Mine has not been an eventful life, but distance lends enchantment to the view, and a somewhat large experience of men and things, extending over more than sixty years, and standing out in the softened light of memory, may be interest ing to a new generation.
My reminiscences go back to the Brighton of William IV, to the great world of London of the first days of Victoria, to the Oxford of the Tractarian movement, to the England of coaches and the old poorlaw,
and I have noted the numerous changes which have transformed the nation and the face of the country in many respects since that era, all the more carefully, perhaps, because I am not an Englishman.
