Obtain Immediately Writing Military Science Fiction: Infantry Formulated By William S. Frisbee Jr. Ready In Booklet
resource book
I really enjoyed this book, Much of it I knew fromyears in the army but much I didnt because I wasnt combat arms, So, any writer can gain much from this book, I hope the author writes more military resource sci fi books, maybe naval ops, A Musthave desk reference for authors of military genres, Definitive, authoritative, comprehensive.
The broad yet detailed coverage will help writers of any genre including a setting or character with a military background, write like you know what you're talking about,
Based on his honorable Marine Corps career and years of exhaustive research, Frisbee has given us the first of his excellent series to help us write with greater accuracy, our own works touching on the military world.
disclosure: I have purchased an ebook version, but was given an ARC for the purposes of review, Whooo, finally finished this book, It took me a while not because it was bad or inherently uninteresting, I was quite interested in the subjects the book was talking about but it does read a loooot like a textbook.
Made me feel like I was studying for a UNI course or something and that is not fun,
Not dragging the book, that is what is it but it did take me a while because of that, stories are easier to consume because they motivate you to go on, if you're planning to read this from front to back be prepared for that but in all honesty you probably should just use it as a reference manual.
Like just use the appendix to look up the relevant information when you need it,
I really wanted to read it from front to back because it didn't feel right leaving a review without doing that, however I ended up needing to skim over certain parts I felt like were.
. . irrelevant to what I was writing, I already knew/was familiar with for one reason or another or felt like I'd come back to later when the time was appropriate.
I am glad I skimmed through it because I'm keeping the book on my desk as a reference manual to use and it'll be easier to find what I need now that I've skimmed through it all.
So, that being said it was a heavy and sluggish read but a very informative and useful one, I know a lot more now than I did before and what I've read is honestly going to come in handy a lot.
I have small tiny bit of criticism: I took a star off because I feel like the book wasn't edited professionally, I feel like a professional editor would have made the information more consumable and also there was a LOT of repeated information that felt redundant.
Which might work better if you treat this as a reference manual instead of trying to read it front to back like I did or you can just skim over the parts where he repeats the same info again which I also did.
Also what the hell is up with he size of the book It's so big! I find it weird how damn big the book is but I don't know that isn't really a bad thing I guess, just weird.
Nevertheless, I am really happy with my purchase and the sheer magnitude of information was staggering, Would have given it four and a half if Goodreads had of allowed me, Five
Im still drowning in information from this book! All in all, its a very good guide to structuring military scifi to make it more true to life.
This book is very much like an encyclopedia with the amount of relevant information within its pages, It covers military strategy, troop tactics, warfare, weapons, and even the mindset of a soldier, Id recommend it to any author who writes science fiction, or straight military fiction in general, This book goes beyond its title and will appeal to all who are interested in military science fiction, I've done my military and it's precise and very detailled, The author both explains how infantry works now and how it should work in the future,
For all writers, it's well structured and you'll find yourself tagging a lot of chapter for future reuse, Such a wealth of information ! I can't wait for the two sequels! I'm a military science fiction author, but this book isn't for me,
This book has a lot of detail, I couldn't get through most of it, But there's nothing wrong with a lot of detail, As I learn more about myself as a writer, I learned I prefer reading small pieces of information as needed, or looking up what I need to know when I need it and not reading it before.
This book isn't for me because I'm not the type of author that likes to read technical information in one sitting, but if you like to absorb a lot of information as fast as you can, then this book is for you.
Again, I don't have anything against the author, He did a good job compiling a lot of technical information in this book from his personal experiences, He wrote about the different types of warfare, like guerilla warfare, war by attrition, and so on,
However, I would have liked a little more editing, In one sentence, he wrote "Some examples would be in Afghanistan how the insurgents flee to Pakistan for and are supported by other nations who send money, weapons and fighters.
" Some sentences were a little wordy and could be shortened to only mention the key points without unnecessary repetition, Some sentences seemed to include some filler content or the author's thoughts,
This isn't a book on how to write military science fiction, It doesn't tell you how to have good pacing, believable characters, etc, It's more of a technical manual or guide, A better title for this book would have been "Military Science Fiction: Infantry Guidebook" or something like that,
As an author, my personal preference is to study the craft of writing itself, I'm not giving this a bad review just because this book didn't fit my preference, I took a star off because the book needs more polishing, Some of it is straight from the author's blog, A Resource, a reference manual, a guide book,
A crucial reference for writers of military science fiction and a priceless resource for other writers, What goes on during a firefight What does a Staff Sergeant do A Corporal A Lieutenant A Captain How big is a company How far can troops march in a day What are the mechanics of an orbital assault drop Why arent all soldiers equipped with machine guns How many Marines are in a squad and what are their jobs What is the French Foreign Legion equivalent of a sergeant What does adrenaline do to a human body This book also covers things like types of armor, weapons, biotechnology, cybernetics, psionics and so much more.
Overpages of crucial knowledge and numerous links to more detailed information, With some information from www, MilSF. com it contains a very significant amount of new information and updated sections,
