Get The Confederate States Marine Corps: The Rebel Leathernecks Authored By Ralph W. Donnelly Contained In Copy

enjoyed this book more than I expected, I know a lot about the Confederate Army, but I knew nothing about the Confederate Marine Corps.
I assumed that the Confederacy had Marines since they had a navy, but I never thought about it.
It turns out that a LOT of the United States Marine Corps officers attempted to resign when the War Between the States started, but the Secretary if the Navy, Gideon Welles, refused to accept the resignations and then dismissed them from the Marines.
It actually threw a couple of them in prison and made the Confederate negotiate for their release.
To its credit, the Confederate Congress votes to give these officers pay that they should have received from the United States.

There is a section on the Marine Officers that gives information on each individual, and nothing is sugarcoated.
If he was court martialed for insubordination and/or being drunk on duty, it is included,

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in either the Marine Corps or the Confederacy.
It is an easy read and well worth the time, This history of the Confederate States Marine Corps reflect the coastal and maritime struggles of the Confederate States as a whole.
