Syntelle seems to have it all she was the light welterweight female boxing champion of the world, She'd fought her way up from a far from idyllic childhood in a tough world where being part Native American wasn't in your favor.

When you're on top though, the only way is down, In one fateful night, Tanner's world gets turned upside down,

Vye Dodge leads a repressed, closeted life in the small California town of Los Rio,

For both Tanner and Vye, one woman, Solita, and her child, Lila, change everything both pulling them together and unwittingly keeping them apart.

EXCERPT:

Vye Dodge had paused momentarily beside the long row of colorfully expensive cans of coffee, when the woman rounded the corner of the grocery store aisle.
The woman was wearing a rather simple white sundress against which her skin was the color of coffee into which a generous amount of cream had been poured.
Her dark eyes were long, slightly almond shaped and her hair swept beyond her slight shoulders in a long shimmer of blueblack,
There was a certain exotic mystery in the eyes that met her own, which held Vye spellbound, She had certainly seen plenty of Mexican women in the town of Los Rio, but she had never seen anyone quite like this woman.
She was absolutely and perfectly beautiful, Vye thought, there wasn't a single flaw, Not one.
The artist in her yearned, She could almost feel the silky texture of the waist length, black hair, How she longed to have the nerve to go up and speak to her, If only she knew the right words,
The woman pushed the cart closer,
"Uh, excuse me," Vye said, The woman gave her a slight smile,
"I, uh, I'm an artist, Oh, not a professional artist, but you see, when I saw you, I, that is"
It was then she became aware of the other woman and the little girl who was holding her hand.
There was something that told her that they were all together,
The woman looked Native American, with dark eyes, a wide, angular face and a nose that looked as if it had broken at least once.
Strands of black hair fell casually onto her forehead and long, thick, black hair brushed the tops of her shoulders, There was something disturbingly familiar about her, Her dark eyes met Vye's and suddenly she knew who the woman was,
The woman looked at her with an interested gaze,
"II'm sorry. " Vye muttered.
She began walking quickly towards the checkout lanes, her cart halffilled, A confusion of feelings coursed through her, There were only three people in line at the express checkout but it was too many, Vye shoved the cart up against the magazine stand and abandoned it there, walking swiftly towards the automatic doors as if she were wearing blinders.

As a writer who sometimes writes lesfic, I'm always interested in how others shape their stories and characters.
Ms. Dunn has done a pretty decent job with Shadows and Scars, I was gifted with a free copy in exchange for an unbiased review and this is it,

Tanner Syntelle is a female pro boxer, She's also unabashedly gay, doesn't care, and seems to have an allure that other women flock to, She also manages to choose poorly in who she dates and sleeps with, and that costs her emotionally,

Vye Dodge is also gay, more closeted than Tanner, a nurse who is called into action to take care of a sick little girlthe daughter of Tanner's halfbrother, Roy, an incorregible drunk and allaround scumbag.
Tanner and Vye knew each other growing up, didn't like each other that much, but are brought together because of circumstances beyond their control.
Roy's wife, Soleta, an illegal immigrant, becomes the focal point for both Vye and Tanner's affection, Spoiler, there really isn't any, but both Vye and Tanner fantasize about doing the bed dance with her,

In the long run, Tanner and Vye find each other, but only after making a few mistakes and always with the wrong womanMarywho is less than desirable as a person, but altogether desirable as a bedmate for both women at different times.

I liked the novel well enough to round it up
Acquire SHADOWS And SCARS Edited By Helen Dunn Manuscript
to a fourstar rating, although in retrospect, it's a tad higher than that, let's say fourpointfive.
There are a few glitches in the narrativeit seemed a tad simplistic in some places and yet very moving in others, . . some typos here and there, . . and a couple of passages of info dumps could have been left out which would have made the novel tighter, but overall, it's a fastmoving, hardhitting account of the people we meet, the choices we make for better or worse, and the doors that open when opportunity knocks.
