marshal has the bank in his town robbed and his wife kidnapped, she is later found savagely murdered and he goes on a bloody rampage to Mexico to hunt them down A riproaring tale of revenge and retribution in the tradition of the classic western.
When a gang of wanted outlaws ride into Red Rock, its not long before they leave a trail of death and carnage in their wake, and for lawman Allen Johnson, it literally becomes the worst day of his life.
Motivated by thoughts of revenge and a determination to bring the outlaws to justice, Allen Johnson takes the law into his own hands bank holdups, prison breaks, and galloping chases across the Texas/Mexican border, this is a good solid story of wildwest vengeance and retribution, of a time when if the law couldnt bring a man to justice it would often be brought at the end of a rope or the barrel of a sixgun.
When I first read this book in its original form, as much I
was enjoying the story, I didnt feel that the level of horror and graphically described violence quite gelled with what I thought a western type story should be, and the editing issues were quite distracting.
Since that time, and with a new publisher/editor I understand, the graphic sex/violence has largely been trimmed/cut, and the story shaped much more to fit my boyhood memories of wildwest shootouts and prairie outlaws and bandits.
Being the old west, yes, the violence and brutality of the time is still there, but its portrayed in a way that fits the genre, and without becoming explicitly gratuitous.
The dialogue and narrative are again in tune with the era and my memories of old westerns, and I found the action/story easy to read and follow, I should point out there are still a couple of minor editing issues, but nothing to spoil or distract the reader from thoroughly enjoying this riproaring western, Not having read anything in the Western genre before, I cant say how this compares to others, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one,
Guns of Vengeance: South of the Border
Not much of a story, a lot of unnecessary killing, long chases and poor gun fights and a lot of unnecessary words to make the book longer.
