thought of his long line of troopers as a blue, steelstudded whip, "
BOOK The Last Frontier, by Howard Fast
WHAT KIND, . . Novel
BE MORE SPECIFIC, . . Historical fiction, Western fiction, realism, social issues
ABOUT WHAT, . . The fateful, heroictrek of Dull Knifes starving band of Northern Cheyenne from the Indian Territory Oklahoma northward toward their ancestral homeland, while an entire country and its army demonized and pursued them.
SIGNIFICANCE Published in, when the world was paying too little attention to racial extermination in Europe, the book was a reminder of past genocides even in this land of “freedom”.
Themovie “Cheyenne Autumn” was inspired in part by Fasts book, but also by Mari Sandozs novel which gave its general plot and its title to the movie.
The movie was one of the first big films to portray Plains Indians in a sympathetic light,
SO SHOULD I READ IT OR WHAT, . . Yes, if you have any interest in the Old West, the pioneer days, and the tragic situation of the Indian tribes in the lates.
YOU GOT ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD, . . Howard Fast wrote some pretty impressive books, including among his several dozen novels, The Immigrants, Spartacus, and The Dinner Party, He was skilled at weaving history with fiction, and his writing style is more eloquent than many who write historical fiction,
Gripping account of the plight of the Cheyenne as they tried to escape the army to return their native homeland, Howard Fast who also wrote the novel Spartacus based thisaccount of theCheyenne attempt to escape the Indian Territory now Oklahoma for their ancestral home in the Black Hills on the scant historical record and his own handson research.
Told from the point of view of the weary soldiers and government officials whose duty it was to track down the Cheyenne and bring them back to the reservation, or kill them in the process, the book makes for simultaneously fascinating and horrifying reading.
The cruelty visited upon the original inhabitants of this land we all now call home is but one of the many examples of sins that underpin American democracy and freedom.
Fast has done a mostly decent job recounting the events with a melancholy anger for the evil never avenged,
The problem with Fast's book and why I did not rate it higher is that that author's prose is often not up to the challenge of the narrative.
His intentions are good, and I admire his ambitions, but the writing is uneven, and all too often excessively maudlin, There is another account of these events, written by Nebraska native Mari Sandoz, entitled Cheyenne Autumn which, together with Fast's book, was the source for John Ford'sfilm of the same name, which I look forward to reading soon.
Perhaps Ms. Sandoz writing from the perspective of the Cheyenne was able to avoid the cheap sentimentality that undoes some of Fast's story, We shall see. To be continued One of the last chapters in the extermination of the American native people, Simple narrative which is compelling, compassionate, and revolting, French version A true tale, a sad and yet victorious retelling of one of the final incidents of the near extermination of the Native Americans.
It is an uneasy feeling that we were so determined to wipe out a whole civilization, And yet it appears that consciously or unconsciously, the sacrifice of onehalf of the group, along with the wisdom, tenacity, and spirituality of the tribal chief, helped the remaining tribe escape death by "reservation.
" A book that I read when I was like, it made a huge impression on me back then, actually. On a surface level, Howard Fast did a graet job in making a thrilling wild west adventure novel, You can read it as such and enjoy it,
On a deeper level, knowing that the book is based on a true story, it's a tribute to those who resisted colonialism anywhere in the world and a necessary reminder of one of the many dark chapters in American history.
The book exposes how the horrible treatment of Native Americans was caused by the inherently capitalist drive to control resources in casu fertile land and buffalos.
Howard Fast shows how this system was oiled by racism, Throughout the book colonialists repeatedly make the mistake to see natives as irrational children or evilspirited savages, On the one hand these stereotypes get them to underestimate the natives' military tactics, while on the other hand it helps colonialists to justify the cruel treatment of these peoples.
Racism reveals itself as a welcome and even necessary instrument to dehumanise the victims,
The author makes the reader understand these dynamics in a subtle way, Most importantly by not making use himself of exotic stereotyping of Native Americans to spice up the story as most other authors in this genre do.
He portrays them as surprise human beings with human desires and needs, The Cheyenne tribe in the book is strengthened by their profound comprehension of nature and their collectivist way of living,
This book is a blast, Really enjoyed reading the book, The last couple of chapters however, were hard , only because of what the native Americans went through, Hard to read , with your eyes filling up with tears,
Qu'il est triste, ce livre, . .
"They killed without thought, without choice, without compassion, sending their bullets into the hearts of fiveyearolds and tenyearolds and ancients who had seen eighty long years flow past," Fast,.
This book is a tragic and asclosetotrueaspossible retelling of the Cheyenne's journey to the north after they were forced off of their homelands by the United States, and into the desolate, harsh, and disease ridden reservations of Oklahoma.
Throughout the entire journey, they were followed by heavily armed US troops, miraculously able to avoid them,
While this tells an incredibly important, often forgotten
story, and stresses the true extent of America's crimes against indigenous people, it focuses too heavily on the troops and military aspect of the story.
This book shines brightest when it describes the native people, but becomes dull and uninteresting when following the troops, Fast clearly had an excellent grasp on human rights and race for his time, but the novel fails to humanize the Cheyenne to a proper extent that you might expect from a modern novel.
