I am happy that I had the pleasure of reading her work,
The negative aspects of the book was hearing that all girls didnt go to school to learn and that only boys went to school,
Along with the fact that we learned that Fannys mother passed away, Learning that Fanny was set up with an arranged marriage by her stepmothers mean nephew was quite saddening as well, Upon reading further into the book we will find out what happens, as I did, I wont tell, you will have to find out yourself so dont ask,
