book is amazing, I love the characters and the plot, I came wait to see what comes next for Kate, After loving the first book so much, I admit I had a twinge of nervousness when I picked up this book.
Would it be as good as the first book in this series was
When all is said and done, though, while I think I preferred the first book to this one just because the first time with any set of characters is always going to be unique, this book was a solid sequel that did a lot to deepen the various charactersspecifically Kate and Ty's relationship.
In my review for the last book, I raved about the complexity of Kate's mom, but this time Ty stole the show for being a really fascinating yet complex character.
Vandel captured the psychology of that type of person perfectly, While I most enjoyed watching him interact with Kate, his interactions with Hassan and the character arc that forced on Kate was also really fun to watch.
Some story elements seemed to be sacrificed for Ty to become a more central character, Jackson didn't get as much screen time as I hoped for, and the plot also seemed sparser than it was in the last one, which had already been a sparse plot.
On the plus side, though, this sharper focus on Kate, Ty, and Hassan also created more thematic relevance in this book as Kate's idealism and Hassan's gritty realism were further brought into conflict.
I don't feel like I have a clear idea yet on where this theme is heading and how it's going to turn out, but it's building toward something, and I like that.
At the end of the day, this is kind of a sliceoflife novel masquerading as speculative fiction, You can certainly read it for the superhero aspects, but what captured me the first book and what continues to capture me here is just how real and compelling all the characters are.
The story is very characterdriven and all the plot elements are merely a way of accentuating the conflicts between the different characters involved.
At some points, it makes certain plot points a bit underwhelming, But the characterfocus is also what saves this series from being a series of generic superhero plots, which we kind of have enough of right now in current literary and movie trends.
Overall, probably my favorite modern sliceoflifetype series I've read so far, The next book can't come out soon enough,
Rating:.Stars Very Good. Like the first book in the series, “Into the Fire,” the author captured my imagination with well developed characters, tense situations, and more than a few surprises.
If youre a Seattle native or fan, youll also love the local sceneryincluding some less known places,
She paints believable characters that make me want to hang out with them and get to know them, or in some cases, smack them silly.
The novel is billed as being for Young Adults but I think its appropriate and interesting for YA and up.
Although this book can be read on its own Id start with “Into the Fire, ”
Read it, and youll be a fan of Kim Vandels writing, her characters, and this fascinating series, I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment in the Under Fire series! Without spoilers, we get to see a lot of character development from everyone involved.
I loved seeing a bit more of everyone's motivation, This book picks up right after Into the Fire, which I really love in a series, I don't want to miss any of the action! I'd classify this as Christian scifi/hero, but I know the technical term is speculative fiction, if you need to know the genre! Good vs evil, wrong vs right, who will win I love this book, and I am particularly hard to please.
This book begins a moment after Bookends, so if you have both, it's really great, Vandel has a complete story arc, so you feel satisfied, That said, I can hardly wait for Book, It's been awhile since I read this, I had forgotten to review it, I enjoyed this as much as book one, and am still waiting for the next book! Just phenomenal! Kim's characters are so realistic I wish I could meet them in person and have them tell me this story face to face loved this second book and the answers we get to figuring out more about Kate's Gift.
Excellent suspense that kept me reading into the late night hours, The muchawaited sophomore novel by Kim Vandel did not disappoint, It was so much fun to see Kate uncover the power of her gift and use it to defend against the attacks from the Fallen Guardians.
Meanwhile, her broken family relationships are getting worse, not better, Just like in the real world, Kate's relationships are not healed by one prayer, one conversation, or one sermon, She has to continually build into the lives of those that should be the first to support her, but aren't.
Like many with a dysfunctional family, Kate looks outside and finds acceptance and support within the Guardians, They help fight the external and internal enemies of this growingstrongerbytheday heroine,
Anxiously awaiting the next adventure, . . so addicted to Kim Vandel's writing! Kate is beginning to better understand her role as a Guardian, although she is still unsure of herself.
And now Ty is a Guardian! Her brother who is not even "on speaking terms with God" as she puts it is proving to be a better Guardian than she is.
At least that's how Kate sees it, A small spoiler perhaps: I love how Ty points out that she is the "teacher's pet, " But is she willing to face that and everything it means
I loved the role that Ty played in this book and the inner and outer struggles he faced.
Thisnd book of the series, I felt was more about Ty's character changing and growing although Kate was very much a part of that.
The clashes between brother and sister took place at some of the worst and moist dangerous times,
I am now wondering what dangers Kate faces in the next book, Eden may seem weaker, but I have a feeling she will be after Kate with a vengeance, I also wonder what we are going to learn about Hassan, his investments that generate vast wealth and we are still clueless about, and why he keeps his last name a secret.
Such an exciting series! Both books leave you desiring more! Among the Flames is just as engaging as the first installment, with the added bonus of growing more invested in the characters I fell in love with before.
Everything I enjoyed about the first book in the Under Fire series applies to Among the Flames as well, but I really loved the focus on Kate and her brother Ty in this book.
Seeing how that relationship would change was one of the things I'd been most curious to read after the conclusion of book one, so I found that particular arc incredibly satisfying.
I can't wait for my next opportunity to follow Kate and the rest of the Guardians on their adventures! Extremely well writtenespecially the characters! I found this book through KM Weiland who wrote an entire article on the merit's of Vandel's writing.
And it did not disappoint! The second installment of this series suffers from no sophomore jinx, If anything, author Kim Vandel hits her stride and outpaces the field, The plot thickens as Kate's brother Ty is called as the most unlikely Guardian she can imagine, She now has to juggle that wildcard along with the Guardians continuing search for Eden who left her for dead.
Oh and also keep up with her schoolwork so her mother does not suspect anything is out of the ordinary in her life.
Whew! All of this is juggled by the author so successfully that my only complaint is, . . that the book is too short, Please, Ma'am, may we have some more Kim Vandel has rocketed onto the elite list of my favorite authors, She has a solid style, a masterful control of character and subtext, a way of making even mundane details interesting, and a great slant on supernatural YA.
My only true complaint about this second installment in the series is that its TOO SHORT, I could happily have handled five hundred more pages of Kate and company, As it is, I must suffer heroically through another year of waiting for the sequel,
At its heart, this is a romanceand yet, theres no romance in either this book or the previous one.
And thats half the charm, Vandel is doing what so few authors have the patience or the guts to do in creating a longlasting, evolving relationship that relies on characterization rather than gratuitously rushed romance.
Cant wait for the sequel!
Kates supernatural Gift allowed her to survive when Eden left her for dead.
The only problem is that Kate has no idea what her Gift is or how it works, She needs to figure it out soon because if Edens latest plan succeeds, the Guardians and everyone they care about will become prey.
The threat hits Kate hard now that her brother, Ty, has been chosen as a Guardian, The brokenness shes tried so hard to ignore spills over into her Guardian life, and Ty seems determined to drive the pain deeper.
Tension between them complicates the search for Eden, And what if her troubled sibling decides hed rather join the enemy
The more Kate learns about her Gift, the more she suspects shes a danger to the other Guardiansincluding Hassan, whos taken on the role of her defender even as he pushes her to embrace her full potential as a Guardian.
Time is running out, and Hassan believes shes the key to stopping Eden, Kate will have to find a way to make peace with both her brother and her Gift before its too late.
Kim Vandel is an award winning author, a science nerd, and a recovering overachiever, She lives in the Seattle area, where shes learned to substitute caffeine for Vitamin D, When not writing, she spends her time reading or binge watching Netflix while she waits for the next superhero movie to release.
