illustrated all about fish, illustrator Britta Teckentrup uses beautiful digital illustrations in this engaging informational text focused on fish, No only does she explain the characteristics of a fish as well as highlighting various types of habitat where fish may be found and describing the ocean food chain.
The use of bright colors, simple but engaging text and cleverlywritten headings for the various pages make this a guaranteed hit for young readers, My favorite section has to be "Staying Alive," which features the various ways fish manage to elude their predators, including puffing up, emitting chemicals, and confusing them with double eye patterns.
Sometimes some fish are simply good at hiding or camouflaging themselves, Others seek protection through schooling or moving together with many other fish, The book would not be complete without a reminder that the abundance of some fish species has been threatened by overfishing and net trawling as well as the use of plastics that are discarded into the water.
Science teachers would do well to add this title to their classroom collection, safe in the knowledge that it will fascinate their students, Even the cover and end papers are visually appealing, Excellent introduction for young readers, or to read to younger children, This book was full of information about evolution, It felt over the top for a kids book, So pretty. Plus full of information! Very enjoyable, I learned quite a bit, This Londonbased creator is a fineartist, illustrator, author, and remarkably effective science educator, The shimmery, embossed and texturized cover invites readers of any age to begin with a leisurely and curious examination of these schooled fish, Each shape, size and color suggests the remarkable diversity among the vertebrate fish pictured, Even at a glance, their individual eyes reveal the fact that fish have brains, complex nervous systems, and pursue individual purposes, even when schooled, This cover is an ideal invitation to meet these fish you will want to know more about,
Teckentrup provides a brilliant introduction to fish on our planet, launching the book with a double spread challenge to find images that are NOT fish from among the clearly labeled images.
Successive spreads offer STEM content at its best, with intriguing and labeled science diagrams of a "bony" fish and a "cartilaginous" fish, There is no shying away from accuracy in language and content, yet the images and main text make the science content understandable for even youngest readers, at least in conversation with adults.

The pageturns progress from early evolutionary fish history through varied habitats, always including sidebar illustrations and brief text with information and/or questions, Various pages also feature "Can you find it" insets, food chain patterns, oddities of various species, survival strategies and adaptations, and reproduction patterns,

In the concluding spreads the role of PEOPLE in relation to FISH is explored briefly, but effectively, revealing disruptions to nature's millions of years of FISH development, along with examples of kidfriendly changes in daily behaviors and choices that can have significant positive effects on FISH!
Utterly gorgeous! An absolutely gorgeous book about fish.
Warrants poring over each page and studying the wonderful computergenerated illustrations, With digital illustrations that your students will want to "pour over" or look at closely or look at again and again, Teckentrup engages readers in an interesting conversation about "fish everywhere.
" The layout and design are studentfriendly, Each twopage layout addresses a subtopic starting with "It's a Fish! So What is That, Subtopics include descriptions of fish in different habitats e, g. , freshwater, deep blue sea, coral reef and also how fish function or survive e, g. , feeding, staying alive, schooling, etc, . Each subtopic has a clear title followed by a short paragraph and then short descriptions of a wide variety of fish, etc are tightly woven into the design of the one to twopage layout.
These descriptions are also tightly focused on the subtopic, Some pages include a graphic e, g. , of the "ocean food chain" that is very easy for young readers to followthe graphic, the flow of the graphic, the labels and so forth are smartly done.

AND there's just some really interesting contentthis is not just another fish book! Did you know that fish do not have tastebuds on their tongues "They can be on their faces or all over their bodies.
Catfish have up to,taste buds humans have around,, " Cool, huh Students will be pleasantly surprised at the interesting facts they come across,

I'd READ THIS ALOUD in thestth grade classroom not in one sitting and maybe not a whole page of info, Maybe read aloud a set of the subtopics, choosing a few of the descriptive facts on each page to read aloud, This may also be enough to entice students to pick this book up from the classroom library to read independently or with a partner, Otherwise, I'd BOOK TALK this and leave for students to snatch up, Read aloud the description of fish tastebuds see "Feeding" and "Weird and Wonderful Feeders" using a "Did you know" kind of approach to entice curious students.

I think a lot of times students don't always monitor for what they are learning when they read books like this, They "look over" the pages versus really reading and thinking carefully about what's new information and what information do they already know or how they are adding to their learning by noticing unfamiliar facts in the book.
To nudge students to really immerse themselves in learning from their book, I think you might pose clear purposes for reading and responding with questions like, "What is new information" and "What are you learning that would be fun to talk with a friend about"

This would be a fabulous MENTOR TEXT for WRITING WORKSHOP.
Post one of the twopage layouts and ask the students, "What do you notice about how the illustrator/author has designed this page" and "How could you use this to help you think about designing/writing about a topic or subtopic"

Looking forward to exploring other

Pretty. Almost a tactile experience. Graži knyga : The illustrations are what set this book apart, though the factual information is intelligently arranged and not overwhelming, I only read bits of this to Berry as it was a bit over her head in its entirety, We'll definitely be taking another look at this one in the future, NEREALI First published in the United Kingdom inand in the US in

Teckentrup is one of many new illustrators that I love, but this nonfiction title has flaws one in the final format, It is not necessarily Techentrups illustrations, but the physical production of this title, It is difficult to read the very small print on dark hues even bright colors, Given this limitation, as an adult I soon tired of attempting to read or look at this title, I did manage to learn how the bladder of the fish works and that many of a catfishs taste buds are located on its long whiskers.
This is a beautiful book, the illustrations are beautiful, really colourful with a rich variety of patterns and textures, A factual book with small chunks of informative and interesting text covering different elements of ocean life, feeding, parenting, types of fish, how their bodies work etc.
I would highly recommend this for young children with a fascination with the natural world, You get a lot of bang for your buck with this one, Toddlergradeschool would enjoy this book, Theres bright colorful images.
